Vote for your best anime of 2016

As I’ve done for the past few years, I’m opening a poll for my readers (what’s left of you at least, although hopefully everyone is streaming back with all this hot content I’ve been posting lately) to vote on their favourite anime of the year.

Same rules apply as ever. It must be an anime series that ended in 2016, so no March Comes in Like a Lion, Twin Star Exorcists or Gundam the Origin. Similarly no split cours anime with sequels announced as soon as the previous season ended, which crosses off Drifters and Berserk. Everything else is cool, which includes long running franchises that ended this year like Fairy Tail. Vote after the jump.

  3. top 10 list soon!

Voted Rakugo for the story, Mob Psycho for the visuals, and Haikyuu because it’s so much damn fun.

    “Bungole Stray Dogs”

Are you literally me? Voted the exact same three for the exact same reasons (though Mob Psycho had the advantage of being as much if not even more fun than HQ!! for me).

Choosing between HQ!! and JoJo was hard as hell, though.

    1. Durarara!!

Sometimes it can be hard to pick your favourite anime of the year, but this year it was easy. I miss Durarara!! way more than any other anime that came out this year. The ending was a little disappointing because they should have punished Izaya more. They didn’t have to kill him, but do something really violent or brutal so that he learns his lesson not to play with other people like they are chess pieces. So many great characters that I will miss forever. Izaya included. I loved to hate him.

    2. Yuri on Ice

I’m so fucking happy that people enjoy and love this anime so much. There are still some people who dropped and hated it because it has yaoi in it. FUCK those people. You can still stay straight and bang women and love this series. This is also the only sports anime I have ever finished. I hate sports and everything that has something to do with sports, but like always I give every single anime a fair chance before dropping it. This was awesome anime. People also complained about bad animation. Animation is there to help tell the story. Animation is never the most important thing. If it looks little sloppy it doesn’t matter as long as the story and characters are good.

There is just one problem. Everybody is talking about the wedding. Gay marriage is not allowed in Japan or in Russia. So they can’t get married, right? Am I just being a total fucking idiot, missing something obvious or did nobody else check wikipedia and read about gay marriage? Can two same sex foreigners marry each other in America if their own country doesn’t allow gay marriage? I don’t think that they can.

    3. Amaama to Inazuma

I love Usagi Drop and Barakamon so of course I love this anime too. This post is already way too long so that’s all I’m going to say about it.

About Yuri!!! on Ice, Kubo said on twitter that the anime wasn’t meant to represent real life: basically in the world of YoI no one will discriminate you for being who you are or loving who you love. A bit too idealistic for my liking, but I can get behind that reasoning and appreciate the idea of wanting to deliver a feel-good and endearing story that won’t be bogged down by RL issues.

The current top 4 are all in my top 5 for this year, mixed around and with the addition of Haikyuu: Mob Psycho 100, Yuri on Ice, Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, Diamond is Unbreakable, Haikyuu

Fortunately I haven’t watched many anime from this year, so the vote for Sakamoto, Galko-chan and Luluco was easy. The poll also reminded me that the really best anime from this year, Sengoku Choujuu Giga, Aggressive Retsuko and Goma-chan, are still running, so thank you for making me feel better!

One of the best things I saw this year was the first OVA of The Ancient Magus Bride. I wish they would make a regular series about it.

As is my tradition with these posts, I was aiming for the bottom 3. It was a hard choice between Rewrite and World Trigger, but I eventually went with the former.
Gate, Joker Game and Rewrite for me.

The crown goes to Rakugo this year. Jojo anime missed something that made the manga an addictive read. And Haikyuu consistently fun after 2 seasons.

How is Keijo not near the top? It’s the best anime to come out in years!!!

Maybe voters didn’t recognize it because they didn’t see eight exclamation marks after the name!!!!!!!!

I honeslty thought that Orange and Osomatsu-san were going to rank higher, they weren’t among my favourites, but I believed those 2 shows had a big fanbase.

In the case of Orange, I believe its production issues may have hurt it a lot, even if the manga had sizable pre-existing fanbase prior to its adaptation into an anime. As for Osomatsu, its TV series counts as a 2015 title afaik. The only things Osomatsu-related that began and finished airing in 2016 (aside from the second cour) are specials and ONAs, so it makes sense people would vote for something else.

By the rules of thecartdriver’s poll, Osomatsu-san is technically a 2016 anime, since it ended in the winter season of 2016.

I know, but that doesn’t mean people will be more inclined to vote for it if subconsciouly or not, they still percieve it as a “2015 anime”.

I kind of got sidetracked this year and did not watch some series that would likely have been favorites. I thus had to vote as follows:

Jojo’s, which I am certain would be in my top three even if I had watched every other anime this year, for its amazing visuals, fun story, awesome characters and nasty, detestable villain

Grimgar whose washed-out, water-colory visuals I very much enjoyed and for being the virtual world anime that showed us the leveling up process

Kabaneri, despite its lame ass villain, for sating even just a little bit my hunger for Attack on Titan 2

Had to happen… But I am still sad to see Re:Zero in the top ten. I watched it to the end, but I don’t know how. I enjoyed a few episodes, but a progressively increasing sense of annoyance was born in me on the MC’s first fit of tears and would occasionally explode to the surface at bullshit like the annoying cult leader guy.

MP100 and Luluco are easy choice for me but I had hard time deciding the third one. Rakugo, Haikyuu S2, and Durarara S2 are all great but in the end I choose Durarara.

JOJO’s and My Hero Academia were easy choices, would’ve picked Drifters 3rd if it was eligible. Ended up going with Durarara instead, which I’d completely forgot about and thought was disappointing, but was still Durarara.

Only finished 10 shows this year, so little caught my interest.

You should definitely check out the shows that are in the top 20 that you haven’t already watched; only one out of those that I thought was truly disappointing was ERASED, and even then it started off really strong and only began to falter in its second half.

The top 3 is truly the cream of the crop.
