Terribad Anime Website Review: Sankaku Complex

YouTube Preview Image

I did censor any boobage, but the video is still very much NSFW. I strongly recommend not trying to keep up with the text the first time around. Go back if you doubt that Sankaku would write something to that effect.

I’ve spent way too much time on Sankaku for this video. My brain was starting to melt and my standards for decency have disappeared altogether. Yet I still didn’t find that article that claimed the Tokyo Youth Ordinance Bill would be “the end of late night TV anime”, a piece of hyperbole if there ever was one. Which is a shame because the one that claimed Evangelion would be banned isn’t quite as stupidly over the top, and actually has a small element of truth to it, even if it is totally blown out of proportion anyway.

Interestingly enough the note on K-On actually having a large female following is true. It was based on a survey done during the airing of the second season, and while it still showed that 60% of K-On were your stereotypical creepy otaku, the other 40% were very normal girls and women in the 14–24 year age bracket. The latter number are more likely than not to actually follow the manga its based on in Kirara though, while the former are isolated to the anime done by KyoAni.

    Interesting to think about eh?

I don’t like your implication that all 60% are confirmed to be “creepy” otaku just because they are male.

If WOMEN can innocently view K-on, so can at least some of the men.

Yep, Sankaku, for all your anime porn needs. Great site. That, and Gelbooru.
Also, did you just call those exhibitionist women “voyeurs” ? I.e. the opposite of what they are ?

I’ve been hearing a lot about good old Sankaku Complex since a while back, but I’ve never had the misfortune to actually assess its content with my own eyes.

Yep. It’s the true cesspool of anime fandom.

Know of any other less biased, less porn oriented websites that pertains to anime/japanese/“made in china” related news? (serious question)
The made in china posts crack me up sometimes. Or disgust me. trash-bag seaweed disgust.

Crunchyroll has a surprisingly good anime/otaku news feed and the MyAnimeList one is pretty useful too. ANN is probably still your best bet though, partly for their phenomenal database and partly because their size means they can bag some really interesting people to interview. They certainly have their problems, but they’re definitely the most reliable

Unfortunately its functionality leaves much to be desired. Anidb database is superior in every way. Plus tags.

For news, I second the mention of ANN. They tend to be quite complete regarding news, and it’s rare for something anime-related not to be mentioned on that website. For reviews, however, I’d definitely skip ANN in favor of AniDB, as you have both recommendations (for a quick overview) and reviews for most anime. I tend to trust “normal” users (ie. you and me) for reviews, rather than reviews posted on sites with plenty of sponsors.

Did you actually read that? It’s pathetic, they attack the authors looks. Out of all the things you could mock Sankaku for, they pick the authors appearance?

Or his retarded grandiose delusions and sucking up to DC? Artefact’s hobo looks and antics are a perfect indicator of Sankaku’s level of journalistic quality anyway.

Complaining about Sankaku is futile anyway. ANN is the Fox News, and Sankaku is the sensationalist tabloid press. Complaints only make you look either extremely bored or plain jealous. People have a taste for pandering, misguiding bullshit, and they just provide.

Did you just use a ‘criticism is pointless’ argument?

      • Posted January 22, 2012 at 10:15 pm | Permalink

No, I used a ‘this is akin to writing a critical review on Compiled Naruto Fillers or Paris Hilton’ argument.

Or, well, I guess I did. Unlike what the plebeian hordes at e.g. Sankaku would tell you, there are things that are not worth giving a crap about. The opposite of love isn’t hate you know, it’s indifference.

I for one appreciate Sankaku as yet another shit filter that keeps the said plebes away from the depths us bloggers inhabit. Sankaku specifically panders to the wannabe-2channers with retarded racist right wing ideologies, and trumpets pretty much whatever they want to hear. I’m glad the said demographic has its own disgusting lair where to club each other in.

I still think there’s worth in criticising it. You’re obviously not aiming at the already indoctrined, but at those who visit occasionally (of which there are plenty). Those are the opinions you can swing with such a piece. Either that, or putting into words what others find distasteful about the site but can’t put their fingers on it.

Not that I expect to be making waves with this or anything. It’s mainly criticism for entertainment’s sake

There’s that yes, but I don’t know many people who wouldn’t happily think about their favorite stuff. So that doesn’t really count.
My point is I didn’t get anything out of your video other than a rant on a site that anyone with at least half a brain would dismiss as worthless crap.

  11. Posted January 22, 2012 at 8:08 pm | Permalink

I completely agree with you in all your points. Sankaku Complex is a great site to visit, especially when you want to tune into the latest news about anime porn. Sometimes I just sit at home and can’t find any anime porn or news about anime porn and I feel sad because you know the feeling when you’re just sitting at home and can’t find any anime porn or news about anime porn? Yeah, I get that feeling too when I just sit at home and can’t find any anime porn or news about anime porn. And then I go to Sankaku Complex and then I am happy because Sankaku Complex has anime porn and news about anime porn.

P.S. I don’t think you should have censored the anime porn on your video. Some people visit your site to see anime porn and news about anime porn. It is really unfair when you do not let them see anime porn or news about anime porn on a video that is about anime porn and news about anime porn.

Artefact is actually a pretty clever writer. Most of the ridiculous stuff he says is actually satire or otherwise tongue-in-cheek. You really have to get used to his nuances to understand his work.

You should probably just take a deep breath, ask artefact for an interview and come back with a better review.

Maybe you’re just not at his level of writing. He actually has nuances instead of being 100% “ugh too much loli, boobs ugh, no substance gaize”. Yeah, enough said.

Yes his declaration that schoolgirls are getting away scott free with prostitution and that punishing them under the law too would solve their problems because they’re all greedy and with loose morals is most definitely tongue in cheek. If it’s satire then he’s pretty damn coy about it

      • Anca
        Posted January 23, 2012 at 12:28 am | Permalink

Prostitution is still illegal in Japan, and whether you agree with that or not doesn’t change the fact that there’s something wrong with underage girls selling themselves of their own free will and ADDITIONALLY ( the first bit ought to be enough already) that the blame for it falls onto the ‘customers’ who, while certainly engaging in illegal activities and not innocent, aren’t actually harming anyone in having consensual sex. Can the girls consent? If they can make a business model off selling their panties then they certainly have enough mental faculties to consent, imho.

And the posts regarding japanese schoolgirl prostitution are quite separate from the ones talking about actual rape.

Meh, I only frequent that site to see what anime to avoid in a given season and because the china posts — most of them — are funny, so what do I know anyway.

There’s certainly a problem, but there are two issues with how it’s presented. One is the assertation that the men are the victims here, as if they can’t helpt themselves for buying prostitutes or something. Secondly, that punishing the girls under the law is the ideal method.

DID YOU SERIOUSLY JUST TRY TO JUSTIFY STATUTORY RAPE?

        wow, just wow.

      • Anca
        Posted January 24, 2012 at 2:41 am | Permalink

While I certainly don’t agree with statutory rape, not in the ~16 teenager region where most of this school girl prostitution thing happens, that post was hardly an attempt to justify it. Read it again.

Meh, my opinion is that prostitution should be legalized and the age of consent lowered to 16, or even hell 15, then this whole thing would fall out of the scope of the law entirely.

The presentation is indeed tasteless and inappropriate, although being a tasteless rag is the entire selling point of the site. As or the men… yes, they should indeed know to seek older prostitutes because dude, wtf, there’s stupid and there’s really stupid. I was just saying that the act itself, being illegal aside, wasn’t actually causing harm (assuming the girls knew what they were doing and weren’t pressured into it, in which case it stops being ‘statutory’).

And none of this applies to the accounts of actual rape, as I said.

Hahahahahaha. I’d say its just as equal as ANN though. Sankaku’s in the trashiest part of the anime internet society while ANN (especially those goddamn forums) is too far high up thinking anyone who actually watches anime for free are criminals who’s stealing money from the industry while they themselves do it too.

So its dumbass, shameless otakus VS high society otaku hypocrites. I’d choose neither but ANN is good for news only so for the site itself, ANN wins hands down.

I would have assumed that any review of Sankaku Complex would have to devote at least 40% of the time to Aya Hirano.

You just put in two or three Hirano stories right near the end. That doesn’t communicate the true Hirano-centrism of SanCon!

Sup, I’m a regular from Sankaku Complex and honestly I love reading all your comments about it. For those who don’t already know, I’ll help clear up some misconceptions. First off, the members are well aware of how awful the articles are. The “regulars” usually don’t even read them. Secondly, permabans for hating the site are nonexistant nowadays, Artefact doesn’t even interact with members anymore. The last two remaining overseers for the forums are pretty chill. Third, I can’t deny that the porn is the biggest attraction there, though there are a select few in the forums who visit daily for the community. Lastly, the majority of the 4chan-like commenters are anons from the articles section. The articles comment section and the forums are treated as two entirely separate communities (though both are pretty crude and full of trolls the forum is generally nicer to be in).

        @T:

I think many people who act obnoxious on the Internet are actually making a passive-aggressive statement.

They wallow in “Foul Bachelor Frog” pride because someone calls them stinky.

They write elaborate blog posts about how much they hate group X, because at some point ten years ago, they felt that someone from group X hated them.

I won’t link to the blog, but I keep having personality clashes with a guy who hates anime in general because he thinks it makes otaku into swinging, promiscuous bisexuals. When pressed about why he thinks it happens, he explains that he used to date the pretty girl from an anime club and he felt all her friends hated him.

So, bingo, project the guilt about having sex, and say that otaku should feel guilty for having too much sex!

Sankaku trolls are the same way. They’re 16-year-old boys who make clumsy attempts to hit on 14-year-old girls, and get yelled at, so they make a big deal about how they are so lolicon. They’re a lot less perverse than they pretend to be. They just make a big noise about being perverts because the few people close to them accuse them of being perverts. They make a lot of “make me a sandwich” jokes because their teachers accuse them of not being feminist enough. They make a lot of racist jokes because they feel suffocated by political correctness.
