I’ve spent way too much time on Sankaku for this video. My brain was starting to melt and my standards for decency have disappeared altogether. Yet I still didn’t find that article that claimed the Tokyo Youth Ordinance Bill would be “the end of late night TV anime”, a piece of hyperbole if there ever was one. Which is a shame because the one that claimed Evangelion would be banned isn’t quite as stupidly over the top, and actually has a small element of truth to it, even if it is totally blown out of proportion anyway.

Interestingly enough the note on K-On actually having a large female following is true. It was based on a survey done during the airing of the second season, and while it still showed that 60% of K-On were your stereotypical creepy otaku, the other 40% were very normal girls and women in the 14–24 year age bracket. The latter number are more likely than not to actually follow the manga its based on in Kirara though, while the former are isolated to the anime done by KyoAni.

Crunchyroll has a surprisingly good anime/otaku news feed and the MyAnimeList one is pretty useful too. ANN is probably still your best bet though, partly for their phenomenal database and partly because their size means they can bag some really interesting people to interview. They certainly have their problems, but they’re definitely the most reliable
Unfortunately its functionality leaves much to be desired. Anidb database is superior in every way. Plus tags.
For news, I second the mention of ANN. They tend to be quite complete regarding news, and it’s rare for something anime-related not to be mentioned on that website. For reviews, however, I’d definitely skip ANN in favor of AniDB, as you have both recommendations (for a quick overview) and reviews for most anime. I tend to trust “normal” users (ie. you and me) for reviews, rather than reviews posted on sites with plenty of sponsors.

I’ve never really liked AniDB. Can’t work my way around their layout. MAL is probably the best at that, but can be unreliable, so I prefer ANN for when I really want to know shit

Artefact is actually a pretty clever writer. Most of the ridiculous stuff he says is actually satire or otherwise tongue-in-cheek. You really have to get used to his nuances to understand his work.

Prostitution is still illegal in Japan, and whether you agree with that or not doesn’t change the fact that there’s something wrong with underage girls selling themselves of their own free will and ADDITIONALLY ( the first bit ought to be enough already) that the blame for it falls onto the ‘customers’ who, while certainly engaging in illegal activities and not innocent, aren’t actually harming anyone in having consensual sex. Can the girls consent? If they can make a business model off selling their panties then they certainly have enough mental faculties to consent, imho.

Sup, I’m a regular from Sankaku Complex and honestly I love reading all your comments about it. For those who don’t already know, I’ll help clear up some misconceptions. First off, the members are well aware of how awful the articles are. The “regulars” usually don’t even read them. Secondly, permabans for hating the site are nonexistant nowadays, Artefact doesn’t even interact with members anymore. The last two remaining overseers for the forums are pretty chill. Third, I can’t deny that the porn is the biggest attraction there, though there are a select few in the forums who visit daily for the community. Lastly, the majority of the 4chan-like commenters are anons from the articles section. The articles comment section and the forums are treated as two entirely separate communities (though both are pretty crude and full of trolls the forum is generally nicer to be in).
