Technical updates + any problems?

Now that this site has had a week to stew and you readers have had a chance to mess about with all those glorious buttons to click on, you will have probably by now either found a problem or realise that there’s something that should exist but doesn’t. So I’m asking you is there anything you would like to have implemented into the site? This includes very simple sidebar stuff, actually especially simple sidebar stuff. I implore you, speak now or forever hold your peace.

I’m also currently messing about with different adverts (this hosting thing aint gonna pay itself ya know). There’s a google adsense on the sidebar at the moment but it looks uber ugly so I’m going to try some other methods. I could bombard Gargron with questions again but I think I’ve given the guy enough hassle as it is.

I’ve been mucking about with amazon affiliates, which is actually a hell of a lot more relevant than google ads. Instead of advertising some silly get-rich-quick scheme I could advertise some anime dvds for whatever show I’m talking about in a post. Instead of accidentally clicking on an advert because it promised you pictures of some Taiwanese ladyboy, you think to myself “why, I would love to own Death Note/Last Exile/Samurai Champloo after that post. Oh look, I can buy it here! How useful is that and even help contribute to one of my favourite anime blogs”. They had all these cool things I could put up but I realised halfway through that it was sorta pointless advertising all these dvds because I was on the uk version and most of my visitors are from North America.

Woah, really exciting post there Scamp

Yeah sorry, exciting and informative posts shall resume after this. Well, at least I think they’re exciting and informative…

    I’ve really liked how the site has come so far, but my only complaint is that it doesn’t have a ‘recent comments’ thing on the sidebar like Bokutachi. XD Sorry, I guess I’m too used to going over there and checking lazily who might have posted a reply, haha. ^^;

    I’m left a little confused on your ‘about’ for the Cart Driver, but that’s probably because I one of the few dolts who haven’t watched major animes like Code Geass or Death Note or whatever. But you did saw that you would probably rewrite that paragraph one day, so I guess I can’t complain. *sigh*

    Okay, actually, I lied. I find it a little hard to read what the words on the sidebar in purple a little hard to read, but since I’ve been on here for a while, I’ve pretty much just memorized what they say and don’t pay too much attention. I’m sure that the whole point of having an…eyecatching color was to draw your attention to those, but haven’t my eyes strained enough that’s really just my opinion. XD

    Damn, I hope this *slightly* long post doesn’t make it look like I’m BMWing…the site looks good~Gargron did a fantastic job with it. :)

    @Humanity_Cat

    Boom, recent comments now exist! Not sure why there’s no pictures but it probably looks better that way.

    Yeah that about page needs work. That part that’s already there is simply to explain why the name, which I’m sure is most peoples question when they first visited the site. Plus, it’s added incentive to watch Code Geass, which is always a good thing.

    Also, what purple text are you referring to? I can’t see any purple writing myself

    I see the sidebar recent comments thing, but a ‘# Comments’ thing at the top or bottom of each post on the main page would be useful too. Other than the ‘-th’ thing with the dates, the rest looks good.

    How bout you make the links for pictures. what im trying to say make them so that i only have to click them ones and i can see the images instead of going trough 3 links to get to see the full image. idk if i make my self clear.

    @EO

    I’d never even noticed that –TH thing before. It would probably be better off with just the number and nothing after it. Both that and the # comments thing are stuff to bring up with Gargron.

    @mv

    I know exactly what you mean but I’m not sure if there is a way to rectify that. I know what you mean by it being a bit annoying so I’ll see if there’s a simpler way around that

    It looks less cluttered with no icons. ^ ^ Thanks!

    And, ah-hh, I just realized that it’s the color the text changes to after you click it.…hehheh. I’ll just deal with it. XD

    *looks over at the sidebar and shakes head* Google has some of the weirdest ads…heh, I’m waiting for the ‘adoptable aliens~like real children, only you can shake them harder!’ ad to come up.…but it probably won’t, if your ad section only corresponds to subject. (<—ramble)

    I just want the blog body width to be a bit more. Then it’s win win win.

  8. Posted January 3, 2010 at 11:59 pm | Permalink

    Yeah, what EO said. That’s been my only problem with this site so far. Kudos for sticking with a linear commenting system. So many trendwhores are going over the a threaded comment system, but I find them an unnecessary pain in the ass to follow sometimes, especially when the conversation starts getting in depth (that commenting style seems to ignore that often, when someone says something is just as important as what they said. It’s called “context” and if people want to reply to something specific, that’s what blockquotes are for.)

    Good job on having a W3C valid site as well. Not many people have that and it’ll do wonders for your PageRank. You should buy Gargron a beer for that or something.

    Ahh, lol I’m such a dunce. Wasn’t paying attention that this was yourrrrr site. Mmmmm, idk, besides liking “lighter” layouts, everything’s real fast and smooth. Hell, I need to be making a post like this for my super involved site –_-”

    Overall, everything’s good so far. I might add a “follow me” tweet social media sign by the RSS and maybe something else like email you, but otherwise, nice job scamp :)

    Everything looks really good except the main content is kinda very small, if you add more width to it then it would look really good and write about yourself in the pages section, other then that it looks really good :)

    @Seinime

    That’s been one of the constant questions I’ve been asking myself is what I want the body width to be. I actually quite like the fact that it’s thinner than average but I’m beginning to wonder whether it should be slightly wider now.

    @Sorrow-kun

    I never actually considered using threaded comments. I’m used to not having them but if you consider that to be a plus point to the site then I’ll continue the way it is.

    W3C valid site? Not entirely sure what that means but hurrah for having that too I guess. BTW, judging by some of his comments over twitter, I think Gargron has had probably enough beer recently.

    @FaS

    Noes, I like my darker colour scheme! There’s a twitter thing up the top by the pages. As for e-mail, I’m going to add that to the about page when I finally get around to writing that up properly.

    @Ruby

    Seems to be a common occurence that I need to write up that about page…argh, I’ll get to that today, I swear!

    The links on the side change to purple, and that makes them hard to read. Humanity_Cat(I totally write Humanity_Cart…) touched on it earlier.. Plus, the words in those are are so tiny… *squint*

    OK, I’m currently on a computer that’s got an older version of Internet Explorer and I can finally see what you’re talking about. Those links should be changed to pink or something (I can’t believe I’m suggesting pink for my blog). The purple is completely unreadable

    Is there somewhere on your site where it says how to upload the avatar pic for commenters? (So many people here have already done it — did I miss the memo? ;) )

    @Jan Suzukawa

    Type ‘gravatar’ into google and follow the instructions. It works across pretty much every blog and comment site
