Steins;Gate episode 4

::Note:: While I shall forever remain loyal to my Empress Drossel, I won’t continue blogging Fireball Charming. I really don’t want to blog more than 2 shows a season as it restricts the time I have to post other stuff. So for this season, it’s just Steins;Gate and [C]

I am far more disappointed than I probably should be that these two didn’t take back the IBN computer in a cart. I’m not doing a very good job of living up to this blogs name if I don’t post a picture of people driving carts every once in a while. Even if they’re pulling the cart, it would still be good. Heck, it would be better because it would be an ‘ironic twist ho ho ho’ on the original.

Let’s take a look at what actually happened in this episode, plotwise.

  1. Daru couldn’t decode the stuff he found on SCERN so gave up in frustration
  2. Kyoma found out where the IBN computer was, the one John Titor told him could translate the code, from Ferris
  3. Kristina came back on the team out of sheer curiosity
  4. She and Kyouma went to pick up the computer at the shrine

Yet this episode dragged that all out to make up the entire course of the episode. Obviously there’s more to all that, such as wise-crack remarks about Daru’s weight (I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard at a simple fat joke as Kyouma’s “Daru is like the universe: Ever expanding” line). But this is the first time in the series I don’t think it got the pacing right over the mystery reveal. In particular the maid cafe scene. Kyouma wondering whether he had wandered into a different dimension was funny. Them playing a card game was dumb and pointless. What did that teach us anyway? Pah, stupid scene.

You hardly expected me to not use this picture now, do you?

The episode was mainly made up of Huuooouuoouuiiin and Kristina arguing with each other, and I think the show has finally nailed down their relationship. As in, they’ve finally made any scene with just the two of them fun to watch simply because it’s those two. What I like about them is how Kyouma’s mad personality constantly throws Kristina off her stride, catching her off guard and generally refusing to allow her to conjure any sort of comeback. At least, most of the time. Occasionally she gets one over him though, and it’s precisely the fact that she is capable of doing so and rubs her victory in his face that makes it click so well. It’s like the reverse situation of Lawrence and Horo from Spice and Wolf. It’s the fact that Lawrence is occasionally capable of out-smarting/flirting Horo that makes it click so well. Now all the Kyouma/Kristina relationship needs is some genuine romantic tension and flirting. No, you’re not allowed to put an X between their two names yet. They’re not a dose of romantic tension so far. Calling each other perverts doesn’t count as a legitimate call to ships.

What do I call him anyway? Okarin? Kyouma? Huuooouuoouuiiin? El Psy Congroo? Ah whatever, I’ve talked abut him enough in the past few posts, time to talk about Mr.Braun now. I honestly never noticed his “I ♥ CRT” apron before this episode. His favourite new anime is “My CRT Can’t Be This Cute”, to go along with Large Hadron Collider-tan. I read somewhere that his apron was pretty good at keeping in with the theme of the show. The whole ‘living in the past’ thing. IBN computers, old web phenomenons etc. It might be a bit of a stretch to go there though. Honestly, I think it’s just you would genuinely see this kind of apron in Akihabara. I like Mr.Braun a lot. Heck, I love most of the characters in this anime. It’s just the not-so-good characters are made look even worse comparatively so. Also I think I’ll hate any character who systematically inserts nyan into everything she says. Friggen catgirls grr…

Huououin’s Made Scientist laugh does it every time. Man I like how he does it every time.

To bad about the chart, but if they did have a chart Huououin wouldn’t be able to tease Christiiiina by letting her walk backwards. I love how he always messes with almost everyone.

    Everexpanding Universe joke ftw!

Btw, I still can’t believe that shrine maiden is a actually a 17 year old guy.

      >Btw, I still can’t believe that shrine maiden is a actually a 17 year old guy.

I’m waiting for the twist where it turns out he’s actually a girl, pretending to be a guy who looks like a girl.

I knew it. I was thinking wether they were trying to mess with us by making us think she’s a boy and later revealing she is actually a girl.

        *Rages randomly to everyone*

or kyouma making another conspiracy theory that she MUST be a boy due to harem rules or something like that. lmao.

I would LOVE it if they revealed the trap was not a trap at all. Way to re-trap the trapped

He didn’t drop it, he is still watching, just not blogging it. Like I said before, don’t rush the chef or the meals quality’ll drop. Blogging 3 shows at a time is a bit over the top for a student. Even if the 3rd one is just a 3 mins short anime.

Well, I meant “dropped” from blogging.
Ugh. But man how I love it~

The visual novel nature of this series was far too apparent in this episode. Main character needs item. Main character goes to NPC. Triggers event that leads to next NPC. Triggers event that leads to NPC that actually has item. And so on. So while it might take 20+ minutes to go through such a sequence in the actual game, there’s no way it should be dragged out this long in the anime adaptation. They can totally do a better job of condensing stuff.

At least it isn’t to the point where it’s a dealbreaker. The characters and dialogue are making up for it for the most part.

I find it interesting how Huouoin is actually not always just a big talker. Him looking for clues and putting the pieces together is absolutely necessary. Along the way lots of his amusing interactions with other ppl is the second aspect that makes Steins;Gate.

Btw, the deleting of bgm in this anime perfectly fits in it.

I actually like this more than C, even when C has the pretty eyecandy. But I really love Okarin and his interaction with all the other characters.
Besides the trap and the catgirl. I mean, really, in Real Life, crossdressers look way different! In fiction, the trap in question always looks like the perfect girl. I mean, what kind of cosmetic surgery has he been going through?

Well, you gotta remember this is from japan. It’s pretty hard to distinguish gender in asians when they are TRYING to look like the opposite sex. I know from experience considering the surprising amount of asian drag queens and asian lesbians I encounter. XD

@ dropping fireball: I KNEW IT D: lol jk

i think i tolerated cat girl because everytime she talked and said nya i had the nyan cat theme song running through the back of my head. AHHH THAT SONG *bursts into fits of giggles*

i almost snorted out my lemonade at the expanding daru joke. lmao. gotta love kyouma and his serious delivery of such jokes.

ughhhh kyoumaxkristina do not want ;( not really liking kristina’s character except for how kyouma makes fun of her all the time. no romantic tension kthx.

(i kept typing kyouma as “kyouya” -_- doesnt help that miyami mamoru whats his face plays kyouma, further connecting it to host club)

I laughed a lot this episode. Actually I’ve laughed a lot at the entire series so far. Was this meant to be a comedy or a mystery anime?!

You are a complete mad man. Where do you find the time to watch 12 series? Seriously, do you have no other hobbies? Responsibilities? Don’t you cook dinner? (on that note use the microwave more). I mean, I’m only watching eight sho–…

I have no life. AT LEAST I’M BEHIND ON SOME OF THEM!

If there is any character that’ll be remembered this season, it’ll definitely be Huouin. Agreed that his fat joke was perfect as well.
As an episode that focused more on the relationships between the characters than the big picture, I felt it succeeded on quite a few levels, but it didn’t have the appeal that the other three had.

Well there’s (still) no romantic tension between Okarin and Kuriiiistina so it was good to get some scenes with them two alone. Also, Okarin turned the tables here, as you said, and actually threw quite a few surprises at Kurisu. It was about time he got some wins against Kurisu although he’s the character who has to suffer all the humiliation in this anime so eventually he’s always being made fun of. I almost feel bad for him but it’s true that he also has to get some of his sanity back. But then again, his insanity is what makes him so enjoyable and useful (whenever he is)

Also, I agree; the game scene was completely a means of filling time as we didn’t get any hints for IBN at that point. The only thing that could (with a lot of self-denial) be considered useful is the fact that we got to learn something more about Feiris-nyanyan
