Steins;Gate episode 12

A new Steins;Gate post has arrived! Tuturu~

…oh wait, bad time for that I guess.

The curse of episodic blogging a series is you start forming your potential post while you’re watch the episode. Which is a pretty stupid thing to do when the final moments of the episode change what will be the entire focus of your pre-planned post. For example, I was planning to use the majority of this post to explain why I didn’t think Mayuri was a good character. In a show with such mulit-faceted characters like Okabe and Kurisu, and how their interactions bring out the various sides of either character, and how much they are clearly made for each other, Mayuri sticks out like a poorly developed thumb.

There’s no depth to her character. She only has one side, that being her happy go lucky doofus side. I’ve never liked that sort of character, from Kobato to Nessa to…well, pretty much half the characters ever voiced by Hanazawa Kana. You can use a one-sided character well if you place them in various scenarios to see how that single-dimensioned character will react. But Steins;Gate doesn’t use Mayuri like that. She simply goofs around in the background, acting as the naive innocent kid that drags Kyouma and Kurisu back to earth. She’s a framing device for other characters, rather than a character in her own right.

However I can’t talk about that now, seeing as what happened.

…oh wait, kind of late for that.

That’s right. Mayuri is dead! No more Mayushi in this anime. No more Hanazawa Kana voiced moeblobs who cosplay as maid catgirls with blonde hair. The Day the Tuturu Died. No Tuturu for Old Men. The Silence of the Tuturu. To Kill a Tuturu. Requiem for a Tuturu. Grave of the Tuturus. She’s gone forever. Shot in the head. With a gun. That fired a bullet. In her friggen head. People don’t survive that (unless your name is Johann Liebert). Your ship has been burned. Your glorified framing device has left the scene. Never again can Okabe furtively glance at her to see if she’s happy. Never again can he fret over her happiness like a panicked father worrying whether his daughter is being bullied at school.

She was the figurative dam holding back the over exuberance of the scientists. She was the one reeling in Kyouma’s human side, preventing his Mad Scientist projected persona to become his full reality. She was the one grounding Kurisu in the real world, preventing her from becoming too wrapped up in her studies and her angst. She was the only female that would actually talk to Daru, although lol who cares about Daru. Without her, things can only get worse. Events will spiral further out of control. The lab will break apart and start attacking each other. The ‘tuturu’ was a call of peace, but it has been silenced. That’s because she’s dead. Dead I say. DEEEAAAAD!!!

The rest of the episode? Yeah, stuff happened.

Mayushi is dead! Silent girl with the big boobs dressed up in a figure hugging leather suit and shot her. Why did she shoot Mayushi? I don’t know, but it doesn’t matter for the deed has already been done. The deed being that Mayushi was shot in the head and is now ddeeeeaaaad!

…not that I think she’ll remain dead or anything. Stuff can be reversed in Steins;Gate by simply sending a message back to the past. A simple D-Mail telling them to get out of the lab, or to get rid of the computer connected to CERN, is all they need to prevent Mayushi from getting shot. But how long will take? We could be until the very end of the series without Mayushi.

BECAUSE SHE IS DEAD

I liked Mayuri just fine, mostly because she was harmlessly goofy and didn’t really detract from what has been a damn good show (unlike Nessa and Shiro, who made bad shows worse).

    Not that it matters now.

    Because she’s dead.

Are you two trying to engrave the word dead in our minds to link it with Mayuri?

I personaly tought this was one of the less organized episodes except for the sudden plottwist with the labinvation and Mayuri’s dead. Part-time warrior enters, starts a fight with Kurisu, they quarrel. Huouoin tries to stop them, but fails. Mayuri just says one sentence and is able to calm down the both of them.
Okay, I know this is pretty reasonable since nobody dares to defy the almight peacemaker Mayuri, but that part-time warriors resolve is way to weak. She says Kurisu is a Sern-spy, but forgives her just because Kurisu helps her out in a little game. WTF???? Where did all that malicious killing intent for Kurisu go in just a few minutes?

The dumbest thing was Daru not severing the connection with Sern, beforehand when he was told to. I tought Huouoin made clear to stop hacking in Serns system, but nobody notices this and they casualy act like it’s not a problem if Sern is spying on them. Or I didn’t watch properly, or Steins Gate finaly showed some major failing.

Nevertheless this episode didn’t make much sense in a few important aspects. But the overal rate is still high seeing as how some major plottwists appeared like shining-fingers betrayal, Mayuris dead, Huouoins unusualy showing psychological weakness and hesitation and finaly deciding to stop with all the timetraveling.

Why is half of your post used/wasted at the fact of Mayuri being dead? This is one of the rare occasions I feel disappointed with ya, Scamp.

RE: SERN – without that direct access, there’s no way they can announce a working time-leap device to the public, because they don’t have access to black holes. Well that was honestly unexpected. I agree that I doubt she’ll stay dead, but it was still quite a shock. I mean… damn. What the hell, Moeka?

    Yay, Monster reference! *.*
Oh, and Moeka was the traitor, it was so obvious that even I got it right.
Mayuri’s death: after I complained because of the over-tutturu-age after a certain episode, somebody gave me a spoiler so I pretty much saw this one coming… The second part of the spoiler I got told me that the epicness of the anime won’t suffer anything after this development.Of course it won’t follow the same course by simply undoing the death… OK, no more of this for this week, let’s see if it will be as I was told. (hint:if yes, this will easily get in your top 30)
Despite the spoilers I expect the next ep today just as much as I expected this one on Tuesday, which is a 7-fold increase in my interest in Steins;Gate. This episode… if I did that 12 moments of anime thing, this would be one for sure. When the shit hit the fan in Steins;Gate. Drama done right, a rare treat if you watch animes. I literally hardly blinked during that scene.

You know, I didn’t think this episode was anywhere near close to being the best episode of Steins;Gate. Ramping up the stakes doesn’t equate to quality. It was still a good episode, but there were a few lolwhut twists in there

        Posted June 24, 2011 at 4:55 pm | Permalink

Yeah, I know but i was blindfolded by the quality of earlier episodes plus some promises of epicness coming true so I didn’t care about how these plot twists were executed. Maybe when I rewatch the whole thing it will come across…

Moeka said it herself – “Shiina Mayuri is not needed.” Okabe, Kurisu, and Daru all contributed directly to building the time machine and figuring out how to pull off D-mails and time leaps, but Mayuri is only the moral support of the group so she’s of no significance to SERN. This plus the fact that Mayuri witnessed everything that occurred in the lab (even though she didn’t understand it) means that her elimination priority is high.

It’s pretty much guaranteed that Okabe will attempt to save Mayuri no matter what by changing the past. We even see her alive in the preview for episode 13. Whether he’ll succeed with SERN coming after him, though, is another story…

But why kill her though, when it would clearly distress the other members of the group?

    ‘Clap clap clap’

Well bravo Steins Gate, well done! Pretty much the only Hana Kana character, other than Kuragehime’s Tsukimi, that I’ve actually liked in recent years and you made her DEAD. My tuturu txt message alert will now forever be tinged with sadness and grief. There is no justice in this cruel, goddless world. Nessa alive. Mayuri dead.

Well, that’s what you get for being the peacemaker in a suspense drama. Perhaps that’s Moeka ultimate plan; the destruction of all things moe. First the shops, then the cosplayers, then presumably herself. She does look the self-loathing type.

    Also, DEAD!

But the moment I saw part-timer leave , I was unable to bear the thought of Mayushi dying T ^T ,

That being said , I set my friends ringtone when I call her to Mr.Braun’s Daughter “Tuturu~” and when she calls me ,Mayushis’s “Tuturu~” , Win eh ?

I thought Mayuri was an adorable/harmless counterbalance to the overly serious Okabe. Though I agree that considering the subject matter of the series, this probably isn’t the last we will see of her.

You don’t have anything to say about the peculiar time vortex thing that Mayuri appeared in at the beginning of the ep? Usually you jump at the chance to make bizarre conclusions.

    *biggest scoff ever*

holy shit, this anime now has the potential to be one of the greatest things ever even though i dont really have a true idea of what will happen next. i have some fangirl speculations, like uh, kyouma = homura, and you know the rest ;D

i actually like mayuri’s character. she’s the one dimensional character that serves as an anchor for the rest of the characters. she grounds them all and keeps them together. she’s the sociable side that kyouma never had and without her he would have frightened most away with his mad scientisto ramblings. she accepts everyone for who they are immediately with no questions without appearing mary-sue charity-like (like freaking tohru from fruits basket *barf*) and reminds everyone that they’re human and need to eat food and do laundry. certainly without her now shit has truly hit the fan and the characters may begin to unravel, especially kyouma. will his quiet balance of sanity/madness really tip now?

jesus, i can’t wait for the next episode.

    • mcm38
      Posted June 23, 2011 at 11:28 am | Permalink

I like the idea of Kyouma suddenly turning all manly and serious mode, while maintaining his true mad scientis front. If he would start now travelling trough time in order to save everything and Mayuri would be enough for me. Well, not realy. Huouoin is the mad scientis that should take over the world, mwuhahahahah!

    • Scamp
      Posted June 23, 2011 at 10:42 pm | Permalink

Kyouma = Homura? OK, I like the sound of that a lot. And the more he tries, the more he fucks up the timeline and the more the world changes, all in a desperate struggle to get Mayuri back. And with each change, the characters change. We get to see evil Kurisu, Daru the real super hacker, and all the other potential things that happen as a result of Kyouma mucking up with the timeline.

…holy fuck, if they did that, that would be so fucking awesome and actually use the built up stuff from the first half so damn well.

      • Posted June 24, 2011 at 5:07 pm | Permalink

Minor spoiler but the lynch pin to all this ISN’T Mayuri (making the Madoka comparison slightly tenuous), but Kurisu. Something happening to HER changes the future, though only in that you get two different flavors of ‘We’re doomed’ timelines to choose from.

Yeah, the cast is well and truly effed.

Not that most of you will know how it is to see your silbling dead.
