I have to wonder about the person who decided that Sengoku Collection would be a great idea to turn into an anime. Get it guys, it’s about Oda Nobunaga and the Sengoku Era and all that, except they get put into the modern era! Phwoar, how about that, but it gets better. Because Oda Nobunaga is…wait for it…a hot teenage girl!
To be perfectly honest, Sengoku Collection is harmless. If you had never seen any anime in your life ever, you may even find it slightly charming. The dialogue has an honest feel to it that lacks irritating self-referential content or brain-dead stupidity on behalf of the writing staff. The animation is perfectly serviceable too. They’ve gone for blobby character designs, and by all means it works just fine for the slapstick approach to humour it’s going for. The backgrounds have this neat look as though they’re painted on vellum, similar to the look Valkyria Chronicles had.
But we don’t live in a vacuum. Maybe the creators of this did though, because it’s hard to fathom what anyone saw in this to warrant anything beyond a quick dismissal. It’s a bit crazy that anime can make an idea like turning their country’s most famous warrior and general into a hot teenage girl a dull premise. It’s going for that idea that Oda is a super powerful charismatic person who makes people bow down before them, but the writing just isn’t anywhere near good enough to make that believable. Sengoku Collection made me respect Medaka Box more for how they depicted Medaka as this all powerful personality, enough to make me consider watching that for a couple more episodes instead.
They also tossed in a generic male lead, who’s only defining characteristic appears to be that he likes whales. There are whales all over his room, and even on the helmet he gives Oda. I don’t see why he even has to be in the anime. The story is about Oda travelling modern Japan and catching all the other Sengoku era warriors, who have also turned into hot teenage girls. That doesn’t need some potato on a stick following him around, getting embarrassed when she takes off her clothes.
I’m confused as to why this exists and who the audience is. Does genderswapped sengoku era stuff have this big of an audience to warrant a new one every year? I could see this appealing to people about the age of 13 and have never seen any other anime before, or perhaps even those who’ve watched 500+ anime and will watch anything that isn’t offensively bad. Because Sengoku Collection isn’t offensively bad at all. It has just been done 50 bajillion times before and 50 bajillion times better.

I’ve always wanted to watch a good Sengoku era anime. I tried BASARA and that was a snooze. Now, I know this is a snooze too. Darn, will I ever find a good Sengoku anime?

Do you even have subs for hyoge mono ? I understand little of japanese but the language that they use in it makes understanding the raws impossible

Yawn. This show is just so mediocre and “meh”. At least the bad shows are actually vaguely entertaining because they suck. This just doesn’t evoke any reaction at all.

There is another one coming in the next season, called Oda Nobuna No Yabou.
At least that one actually takes place in the Sengoku era, but it’s still genderswapped.

So this is the brilliant trick up the sleeves of those anime director’s tired of negative feedback about their Yui Everybland leads: give them a random hobby or interest? Sure, that counts as actual personality. Frickin’ genius!
At least these non-characters are less offensive in inconsequential fluff like this. It’s when they’re stuck in supposedly serious shows that my blood boils. I’m looking at you, Claymore!
I diss and dismiss any anime with Sengoku in its title. Japan seriously needs to stop making these things.
