Shiki episode 1

Denuske has returned! You now have another reason for watching this show. Your first reason should have been obvious though. Shiki is the latest anime in the Noitamina timeslot. This timeslot previously held Eden of the East, Honey and Clover, Moyashimon, Nodame Cantabile, Tatami Galaxy, Paradise Kiss THE LIST GOES ON! If you’re worried about Artfaggory then don’t be, this doesn’t have that. The character designs are a little on the funky side but that’s really pushing it.

Shiki is a mystery horror series that takes its time building up the suspense. I knew this already going into the series and this episode did little to disprove that. This episode sets the scene, creates the atmosphere and introduces us to the characters, none of which are particularly nice people but eh. Everything feels extremely deliberate, carefully paced and done with a fine hand that knows full well what it’s doing. I can understand why people might find this frustrating to watch though. Not an awful lot happens. However I’m one of the worse people around for getting bored and frustrated extremely quickly and I enjoyed the episode so take from that what you will.

This is not an accurate depiction of what happens in the episode.

Since very little happens in the episode though, I don’t really have anything else to say. So lalalala distracting you from the lack of content in this post. Dennou Coil was a pretty cool anime eh. Boku Sacchi and wasn’t afraid of anything.

Hmm.. not bad not bad. I liked the opening by Buck-Tick.

The content.. well, the content itself is pretty good. Reminds me kinda of Hellgirl actually..

Hell Girl…yeah, I can definately see that comparison. The ANN reviews were comparing it to Higurashi and Ghost Hunt, neither of which I’ve seen so I can’t compare

“the characters, none of which are particularly nice people”

I wonder what to make of this. One of Natsume Ono’s earlier works, 12 Kingdoms, featured a number of characters that I disliked upon first meeting, but who really grew, and thus became quite likable. Could she be setting up that kind of dynamic?

I doubt it somehow. The mystery horror setting isn’t the type that makes you grow attached to characters. 12 Kingdoms is as much a coming of age story, one that you naturally should grow to like the characters more

Well, that is a good point. With people dieing they might not have the luxury of character growth.

First episode is what you’d expect. Still, I thought it was pretty damn enjoyable. There’s one character I suspect I will like, but who knows, the character we spent the majority of the episode with was Megumi, who is dead. Or is she? (Seriously, I don’t know).

Well they keep going on about Vampires in the plot descriptions so IDK she could be alive

Manga bored me so yeah. :U Uzumaki made me shit bricks while my usual reaction to Shiki was, “Oh look, another person died.”

Then again, I didn’t bother reading too far since it was so boring.

Yeah I’ve heard that sort of review of the manga before. Veeeeeerrry slow moving, which I’m worried might get on my nerves because slow moving plots do that sometimes. No sign of it yet though

I think I’m more bothered that it isn’t horrifying up to where I read it.

I couldn’t really enjoy this episode because I was too busy hating Megumi. They had to have carefully orchestrated that feeling. I’ve never hated a character so much on introduction. A whiny self-inflated bitch with delusions of grandeur. What’s not to hate? (besides her outfits) I couldn’t wait for her to die.

I hated the new kid from Kuroshitsuji more. Like, more then I’ve ever hated a character in an anime than ever before…wait no, there’s always Aldo Naris from Guin Saga. And Enjin from Yozakura Quartet. Oh god was he ever the worst villain ever

I must have blocked out Enjin. I barely remember him. I actually liked the kid in Kuroshitsuji just because he was so over the top I couldn’t help but laugh. When he poked Hanna’s eye out I raised an eyebrow but still enjoyed it.

I like the atmosphere, reminds me of HiguNaku’s setting and all that. Plus, it’s mystery + horror, too.

Not bad for a first episode for me, although not much happens (except at the last part).

I guess i’ll go follow this one.

Took me a while to figure out what ‘HiguNaku’ was

Yeah, that’s a show I really need to watch one day

Denuske! That’s his name! Dennou Coil was a great show. I kept thinking of that dog myself when I saw the dog in Shiki.
