Sekai Seifuku Episode 9: Exploration of the Arbitrariness of Morality Through Masked Elderly Reconciliation

SekaiSeifuku903

Or something less happy.

I’ve talked at length about how dumb, but brilliant, but mostly dumb Sekai Seifuku consistently is. This mostly lies in how it manages to be unpredictable from episode to episode, while having a moment or two of genuinely good writing that elevates it above simply well-executed dumb humor. Case in point, this episode’s subplot involving two elderly hot spring owners, as they find out each other’s dark secret, and come to terms with their differences through implied fucking after nearly murdering a little girl.

There’s a lot at play between the two, who adhere to their rule of perpetual mask adornment to a fault—even going so far as to hide their affiliation with warring groups from each other. Their fight is resolved off-screen, the only hint as to the conclusion being their two non-affiliated masks resting next to each other. For only getting a few minutes of screen-time, the bare basics of a cohesive plot are presented with strong visual cues, the married couple’s implied long years together forming a bond strong enough to withstand the pull of their conflicting loyalties. Or they died, and it’s a dire cautionary tale of the dangers regarding living double lives secret from your spouse. I’d like to assume the former, because this is a happy show where people who get consumed by their desires don’t spontaneously die.

It’s even better because the entire subplot is wholly irrelevant at a glance to what I’d hesitate to call an overarching plot, but it has enough relation to be easily followed and surprisingly far-reaching, even while only being a small component of the conflict between HOWAITO LIGHTO and Zvezda. Just like between Asuta and Renge, there’s enough common ground to perhaps reach a compromise between the two groups. Maybe Zvezda gets to attempt world domination unimpeded, but only on nights with a full moon, or something. I’m sure they’ll figure it out.

I’m not going to pretend that the married couple subplot will affect future events in any way. Sekai Seifuku will plow ahead with almost prodigious irreverence for story progression, continuing to add new elements to itself until it’s a spunk blob of mismatched designs, character motivations, and jokes of questionable pedigree. But holding it together will be periodic explorations of human relationships, and the hard times through which they traverse. That, and Natasha becoming an accidental part of a hot spring monkey posse.

    It was obvious grandpa and grandma got tired from fighting and died, they didn’t fuck, seriously, do you have a thing for senior citizens doing it?

      I just thought they put aside their differences. Maybe they ran away together.

      But neither of those make stupidly long, sensationalist titles, so they’re the wrong interpretations. In all seriousness, I’d like to think that this show would have a married couple simply give up on fighting each other and find a way to reconcile, not kill each other in the process.

        I agree with Inushinde as I felt like the couple was foreshadowing for Asuta and Renge. Then again, it may be OMINOUS foreshadowing.

        but but that would mean every scene in this show is actually well thought out and carefully planned to reference another scene or the plot itself! Which would make it a more awesome show than it already is!

        I can’t comprehend that level of complexity in a show with a little girl conquering the world as a major plot point!

        I mean I was already warned about the complexity of the plot the stories of this writer makes, but NOT that level of complexity! That would mean every scene there was is not random!

        mind=blown.

    The blue/yellow masks in combination with the dividing blue and yellow-colored sides of the hallway in the beginning was a nice touch.

    No mention of your favorite near/far-sighted robot blasting the now-traitorous Odin from miles away with a gigantic laser after smelling him smoke?

      I’ve banged on about that enough for one series of posts, I think.
