Sekai Seifuku Episode 8: Kate-men Rider

Zvezda proves capable of traction
In the well-worn genre of action
Even when lives are clearly at stake
Those lives are of hardened chefs that bake cakes
And can stop steamrollers in their tracks
With rolling pins pulled from their ass.
A mix of the silly with a face-po
Gives life to this wonderful show.

Fight choreography is well done
Mixing the raucous with fun
Sekai Seifuku is smart to assume
That nobody exists in a vacuum
Motives and relations tend to collide
Tangentially or directly, it finds.
It gives depth to its wacky world
As Zvezda’s existence starts to unfurl.

Though the element that I most favor
Is the focus on Kate’s behavior
Forever acting a precocious child
Cheating at games and getting Asuta riled
Or tripping herself as she tries to say
Complex words like patisserie.
When she’s coaxed into admitting cheating
She sheepishly gives up a chance fleeting
To meet her hero Robobutler
Fucker kind of rhymes so let’s use fucker.

White Light is portrayed on shaky ground
Their moral compass not terribly sound
I’ve said this before but am proven right
Through the iffy means with which they fight
Not being above using mind control
To accomplish their sordid goals
Their employment of White Falcon is telling
That good intentions aren’t what they’re selling.
She proves herself rather flamboyant
Hypnotizing Zvezda to their detriment

Week after week the situation ramps
Without compromising its aesthetic camp
And it’s consistently done with such aplomb
That it’s never short or overly long
And now that I’m done with this post
I think it’s time to make some well-earned toast

Out of everything we’ve seen so far, this episode really takes the cake. In the beginning I was smiling with glee at Kate’s adorable antics. In the middle I was cheering for Monsieur Chef Badass with his goofy accent. Near the end I was enthralled with the fight scenes. Also, I was worried that it was curtains for our man Goro. Good thing he’s still around and I guess we now know why he’s so fond of sugary sweet treats.

You can have your Samurai Flamencos, Kill La Kills and Space Dandies. For my anime dollar, Sekai Seifuku is easily the best show on right now – using the resources and power conferred by animation to tell a soulful story in a cheeky style. I know that what a lot of people want from their stories about “lolis” isn’t what Sekai Seifuku is giving them, which makes me feel even luckier that something like this can still get made and distributed. May the light of Zvezda shine upon you!

Things got weirdly serious in this episode. Also that fight choreography was just perfect.
