Sakura Trick 8 – Kiss of the Spider Woman

sakura-trick-yuu-gets-hit-with-volleyballFor all the pontificating I may do on the Art of Comedy, it is not difficult to make me laugh. Case in point: Yuu getting hit with the volleyball followed by her immense squeal of pain made me laugh longer and harder than anything in the show so far. It’s the Sakura Trick equivalent of the American cinematic classic Man Getting Hit By Football. Really, it’s not the actual volleyball strike that’s hilarious (though that is funny) so much as the emphatic grunt expelled from Yuu as she takes that ball head on. It is the type of noise only cartoon characters get to make and still be so hilarious. I mean, if a real person got tagged that hard and made that noise, it would still be funny, but I’d feel bad afterward about laughing. (Which I should, because, you know, I’m a giant asshole for laughing at someone’s pain.) Real person playing a fictional character getting hurt hilariously is funny, but there’s always the chance it looks legit painful and cuts in on the comedy a bit. Maybe that’s more or less funny depending on who you are.

Cartoon characters, though? They take that shit and they’re fine afterward. Laugh away, friends! Punishment means nothing, FOR I AM INVINCIBLE. Yuu gets lots of girl kisses and feels all better later. It’s her version of Popeye’s spinach, basically, and man I can’t stop laughing at the thought of Yuu growing ridiculous muscles and beating the piss out of bad guys after getting a kiss from her main squeeze. Someone get me the money to make this show happen.

Given my meh feelings on Sakura Trick, I would have been fine with just the volleyball bit, but I actually enjoyed the wedding part in the first half. Here’s the thing with misunderstandings: when they’re used for drama, they are mostly fucking stupid; when they’re used for comedy, though, they can be damn funny. Yuu thinking Haruka is actually proposing marriage to her and forming an impromptu wedding ceremony is ridiculous cartoon sitcom logic, but it’s easy to buy because Yuu has been portrayed as a silly airhead so far. The bits where she’s like “WTF?????” when Haruka’s mom is addressing her and Yuu thinks she’s basically holding a final audition to be Haruka’s wife is the kind of cute, funny stuff I could go for. I could even forgive all the lovey dovey stuff I don’t care about at all afterward.

anyway dumb poetry time lol

Yuu did not dig this.
In fact, it looks like a kill!

“growing ridiculous muscles and beating the piss out of bad guys after getting a kiss from her main squeeze. Someone get me the money to make this show happen.”

Kiss power-ups have been done before. They did it in Sekirei and their doing it now in (my current favorite guilty pleasure) Witchcraft Works.

No need to feel guilty about Witchcraft Works, my friend. Read my comment on it and the replies on the previous entry here.

Don’t forget the breast poking power-ups from High School DxD!

I’ve never seen Sekirei. Is it similar to what I described? I’ve seen some kissing power-ups of sorts — Simoun comes to mind, though I suppose that is more a pre-battle ritual — but I can’t recall anything like what I wrote about. That of course doesn’t mean I haven’t seen it, haha.

No feminine arachnid monstrosities? Your title is a sick lie, Shinmaru! I should sue you for blogging malpractice.
