Here’s how much of a baby I am: Even the mere threat of someone licking up another person’s saliva is enough to make me react like, “EW EW EW GROSS NO DON’T DO THAT EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.” Now imagine me watching Mysterious Girlfriend X. (Just kidding. I didn’t watch that because I am a big baby.)
Unlike my usual stance with the romantic drama in this series, I think potentially interesting things could happen with Kaede piecing together Haruka and Yuu’s relationship. I don’t think this is the type of series to do a serious examination of what it’s like to come out to your friends and family, nor am I sure it would be all that appropriate given the show’s generally lighthearted tone. But even the characters reexamining Haruka and Yuu before accepting their relationship without too much trouble could be kinda interesting. There doesn’t even have to be “But are they even the same people anymore?!?!?!” dumb drama, because nobody believes girly kissing out in the open would make any of these people suddenly dislike each other. Just something to see them in a slightly different light, even if it ends up all positive.
But enough drama talk, here’s Yuu getting plastered with snowballs. True to my stated stance on silly yelps of pain (they are wonderful), I laughed every time Yuu got pelted with snowballs and snorted or whatever it was. The first one where the power of Yuzu’s snowballs launches Yuu backward is particularly amusing. That would have been funny on its own, but I like the touch of Yuzu blasting Yuu with snowballs immediately after she complains about Haruka treating her like a kid. That’s what we in the business refer to as “timing.” (Note: I am not in the business, whatever that business may be.)
Other funny things in the episode:
- Democracy at work with the sensible girls not wanting to go outside, but then straying from their convictions because their girlfriends are venturing into the frozen wasteland. This is the political system at work.
- The idea of a group that does the worst at jump roping being punished with cleanup duty. Seems kind of messed up! “Hey, y’all are shit at the jump rope, so clean up the mess better jump ropers left behind.” Clearly this P.E. teacher believes in toughening up today’s children.
- Haruka getting locked in the room because everyone who has seen like 10 episodes of anime saw that coming from a mile away. I did enjoy the way Haruka’s cell phone was accounted for, though. Writers today have to jump through so many more hoops to get these tired stories to work.
- Haruka thinking about Yuu the whole time she was in the room and then getting “in the mood” when Yuu appeared through the window. This is accurate to the teenage experience.
