Ore Monogatari is the story about an adorable big troll. He has leopard print shorts and a ginger afro reminiscent of a certain FAVAROOOOOOOO! He wants to make friends with people but he’s just not cute enough. It’s like a sort of reverse Shreck. Oh right, and there was also this other generic shoujo anime stapled onto the end of it. Almost forgot about that part.
I feel like it’s worth pointing out here that I don’t really like typical teenage romance shoujo anime. At all. Even the supposedly really good ones. Even the ones that attach an old card game onto the general story. So while I did quite like the opening episode of Ore Monogatari, I have serious doubts that enjoyment will continue. My enjoyment comes almost entirely from our main character making big goofy faces and being the sort of lovable earnest simpleton that made me fall for Harima Kenji from School Rumble. He bumbles through life with genuine goodwill that makes you want to give him a big hug. He would be a great character in any anime.
He is, however, in a super generic highschool shoujo romance anime. He is in an anime where sparkles appear in the air and soulful delighted piano music plays over a 5 second scene of the main girl love interest simply catching her breath while sparkles and flowers spray around in the background, emphasising the extreme importance of this moment in which…err, a teenage boy decides he quite likes a teenage girl. The primary story appears to be revolving around a teenage guy who likes a girl but thinks the girl likes his hot friend. That’s sort of it.
I do genuinely like this opening episode. The big dude does make me laugh. But I’ve been here too many times before so I guess I’m just trying to mentally prepare myself for what appears to be the inevitable. This is supposed to run for 24 episodes and I just can’t see how a premise so thin can hold up for that long without falling for the usual genre pitfalls of general faffing about and refusing to move the central romance in favour of having more shots of the main girl with flowers around her head to really drive home that yep, this guy quite likes her. It’s like that anime Lovely Complex, which equally had some fun moments at the start before it realised it had 20-something episodes to fill so faffed about as I gradually realised how thin this premise was and how little there was to dig into.
What is Ore Monogatari about? More fundamentally, rather than plot descriptions? That scary looking people want to be loved too? Fine, will you be able to tackle the multiple facets of that in 24 episodes? Or will you stick to purely wanting to be liked by a teenage crush? Again I am being very harsh on an episode I did like. And many people do like your Kimi ni Todokes and Lovely Complexes of this world. But you people are not me and are wrong anyway and probably smell bad.
