Noitamina announce Ore no Kawaii Okaa-san and Magical♥TrapChu for Winter 2012

Promo material for OreKa

Noitamina, the popular late night programming block dedicated to hosting anime aimed towards a demographic outside the usual young adult male group, have announced their anime for the winter season of 2012: Ore no Kawaii Okaa-san and Magical♥TrapChu.

Ore no Kawaii Okaa-san is a heartwarming comedy/drama about a mother who travels back in time to meet her son she never knew. Problem is, the time travelling has also reversed her ageing, turning her into a cute 10 year old girl, leaving it up to her son, now a 16 year old teenage boy, to take care of her. The director Keitaro Motonaga (Akane Iro Ni Somaru Saku, School Days) said that in his adaptation he would strive to match the tough issues of parenthood and the main character’s Oedipus Complex of the original Light Novel.

Magical♥TrapChu took the popular transgendered character from the visual novel, Chu-Chu Train Time, and made him the star of his own television anime. The producer of the Noitamina timeslot said he hoped the show would combine the values of Wandering Son and ride the Madoka Magica popularity wave to produce an anime that would deconstruct the very idea that magical girl anime had to be about young girls.

Both anime are set to air this winter.

Both of these shows sound too good to be true… sadly enough.

The last line of the article offers some meager hope though: “Yutaka Yamamoto, the director of the Black Rock Shooter video anime and the founder of Ordet, reported on his Twitter account on Friday that the new project is not his.”

Why not just make an anime adaptation of the story of Oedipus and get that off everyone’s mind?

Is it alright to weep for the future now?

Actually, I would totally watch that.

Oedipus the Animation would be on the top of my To Watch list, that’s for damn sure.

I first thought that this would be shit, and then hearing how the producers are all about ‘man this is cool and subvert expectations and yeah and cool and yeah!’, my hopes have risen… still, those lines feel like some lame excuse. :( hard to beat madoka is suffering

I believed you for a second. Then, I was a little devastated to learn we’re getting Black Rock Shooter on Noitamina instead of a Wandering Son/Madoka combo. :( That would have been hilarious.

Hey, I’m looking forward to it. Perhaps huke has a truly interesting story (I’m interested) that couldn’t be presented in the OVA for whatever reason. Or perhaps this will be like the BRS game with no alternate school universe.

And Yamakan won’t be directing this time so…

All you can really say is that Noitamina was never special in the first place. Just a marketing idea that eventually proved that only one type of show sells.

I’ve seen the promo of Oreka. I have some reservation seeing that it’s kinda typical but that is actually a boy? I’m sold.

  25. Posted August 19, 2011 at 2:39 am | Permalink

Well done, Ore no Kawaii Okaa-san minus the Oedipus Complex could actually be an interesting anime in the hands of Kyoto Animation (in the vain of a Key work).

Someone must be black mailing Kouji Yamamoto, after Fractale you’d think he wouldn’t touch anything remotely related to Yutaka Yamamoto with a 10 foot pole. Then again, Black Rock Shooter can’t possibly be worse then Fractale.

      Don’t jinx it…

    • Posted August 19, 2011 at 4:42 pm | Permalink

Given the facts (jinx aside), I’m not really seeing much that would speak poorly for this BRS anime. Of course, nothing speaks particularly well of it either, aside from the fact that it will probably at least look and sound nice. As far as I can derive:

–It’s a series about Black Rock Shooter — a collection of neat character and environment designs with no plot of any description attributed to them. Within a few very broad constraints (weapons are involved, for instance) you could make it a series about just about anything. There’s nearly complete narrative freedom, so really the quality lives or dies by what they adapt it into.

–It’s produced by Studio Ordet, who made the BRS OAV, Kannagi, and the dreaded Fractale. However…

–Yutaka Yamamoto, the man primarily responsible for Fractale, is specifically not involved in the production of the anime.

      • Posted August 19, 2011 at 5:09 pm | Permalink

For lack of an edit function, I should probably also append the fact that this series being in the Noitamina timeslot is still fairly baffling, especially if it’s actually a continuation of the OAV. I pray it isn’t.

Then again, I’ll openly admit that I preferred the totally incongruous BRS OAV to the mess of shoddy storytelling, directing, animation, world building, and (absent) character development that was [C].

  26. Posted August 19, 2011 at 8:07 am | Permalink

You had me going there for a bit, then again, I don’t really have any special crush for any given studio, but well played Master Scamp, well played.

OK, OK, OK, everyone please calm down for a minute.
    anteater.jpg

Who the hell said that these animes will suck? Where did you hear it from?

First, this black rock thingy. I saw the OVA, and while it wasn’t ‘best evar’, it was still decent. I still remember the most of it, and this is a good sign. I saw absolurtely NO SIGN of anything related to Vocaloid. There isn’t anything this franchise has done wrong-YET. Now, sailing on dangerous waters, a series is on the horizon!

It could be a FAIL, but remember-it is in Noitamina, house of decent anime.

Now, this Ore no Kawaii Okaa-san: I doubt that Oedpus is the new siscon, they probably left this one in the anime so that they won’t have an another General Male Lead. It even may not be an Oedipus Complex, just a misinterpretation of him missing his mother too. Director also made Akane Iro.. yuck! *spit*
So the Director is an ass whose only success was pointless bloodshed, but it still may be good.

Remember-it is in Noitamina, house of decent anime.

Last, Magical Trap. I don’t know anything about those famous light novels, but that character without any prior appearance in animation deserved a series to him/herself. Like Captain Harlock, or Misaka Mikoto from Index. Sounds good enough already? There is one more good sign.
An obvious but important thing: the story has a trap even in its title, which is important because those perverted “comedies” featuring a trap (you know, where a joke means flashing panties/kicking nuts/yelling Pervert!!) only exploited the trap trope to make boob-grabbing legit. Now this upcoming show openly says that the main character is one. Expect epic jokes, because (and you know it already):

It is in Noitamina, house of decent anime.

Magical♥TrapChu … transgendered character … the values of Wandering Son”

Anyone who took away any kind of values from Wandering Son would know that calling a transgendered person a ‘trap’ is insensitive and offensive. If that was meant to be the joke, then very welll played.
