New Game!! Episode 1: New Game Xrd -SIGN-

NG+101

My biggest problem with the second season of New Game is the tragic oversight of not calling it New Game+. I mean I guess it aids in googling the show (if barely), but it’s one of the biggest opportunities that I’ve seen missed. That opportunity is the size of fucking Africa, and the person in charge of thinking up a name steered right around it. For shame. Show’s legit, though.

If this seems like a petty thing to get worked up over, that’s because it is. There’s just not much in the way of criticism that I can level against something that looks to be more or less the same show that I enjoyed this time last year. It remains on the more aspirational side of the cynical/idealistic spectrum of shows about finding one’s dream job in young adulthood, and looks even better than the first season. Characters are still well designed and charmingly expressive, and the comedy has more hits than misses, revolving around characters with narrowly defined, if well developed archetypes.

The first episode of New Game+, which is the real name as far as I’m concerned, does have a neat way of reintroducing the cast via a performance review. It’s not only an organic way of establishing a progression from the end of one game’s development to the beginning of the next, but also serves to refresh the audience on names and personalities. Aoba seems more ambitious this time around, having successfully completed her first major assignment, which I’m hoping will define her transition from total newbie to somebody with a modicum of experience. While I have no doubt the show will keep interactions between the characters largely positive and good-natured, otherwise Umiko threatening her boss with an airsoft gun would be mostly disquieting instead of just kind of disquieting, it’d be nice if Aoba’s experience led to carving out a stronger space for herself at Eagle Jump. The other characters are looking a bit more static, but this isn’t really a bad thing.

New Game+ made a smart decision to not add more people to the main cast, immediately shutting down Aoba’s notion that a new year always means new hires. The show didn’t do much aside from establishing basic character dynamics in the first season, so a new addition to the cast could possibly dilute personalities and interpersonal dynamics that could already stand for more development. This isn’t to say that the cast of New Game+ is boring; they just leave a lot to be explored, and it’s a testament to the show’s potential that what was only a smattering of what the show has to offer leaves me wanting more. I’m enjoying it and looking forward to more, essentially.

Here’s the thing: I think like working they’re planning on more than 2 seasons, and if they call this one new game+, what will they name the next one? With new game (extra exclamation point) they have a logical path to follow.

I didn’t think I wanted a second season of New Game until it happened. And I know they say they are not getting new hires, but it does look like I see a new face in the end credits. Maybe some worker we haven’t seen before emerges from out of the slave donjon or something.

ANN had an article that said the 2nd season will add 4 new characters, so they’ll be coming eventually.
