Natsume Yuujinchou episode 2
While it may not be my favorite show of the season, I’ve decided to blog Natsume Yuujinchou. My reason being that Natsume is easier to blog as you can discuss it a lot more than something like Birdy the mighty Decode. Birdy you just sit back and watch the sparks fly, blogging it seems a bit of a waste. So instead lets stick to Natsume and his funny looking cat book o’ friends! yay!
Sponsered by LaLa...wtf?
So basically Natsume has stuck to his word from the last episode and is giving back the names to all the spirits (I’m not sure if they call them spirits, the have some other name but it basically means spirits). Some come and ask him politely can they, if he doesn’t mind, woud you be so kind as to give my name back please and thank you *bow* *bow*. Some ask less kindly could they have the book of friends please. They often try to do this by force but Natsume has his Fists of Steel to get rid of them. Failing that he also has a cat that can transform into a two-story high wolf, a bit like Horo from from Spice and Wolf (although, all things considered, I prefered Horo).
Natsume, I don't blame you for s***ing your pants here
It’s also ironic that, even though he has the book of friends, Natsume doesn’t actually have any friends. This is mainly due to the fact that he keeps running away from them.
Anyway, the actual plot of this episode was that some little dude came to Natsume asking for his name back but then it turned out the page with his name on was stuck to the page next to it with a bit of rice paste (gasp! Dramatic Plot Twist). So the plan was to find the other guy who was on the page he was stuck to.
Cyclops, I don't blame you for s***ing your pants either
So after much running around they eventually found the guy they were looking for (who, suffice to say, looked nothing like a dolphin with lipstick). Originally they tried to beat him using a mirror but that didn’t work so well so the funny looking cat did his wolf transformation and beat him up, a far more reliable approach. So Natsume completed his two-in-one name returning attack and all was well.
This was the little dudes helpful picture of the guy they were looking for. I thought it looked like a dolphin with lipstick
Message of the Episode
The plot in Natsume is interesting but the far better part about the show is figuring out what they are actually trying to say with this episode. During this episode Natsume met up with this little old lady who was the sole worshipper of the little dudes shrine. He used to have a whole stream of worshippers but now he only has her, which is the reason for him being so tiny. The reason she continues to pray there is that she is afraid the god of the shrine might get lonely, something which Natsume can understand quite well.
We may only be 2 episodes in but it looks like this may happen to Natsume a lot
One thing she mentioned was that she had once saw the god. He had said, in a very un-godlike fashion may I add, that the weather was very nice. She didn’t respond because she was afraid he might dissapear, but since she has regretted not saying anything. Now I don’t live in Japan but I gather that that kind of stuff is commonplace in Japan. People won’t mention stuff in case it hurts others feelings or troubles them. Natsumes granny is what the show is trying to say. She went out and pretty much forced the spirits to write their name in her book of friends. Actually, she is my favorite character of the show. I love when they do those flashbacks to her when Natsume completes the name-giving FMA impersonation.
She had brough these peaches to put at the shrine. I was convinced they were gobstoppers
Natsumes book ‘o Friends carries off from where it left last time and my impression of the show has changed very little. I love learning about Natsumes Granny and how she got all the spirits to write their names. It remains light-hearted but surprisingly deep. I’m keeping the show at a 7/10 because it hasn’t done anything to really impress, it has just done its job and done it well.
