Monogatari Series Second Season episode 21 – Groucho Marx glasses

vlcsnap-2013-11-26-21h24m18s57They know it, don’t they? Shinbo, Nisioisin and co. know the best part of their show is Senjogahara. They know, and that’s why they love to do so much teasing with her reappearance. The bare handful of appearances she makes after the first arc rarely ever show her eyes and deliberately frame the camera so we never see her properly. The few times she talks it’s over the phone. When she finally does appear back in the show in person, they delay and delay her appearance. Make her talk over the phone as per usual, hide her face until finally we see her and she’s wearing Groucho Marx glasses.

And then Kaiki outdoes her.

vlcsnap-2013-11-26-21h26m30s92Shaft trying to outdo their own head-tilt records with multiple mirror image Kaiki tilts. I wonder if the Shaft headtilt in 30 years time will be this animation staple shot like the Dezaki watercolour still frame. Come to think of it, have Shaft ever combined the two and had a Dezaki watercolour still frame of a character pulling a Shaft headtilt? Crossing streams and all that.

After the last arc being quite poor, I am so excited for this arc. They’ve basically teamed up the two best characters in the show in the closest version Monogatari will come to of a heist arc. I loved how their first coming together was the two of them trying to one-up each other with neither of them drawing attention to the fact. They’re wonderfully stubborn, going to such absurd lengths to call each other’s bluffs that they both end up flying to Okinawa and referring to each other through silly false names and laughable disguises to keep up their respective grudges. I wonder if Meme got his flashy Hawaiian shirt in similar circumstances? I can’t imagine Kaiki in anything other than his funeral director suit, but that’s not to say he couldn’t go wild. Dye his hair, spike it like a shounen protagonist, get him some sandals and voila!

Actually no, sorry, but Kaiki will never look natural as a swinger. He was probably born wearing a shirt buttoned up to the collar.

Two pictures of Kaiki in a row and only one Senjogahara? What has happened to me? Well it’s because the variety of Senjogahara poses in this episode was highly limited, for reasons I outlined at the start of this post. Meanwhile Kaika was swinging his head back, grasping his face, and generally looking beautiful with his Gendo Ikari poses. Plus as I said, he’s the second best character in the show so I’m happy to fill a post with pictures of him.

What I love about his soliloquy time, asides from the fact that he outright called it soliloquy time, was Kaiki was simply trying to find a reason to justify to himself why he was doing something that deep in his own mind he knew he was doing for moral reasons. Not because he owes anyone debt or suffers from a guilty conscious or anything like that. It’s because he’s a Nice Guy After All but can’t be seen as such. I wonder if during his teenage years he was an Arararagi type figure. Not that he’s a giant pedophile and the worst character in the show, but in that he just helped people except in a snarky male-lead-in-a-kyoani-show kind of way. As he got older he turned scamster supreme, probably because he got so sick of people hanging out with the likes of Meme and Gaen Izuko. But deep down Kaiki we know you’re just a big auld softy. Or perhaps not, given that the arc started with him telling the audience to not take any of this at face value. He’s probably still at the shrine checking out the ladies, trying to sell charms to gullible middle schoolers again.

I thought possibly the most revealing moment was when Kaiki splashed coffee in Hitagi’s face upon her saying that she’d be willing to sell her body. Not the behavior of someone who truly values money over everything including his own life.

Interesting observation. Just proves my theory that he’s just a big auld softy

I can’t for the life of me figure out why Sugura Kanbaru is so important to Kaiki, other than she’s a relative of a friend/classmate/past coworker.

Kaiki has a lot in common with a certain half-blood prince, so I expect to see more of his “soft” side come out in this arc.

I can imagine Kaiki standing in front of those middle schoolers saying “I can bottle fame, brew glory, and even put a stopper in death”

You know, I just struck me…the ‘darkness’ (Ougi?) eats beings that lie about their nature and Kaiki lies by nature.

Could be an interesting confrontation at some point…or at least a long winded circular conversation of double talk with both parties thinking that they made their point and walk away.

Ougi eats Kaiki’s personality so all that’s left is a blank shell of a human.

Otherwise known as a light novel protagonist

Kaiki could probably convince it that there’s more important prey to be had, and possibly sell it a few useless trinkets in the process.

My last sentence just made me wonder: is Kaiki a gypsy?

Great silly mustache, great witty talk, great episode. The hilight for me was what LVLLN mentioned up there. I was also loved the part where Kaiki had to convince himself to do something out of character. I liked the how there were multiple angles when he said no but when he said yes, the shot was square in his face.

Holy shit this was awesome episode. I already watched this episode 3 times, which I rarely do. It’s really amazing how 2 characters talking can be so entertaining. Kaikis rank just skyrocketed. I thought he was really mediocre character when he appeared in Nisemonogatari. Maybe I was just disappointed that we got our first true villain and it wasn’t anything special.

I loved the fact Kaiki called Senjogahara a child and she got mad because of that. I didn’t expect Senjogahara to act so normal. That’s what teenagers always say to their parents. It was nice touch to show people that she isn’t that adultlike or different that you think.

I’m also thrilled that our first villain is now the “hero” and my favourite girl Nadedo is the villain. I checked some trivia online and apparently Nision (I don’t know if this is true) interviewed all the seiyuus and he asked what character KanaHana wanted to play and she said that she wanted to play evil character. I always thought that she was chosen because of her really cute/soft voice to play Nadeko. I mean Nadeko was your moe girl of the series.

Also the seiyuu who voiced Kaiki (he also voiced Mustang in Brotherhood) did amazing job.

    Kaiki is the best girl.

I wonder how much of this episode was a lie.

Well Kaiki does say a lie is better than the real thing. And this episode was pretty awesome.

When that plane part came, I just laughed out loud.

I absolutely loved this episode and I love Kaiki. We need more charismatic characters like him in anime, but knowing the industry, we will probably get more plain nice guys or dim witted ass kickers.
A bit off topic, but did you know that Log Horizon’s main character isn’t just a plain good at games everyday nice guy? I was positively surprised, because he turned out to be one of those shrewd genius leader types. Well, the show is still pretty meh.

Anyway…Monogatari. I really hope this arc will outdo all the others. I mean, it’s Kaiki’s point of view and I hope he will go all Locke Lamora style.

I really love how Kaiki stands apart from the rest of the characters of the show. Not only is he very much an adult in a cast of kids, he is also cynical, pragmatic, and very introspective. It’s almost as if he stepped in from outside the show to take advantage of the characters inside it.

Also, the reveal of the connection between Kaiki and Kanbaru added significant depth to his character. It makes me want to go back to Nise and see the circumstances of his visit to her house.
