Monogatari Series Second Season episode 12 – The actual worst girl

vlcsnap-2013-09-23-00h23m52s6If you are reading this long after the episode aired, I’ve skipped forward to episode 12 because there was no episode 11. Well there was, but it was a recap again. Just assume there will be a recap episode after every arc. We haven’t recapped Nisemonogatari yet so they still have material. They’ll probably recap Kizumonogatari at this rate. After this arc we’ll have a full episode recapping the movie, then people will start asking where that movie is and Shaft will go “wait, didn’t we release that already? Oh shit, it fell behind the sofa, we totally forgot about that”. At least, I think last week was a recap episode. I didn’t actually watch it. It could have been an episode entirely of Senjogahara fanservice which ends with her and Kanbaru performing tribadism and I would never know. Tribadism is a pretty great word, right up there with flabbergasted. Taking a sexual act and making it sound like a religion. The Church of Tribadism. Their symbol is a pair of interlocking scissors.

Where was I before I starting talking about lesbians and the continued lack of Kizumonogatari? Oh right yes, there was an episode of Monogatari I was supposed to talk about. Which I have surprisingly little to say about because it involves the Worst Girl. I know I said Hanekawa was the Worst Girl during her arc, but that was mostly me riling up her fans. She had the unfortunate honour of being in scenes with Senjogahara, and you could put an underwear model made out of chocolate ice-cream in a room with Senjogahara and the underwear model would still come out being the less enticing character.

But in reality, it’s the onii-chan fetish girl Nadeko that takes the cake for the actual Worst Girl. She doesn’t even have an annoyingly catchy opening song this time to make up for it this time. It’s compounded by the fact this arc does a lot of call-backs to what happened to her previously and I can’t remember the details myself. That was the arc where Arararagi carted around with Kanbaru so I was far too busy enjoying Kanbaru than paying attention to Nadeko. Plus I’m still not entirely sure what happened in that arc because Shaft never finished animating it so instead just flashed up blank screens saying “yeah we didn’t have time to finish this sorry”.

That was a thing that happened. 4 years later and that fact still cracks me up. Can you imagine if they pulled the same thing with Attack on Titan? Eren faces off against female titan in the forest but then whoops blank screen sorry we ran out of budget.

We did get to see more of the curiously flat-chested dead-eyes girl, who has managed to fulfil my dream of there being a female version of Meme. For being a niece, she doesn’t look an awful lot like him. Despite the dead-eyes, her facial structure isn’t anything like as gaunt as Meme’s is. Personality-wise though, she does have that ability to sound like she knows way more than you but in a way that sounds slightly insufferable and gets under your skin so you want to yell out “YEAH OK FINE I DON’T KNOW EVERYTHING SO WHAT”. Plus her know-it-all attitude would make sense if she’s really from the future as she so heavily implies. Monogatari has gotten pretty time travel-heavy lately, hasn’t it?

She does ramble on a bit too much though. Oh gee golly, a Monogatari character who is a bit wordy, totally rewriting the rulebook here Nisioisin. From the two times we’ve met her though, she’s got this tendency to go off into long-winded spiels that lead to nowhere. More of a nowhere than other characters in this show that is. I’d like her to meet a character who will interrupt her, see if we can get under her skin. Not that anybody in the Monogatari universe ever interrupts each other. You can’t see it between all the weird camera angles, but they’re actually passing around a conch shell and can’t talk unless they’re holding it.

The opening song is surprisingly alright this time. With heavy emphasis on “surprisingly”.

Eh, it was the best from this season but I still don’t like it much.

Next time dead eyes girl comes in with some long winded speech about fuck all, Shinbou should just flash blank screens with something along the lines of “What?” “The fuck is she talking about?” “She’s still talking?” “Are any of you at home following this?”

Shinbo breaking the fourth wall to comment on how shite Nisio’s writing is. That would be AMAZING!

Whaaat. Nothing about the lighting? The responsibility/victimhood stuff (pretty much everything Ougi was talking about, the same way her first speech was reflective of the second arc)? The way the direction has changed now that we’re in Nadeko’s perspective, like her near-panic attack by the telephone, or the fact that she actually notices strangers, unlike Hanekawa or Araragi?

Personally, I thought this was one of the best episodes of Monogatari in general. Smart and creepy and well-directed and pretty. Don’t know what show you guys are watching!

You’re mad. Nadeko’s narration isn’t particularly interesting and neither was her big speech because the directing didn’t contribute anything. I did like some of the tricks when she entered the classroom, and the final scene was well directed but it had nothing to do with what happened earlier in the episode.

They might tie it together later though, we’ll see.

I thought everything tied together too neatly, actually. That was one of my problems with the novel, that it lacked subtlety, and it made its major themes too obvious from the get-go (the other major problem is that it’s Nadeko, and Nadeko is very boring). Ougi and Kuchinawa were both hitting the “no such thing as victims” point so hard that you could see a simple path to her downfall that ended up in that opening scene.

That’s a fair complaint. Hopefully they continue to focus more on the execution that the ideas themselves, since the story seems to have already largely explained itself.

I see through your devious plan, calling each subsequent girl “worst girl” so everyone rages.

I personally don’t think Nadeko is bad at all. She may be submissive and succumb the apparition but she’s still interesting in my book. If I remember correctly, she was more aggressive towards Araragi in the last arc by attempting to seduce him. Even if it’s in a sexual way, she shows that she isn’t a total push over and tries to get what she wants. Then again, she really didn’t get as much screen time as the rest of the girls to show what she’s all about. This arc looks promising for her development. Also I dig her intro.

What I also dig is that we get to see more Araragi and Shinobu tag team fights even though for this one looks like previously Kaminatastic vampire is in a pinch. What if this arc takes place before the Hanekawa arc. That would mean he has yet to become tattered and use that peculiar sword. Let me know if I’m off on that guess.

The style in this arc is off the charts in a great way. It’s quite appealing and I like the use of contrasting colors.

For me, Shinobu is the best girl and bland Hanekawa is the worst.

That scene from the last season playing twister was the only time she was funny. She was the Worst in Bakemonogatari with the most boring arc, and this episode didn’t do much to convince me further.

This. Nise sort of hinted that there is more to her than meets the eye. I’m looking forward to some shit hitting the fan in this arc.

This Ougi girl says she’s Oshino’s niece but I’d say it’s Kaiki that she resembles, definitely looks-wise and maybe personality-wise. I read somewhere that we’ll learn more about her in Kanbaru’s arc, that’s going to be a long wait…

At the very least, you should be excited at the prospect of them killing Nadeko. I don’t think they’re actually going to go through with it. I mean, Araragi’s best victory so far involved him getting cut in half… But still, you can dream.

Man, sounds like you’ve taken a liking to Ougi. The most disappointing thing about Hanamonogatari “Suruga Devil” being delayed might be missing out on a significant Ougi scene in between the 2 appearances we’ve seen so far. Boy oh boy, I’m looking forward to that scene.

I actually really like this OP and I love what it represents.

Here is a comparison of the OP with her OP from the first season:

Wat. Lucky me I started the series much later and watched the BD version. Her arc wasn’t better or worse than that of the other girls – I found the elementary schooler the least remarkable, and Kanbaru. Kanbaru mostly because I don’t even remember what her arc was about (other than her being a lesbian and in love with Senjougahara).

Nadeko at least had that creepy-awesome fanservice part during her arc when they were trying to get rid of the snake on her skin.

What? Everything you said is totally wrong! Kanbaru and Mayoi’s arcs were far and away the best and the creepy fanservice scene was the nadir of the whole of Monogatari!

I can’t even remember Kanbaru and Mayoi’s arcs. They were just… there. Maybe I’d have remembered them better if I didn’t marathon the series.

Sides, Nadeko looks vaguely old enough to fall into my “anime character age” category where I happily ignore that an anime character is supposed to be underage and pretend that all anime series take place in a weird alternate reality where you start middle school at 17 and highschool at 20. It works so far.

I just saw the next episode and it has more talking between Nadeko, the “snake”, and even Koyomi. But the best surprise is Shinobu’s appearance and how she treats her “master”.
