Mitsudomoe episode 1

This actually doesn’t look too bad judging by the trailer and it’s in fairly safe hands with the Minami-ke crew. Seems strange for me to be recommending a show like this but the trailer made me grin so I say go for it

I was right, I was right, nyeah nyeah nyeah nyeah nyeah!

Mitsudamoe is a dumb comedy. Let’s get that out of the way. This is far from the carefully constructed, clever breaking down of social norms that Arakawa was. This is low-brow humour. Small penis jokes and Nipples the Hamster. However it is funny. It’s set up very similar to Hanamaru, except this time the chaotic angle of the classroom is played up to the extreme. It really is just Tsuchi with a rounder head, trying to keep control of a classroom. Heck, we even have a big-breasted love interest who the kids have taken it upon themselves to help kick-start their romance. Where as Hanamru was very innocent in its aproach, Mitsudamoe is far more risque.

I’m still wary of heaping praise on it though. It could potentially get old very fast if these characters have nothing beyond what they’ve shown in the first episode. Hanamaru got through by showing some heart but I’m not sure Mitsudamoe has shown that it has that potential in it’s locker. The other thing I’m slightly wary of is the thing people were touting before it began: Pedo bait. The only thing I have a problem with is sexualising these kids. I have no problem with kids being fascinated with sex (show me one 12 year old kid who isn’t fascinated by boobs) and that’s all this episode had…but I dunno, something about the way they set about doing this episode made me worry. I may sound like a right stuck-up prick here, but pedo-bait shows can all go die in a fire as far as I’m concerned. Please don’t go that way Mitsudamoe.

Whatever about future predictions, this episode was genuinely funny. It may have been low-brow and relied upon quick-fire jokes when some of them fell flat on their face, but I still lol’d more than once watching this episode. So yeah, best first episode so far, which for all my ambitious predictions, I still did not expect.

You need to refine your comedic tastes. Either that, or watch more Arakawa
