MAL articles roundup #3 – School Live thematic analysis

Gakkou Gurashi - 07 - Large 22Another week, another MAL posts roundup. Still working my way into things, but I’ve fallen into a comfortable rhythm of 3 episodics and one analytical post per week. Might even bump it up to 2 non-episodics per week once I get my schedule sorted out. As I write the season preview for this site, I’m sure I can use the knowledge from there to write several posts for MAL. Oh yeah, that season preview is still coming. Anyway, here’s what I wrote last week.

What Is Gakkougurashi about? – Two Interpretations of School Live

I really like Gakkou Gurashi. Its gimmick has proven to be the thing that gives it that extra depth to keep me coming back. It’s why I enjoy it more than I liked Higurashi. Both use contrast between cute moeblobs and horror, but while Higurashi might have a better plot (at the end of the day, Gakkou Gurashi is still just another zombie apocalypse story), I ultimately felt its use of moeblobs was for shock factor and little else. Meanwhile I feel Gakkou Gurashi uses the aesthetic and tone of the moeblob genre for a reason. Or two reasons, as I write about in the post. Go read it if you’re interested, but it has become one of my favourite anime this season. Unless the Fall season turns out mind-blowingly amazing (and from doing season preview research, I seriously doubt that), Gakkou Gurashi looks like a lock for my top 10 at the end of the year.

Shimoneta episode 8: I really don’t like this new girl at all. I don’t mind what she’s doing to the dynamic of SOX. That’s fine and creates interesting conflicts. It’s her fucking loli imouto shtick and the “lick my feet” thing she now has going for her. Look man, if I want to see feet licking I go to Prison School.

Durarara!!x2 Ten – Episode 8: I got very confused watching this episode. I actually took notes, that’s how confused I was. And then at the end of the episode it didn’t matter because the groups I spent the whole time keeping track of disbanded. But it was still fairly entertaining regardless. Although does this mean the stalker Ruri story is over? Maybe I should try rewatch the first season again…

Classroom☆Crisis – Episode 8: Classroom Crisis has lost me I’m afraid. This episode may have been an improvement on previous episodes and it’s the show largely back on form. But I feel like the underlying issues are too great for me to get much more enjoyment from it. Why in gods name is this set in high school? Seriously? When a show has broken my engagement, it’s basically impossible to get it back.

Are you going to review Psycho-Pass movie at some point? I would love to hear your opinion about it. I haven’t watched it yet, but I have already read about it on blogs and forums.

I don’t think watching Durarara!! again would help out a lot. I watched the original series a year before I watched the new season and I was still confused. There is just so many characters and story arcs that it’s impossible to remember them all.

I have it downloaded so yeah I’ll watch it soon. Will have to wait and see if I have something to say about it before I go promising a post on it though. I am looking forward to it though

While not as shitty as s2, it’s still fairly disposable. Disappointed with it tbh.

nah the movie was pretty decent. i mean the first season was a nine out of ten for me so i didn’t expect it to be as good, but it kept me entertained..

A fair warning for the psycho pass movie: it is ugly as sin. Horrendous eye-searing textures everywhere.

The story wasn’t half bad though.

Geez fine I will give Gakkou Gurashi a chance.

Also yeah the new Shimoneta girl seems like she will be annoying. But probably not as annoying as Anna. I’m tired of her antics, let her develop a bit.

Few notes. Burn Scar guy is Ran Izumii the Leader of the Blue Squares from the 1st season who was arrested after he kidnapped Saki and broke her legs.

Also on the two groups. Both of them still exist, their members are now just subordinate to Izaya.

Fuck man, I genuinely did not even recognise that guy. Durarara has two many characters.

There are a couple hints to him. One was Kida after seeing Blue Squares get active again he asked if Izumii was out of Prison.

There are a few other things I will point out once the story makes them clear.

Also if you remember he got that Burn Scar from Walker using the Malatov on his van.

For Gakkougurashi I think a cigar is just a cigar. It was interesting to read your interpretations though.
