Majestic Prince episode 1 – Quick, send in the ineffectual children!

[Tenzinn] Majestic Prince - 01 [720p].mkv_snapshot_06.32_[2013.04.04_23.46.13]

This is quite possibly the first time in anime history this has ever been said, but I think the CG animation is better than the 2D stuff. The CG is done by the studio Orange, who have been fighting a one-studio battle to make us believe that CG mecha can actually look good. They achieved that pretty damn well with the spider ninja robots in Code Geass Akito the Exiled, and now their flair is being sent to giant pitched space battles with Itano Circuses and everything. On the other hand, the 2D stuff is a load of Hirai-faces.

The dopey Hirai face stuff doesn’t have much of a negative impact on the show. They’re goofy and silly with their disappearing noses and side mouths and misplaced eyes, but the whole show is goofy and silly with misplaced plot points so it oddly ends up contributing to the atmosphere. The cast is huge, but the characters look different enough that you can actually tell them apart, unlike Love Live from last season where literally every character had the exact same face. You’ve reached a bad place if your character designs are being outshone by this guy.

[Tenzinn] Majestic Prince - 01 [720p].mkv_snapshot_01.36_[2013.04.04_23.44.58]Majestic Prince is goofy and silly, and thankfully knows it and plays to that strength. The dialogue between the characters is fast-paced so there’s no tedious mulling around when jokes don’t work. It’s got a great energy to it, thanks to the animation being vibrant, the pacing being so quick and the music playing up the dramatic mecha nonsense that’s going on. All this almost but not quite manages to disguise that the premise and plot is paper thin.

“Our troops are dying, we need support! Don’t we have some new hyper advanced giant robots in the fleet?”

“Yes we do commander, they just need pilots”

“Right, get the best pilots we have in them now”

“Right sir, I’ll calling school for young pilots now”

“What, why not experts? Oh fine, get the best students and this will be valuable field experience”

“Getting the worst students instead lol”

“What the hell, why would you do that? Oh god now we’re all going to die…wait, how did they do that”

“Because MECHA LOGIC!”

51It is honestly a lot of fun, but it really needs to provide us with something more than BECAUSE GIANT ROBOTS!

They just needed to make a show with a guy whose nose would make up for all anime noses. I demand a nose chart now.

I heard that the Kyoto Animation Characters Guild is filing a class-action suit to recover their stolen noses from him.

There already is a Kaiji show. Two seasons of it. That’s more than adequate nose compensation methinks.

    Just to review:

At least the characters this time have a little more variety.

2ch fakes are not accepted as evidence.

I kind of missed the faces of late 90’s sunrise shows, and whilst this deftly avoids the same face, you can really tell who the character designer is. I also like how intentionally derpy the faces are.

I think the pacing was off, and it didn’t create atmosphere too well, but the Director has done Jormungand and Katanagatari notably, so it should get better.

Oh yeh, he also directed School Days. No relevance, just wanted to mention it.

    • Posted April 5, 2013 at 1:41 am | Permalink

From what I remember, neither Jormungand nor Katanagatari were well-paced or good in the action department. Well, Katanagatari had some good action scenes, but Jormungand’s were atrocious. And the pacing in both shows was blegh.

Personally, the problem I have with Majestic Prince is that there’s nothing unique about it whatsoever. I feel Sacred Seven vibes coming from this.

This is going to be a great contrast between the SEED Destiny hirai faces

I don’t know, “Because giant robots” sounds like the best explanation for anything.

Same here which is why I’m watching more, but even BECAUSE GIANT ROBOTS runs out of appeal…eventually

I thought it was less that these were the five worst pilots and more that they were just really fuckin shitty at participating in teamwork

Normally I’d agree but somehow my feelings on this anime are different. The robots are pretty but goddamn everything else makes me sad inside.

I smell another Commander Fudo here I hope I’m not the only one. People need help and he basically responds with “Sure I’ll send you the worst 5 pilots we have and hope for the best” I mean seriously look at him he just screams commander Fudo and that he is go to throw a line like ” In space.. Love is the key to victory! Now Go Space Aquarion!” and he throws in a few lines about bananas and holes somewhere. Then they combine and use the power of love to defeat the aliens.

Also the important thing is the action looks amazing, for CG everything looks just so simply perfect for the type of battle that is going on, and just like you Scamp. GAINT MUTHA Fing! Robots I have high hopes for this one.

It was great when the commander smirked after the leader guy disobeyed his orders to retreat and destroyed the whole fleet. Up until that point he seemed rather serious but after that he did remind me of Fudo in a way, like he knew all along the group of reject kids would not only perform what was asked of them but do what nobody thought was possible. I am sure we will find out why he thought that and why he was right later on.

There’s definitely a Fudo Zen vibe going on with him, what with the scar and everything. But Fudo usually explained his actions. They were nonsense explanations, but they made sense within the world of EVOL and were hilarious to boot. I was waiting for some explanation why they brought in these kids but none ever came. The really need to start explaining themselves

It’s a throwback from the 90’s/80’s with the tried and true mecha tropes that MJP has blatantly laid out scene after scene. If you look at it from this perspective, the show isn’t all that bad although the Hirai face can be hit or miss.

I agree, but even those early mecha stuff usually tried to come up with explanations. Also those early mecha shows…well, a lot of them weren’t very good.

But let’s be honest here… could the explenation ever be anything that would’t make everyone roll their eyes and thing “Yeah right, you mean cause it’s mecha right?”.

I don’t really care, I feel like I’ve just watched 20 minutes of pure, refined fun and like any drug I want more!

It was just one single line, but they mentioned that the robots are controlled by their survival instinct. I can smell potential for storylines in this.

Otherwise known as the ‘Gurren Lagann machine core’

      • Posted April 5, 2013 at 5:36 pm | Permalink

Eh, I don’t know. Gurren Lagann was more about manliness (or a teenager’s view of that, at least), or courage maybe, this is something a bit different, I feel. Especially if they want to get any sort of message or something out of the story it will be quite different.

Also note that it means the robots are powered by them being shitty pilots ;)

  10. Posted April 5, 2013 at 2:13 pm | Permalink

I lol’d hard at that mock conversation at the end. Especially “Getting the worst students instead lol”.

Pretty well agreed all round. The bombastic energy of it really carried it for me. It really is paper thin though and god knows what interesting places they could possibly take this. In other words, once the charm wears off there won’t really be anything left there of value.
