July Roundup

The need for fansubbers is gradually dying out. Well, not quite fansubbers but the need for translators is. Something like 13/22 of the shows airing this season are being simulcast, and 4 of those remaining shows are kiddy shows nobody cares about. Most of these a region restricted and only available to North Americans, but what it means is all you need is some people to rip off these videos and the whole world get these subs. Not exactly an ideal world but at least it’s a step in the right direction. On the other end of the spectru though, is  the largest Manga-viewer site, Onemanga, being shut down with currently no viable alternative for its massive fanbase to read these manga online. Now it doesn’t affect me because I don’t read manga online but this really sent shockwaves around anime fandom.

Anywho, onto the anime list! Also no pictures until I get home because I’m stuck on mobile internet that spazzes out whenever I try to upload any.

A Grade: One of the tops of the year. Get ready for some fanboying here

A- Black Lagoon OVA: Roberta’s Trail

To think I’d almost forgotten how awesome this show is. That right number of psychotic violent characters who yet all run by their own rules and morals. This isn’t just being violent and badass because it’s cool. They all have their reasons for being as badass as they are and that’s probably the main reason I love this show (for much the same reasons I love Baccano and Hellsing). We only got one episode but it reminded me what a frightening place Roanapur is. It also had a petit maid stab a man in the crotch with a knife. That wasn’t particularly enjoyable to watch…

B Grade: Hugely entertaining stuff. Not amazing but definitely worth watching

B+ Broken Blade

While I seriously enjoyed this, I alos get the complaints. Broken Blade doesn’t break (hur hur) a whole lot of new ground. But what it does it does so very well. The world is fantastically well-designed. The mecha battles are great fun to watch. It’s like a perfect conglomeration of everything I love in my anime. So meh, screw you guys. Go my biased views go~!

B Occult Academy

The plot may be a bit of a joke but that’s not what we’re watching this for. This show is such incredible fun to watch and laugh at. Smile and his massive spanner. JK and his keytar. It really shouldn’t feel as refreshing as it does, but a pretending-to-be-plot-driven comedy series that isn’t a crappy harem and has genuine intelligent humour seem so rare.

B- Giant Killing

The show hit its peak last month with the match against the three Brazilians and TSUBAKI!!! However those episodes have left a lasting effect over the rest of the series. Now I feel much more emotionally attached to what happens to ETU. It’s no masterpiece but I’m enjoying it a hell of a lot more than when the show first started.

C Grade: It’s good enough to keep watching but it’s not that memorable

C+ Rainbow

While still a good show, I can’t help but think that it would have been better if it had ended after episode 14. Leave jail, get revenge, yada yada happy-ish ending. It would’ve made for a corny yet emotional and well constructed series. Watching the boys going about their adult lives isn’t anywhere near as engaging as them in the prison. Have to wait and see if Rainbow produces the goods with any of the upcoming arcs.

C Kurenai OVA

It’s not Kurenai. They might have the same names and roughly the same character designs, but this certainly isn’t the same Kurenai that aired in 2008. Once you get over that though, this OVA isn’t too bad. It’s quite fun to watch Murasaki fill in her summer journal and the girls getting competitive with each other. Still, I would have preferred something like the original series again.

C Highschool of the Dead

Recap in episode 4? Censorship lights down from the heaven for what was nothing more than a bit of boob grabbage? Yeah, not quite sure what was going on in that episode. Which is a shame because I was starting to warm up to this series just a bit. It’s nonsense and awfully lazy when it comes to plotting, but I was starting to get into this whole zombie apocalypse thing.

C Legend of the Legendary Heroes

Legendary Heroes has been getting a lot of praise recently for episode 3. I will admit that episode 3 was more exciting than previous episodes. However it was not due to any discernable raise in quality of storytelling or adding more depth to the characters. All it did was raise the stakes. Theoretically if this show kept raising the stakes it could be a quality series, but it won’t. It will be average for the rest of time. Face it guys, we’re all stuck watching this show because it will never be bad enough to warrant dropping.

C Nurarara

Despite Legendary Heroes being a better show than Nurarara, I get nowhere near as frustrated watching Nurarara. This is probably because, while Legedary Legend has a lot happening averagely, Nurarara has rather little happening averagely. The 4 episodes that have aired have had rather little happen in them. We’re still setting the goddam scene. I think the knowledge that I get to watch the cool ending song once the episode is over keeps me from ever dropping this.

C- Shiki

Not since Bleach have I seen a plot move so bloody slowly. It’s moving at a pace a blind three-legged tortoise would be ashamed at. It’s not strictly a bad show, but when the wacky character designs are what’s keeping me going then something’s not quite right. The payoff had better be great because I’m starting to get bored of nothing happening.

D Grade: I’ve lost interest in this anime. If it’s a D then I’ve probably dropped it

D+ Mitsudamoe

I’ve discovered there’s a limit to how low a low-brow comedy can go for me to still enjoy it. Mitsudamoe has taken it to a whole new level of low that I was never aware existed before. The whole urine sample thing was just a bit too ‘eurgh, really?’ for me and I have no doubt it shall continue to aim lower than that. How low I’m afraid it shall be up to others to report.

D Hetalia World Series

Aaaand finally my patience has gone for this series. The charm has worn off after the first season and all it really needed was a batch of poor episodes for my enthusiasm to disappear altogether for it to go straight to the dropped bin. Maybe in a year’s time I’ll rediscover the old fire and go back to it again. Heck, it will probably still be airing by then. A 4th season was just announced.

D- Ookami-san

This was always on the drop list anyway; I just gave it a second episode on the off-chance it managed to pull something worthwhile out of its magical hat. But nope, the narrator is still as annoying as ever, the humour is still non-existent and the fan-pandering still failed to do any sort of pandering I enjoyed watching. So yup, straight into the dropped bin for you. Thanks for the nice legs.

E Grade: Unlike D grades where I drop out of disinterest, E grades are dropped in Disgust.

E+ Black Rock Shooter

I guess there are people out there who enjoy watching girls do mundane things and have banal conversations that go nowhere and have no imagination whatsoever. It’s become a genre of itself by now. Which is annoying, because I would have enjoyed watching two mute girls duke it out in a post-apocalyptic, bathroom tiled world while wearing black string bikinis.

E- Bungaku Shoujo

My prediction has yet to be proved right. The anime world has yet to explode with praise for the sweetness of Bungaku Shoujo. Maybe they’re waiting for the movie? I dunno, why people would enjoy this stuff is beyond me. Then again, there are people baffled as to why someone would like Black Lagoon or Broken Blade so it’s all relative.

F Grade: Any F standard anime I would only watch 1 or 2 episodes of so god only know how an anime could last to the end of the month and still get an F but I’m sure it will happen some day

I probably should have predicted an injury there. He wasn’t going to score but he wasn’t going to look like an idiot either

How do you even remember everything you watched each month? I can barely remember what I’ve watched in a week.

Actually I do have problems remembering OVA’s. What I did this time was save them all in a folder. Although I still forgot about the last Darker than Black OVA…

Mmm about Highschool of the Dead I downloaded Tomodachi’s version and theirs didn’t have the epic censored screen in that scene. That fansub is not the fastest, but well, at least you can watch it how it should be.

I always download the legal streams (some wierd morals I have make me do that) and they were censored for whatever reason. I’ll make a point to download other subs from now on

No Darker than Black OVA? That seems a bit surprising.

hurp durp, I forgot about that. I even had something prepared to say about it and all.

Basically, the last OVA has finally convinced me that they made up DtB as they went along, much like Evangelion. I never really cared for any of the characters either. However the entire franchise kept me continuosly entertained so for that alone I’m willing to give it praise

where would Seitokai yakuindomo fall on the list? Personally I think mitsudomoe is better than it is but I could also see it about equal.

Nurarihyon is dead boring. I honestly hope the show won’t keep all his little school friends in the dark the whole time. That would be even more painful than before.

Legendary Heroes is interesting. Personally I think it has a decent shot of being good. It just needs to ripoff Berserk some more.

I dropped Seitokai after 1 ep because I hate 4-koma, but it would be D- sorta levels. At least the animation is nice

Also lol @ that line about Legedary Berserk~!

Man, I sat down to watch the second episode of Mitsudomoe as I was about to eat dinner.

Never dropped something so hard in my life.

It took me a second to figure what you meant by Nurarara, then I chuckled slightly when I understood. I dig the youkai politics and I hope they expand on that in the future, but so far what stands out the most in that show are the character designs and backgrounds. I have the biggest crush on Yuki-onna. Dem eyes, man.

Legendary Densetsu surprised me the most with how much I’ve begun to enjoy it. It feels a lot like a throwback to older fantasy shows, and I don’t know whether you picked it back up or not, but it reminds me of Scrapped Princess a touch.

You would have got the Nurarara name if this mobile internet didn’t balk at the prospect of uploading pics. I can’t put in my funny captions that nobody reads either :(

But yah, Ice girl is awesome. She doesn’t actually do much but her character design is so cool. I’d so watch a show about her and the big dude in a s’life show where they guard the lead character in school and get up to wacky hijinks and get into this odd romantic relationship with each other

Not watching S.Princess yet. Gotta get through Moribito first, which is hard when you’re watching Galactic Heroes…

Damn boring season so far, like last winter. A bunch of go-nowhere shows and half-decent OVAs. If it wasn’t for some moments in Legendary Legend and Occult Academy I’d probably only be watching Giant Killing. Might give Shiki and Break Blade a chance now that I’ve cleared my viewing schedule.

The OVA’s have surprised me. Maybe it’s just because I wasn’t paying attention to them the last few seasons but I don’t remember this many OVA’s coming out before. Makes for some interesting stuff. Remember there’s also Katanagatari ending, which I hated but certainly tries something different

Yeah, that’s just it.. the OVAs have kinda saved the season for me. Darker than Black was neat, and inspired me to rewatch Ryusei no Gemini, so at least I have something to look forward to. Also, Black Lagoon is probably impossible to screw up just by adding to it’s canon.

The others are kinda spotty, though. I expected Kurenai to suck, because the rest of it was just too good to live up to. I’m still not sure if I preferred gg’s abridged Black Rock to the full edition. And I feel Bungaku Shoujo was better read than watched.

Still, having more than one decent OVA in a single season feels rare, let alone two good ones and change.

Break Blade somehow manages to evoke the same color-between-the-lines feel of a highly generic video game adaptations without actually being a video game adaptation. That’s something.

    Current anime I’m watching:
    Highschool of the Dead
    Asobi ni Ikuyo

Yeah, I’m putting less and less stock into watching weekly eps. If something’s worth watching, I’m willing to wait for all the eps to be released to see the whole thing.

      That’s a depressing currently watching list…

I now prefer to watch my anime weekly. Marathoning is beyond me nowadays

  9. Posted August 2, 2010 at 4:45 am | Permalink

Speaking of biased views, Break Blade would have to be REALLY good for me to enjoy it, because fantasy is the one genre that consistently bores the shit out of me, with few exceptions. Even adding mecha to the mix doesn’t automatically work (see: Escaflowne, which also added a heaping dose of madness). Definitely didn’t hate Break Blade, but it’s just so damn bland and full of fantasy crap that makes me want to fall asleep.

Man. I actually liked world series. I mean like the new episode with grown up Zealand. I mean I wtf’d when I saw that clip and now I wanna see the whole episode. And who can forget prussias reaction to Hungary being a girl. I mean yes there are some pretty pointless episodes like Greece and turkey fighting over japan but it has some good moments. And there ending chibitalia and introducing other grandparents and going deeper into times past and they have germania. In my opinion its a B. But I guess you are allowed to have your opinion. Although I kind of agree on the high school of the dead . I think the writers are possibly excited when they draw it out
