I write for MAL now

_HorribleSubs__Shimoneta_-_03__480p_.mkv_snapshot_07.37_[2015.07.26_17.03.47]I sold out!

As some of you may have heard, the website MyAnimeList, the site for obsessive compulsive anime fans like myself who feel the need to track their viewing habits of all their anime, were recently bought out. With their new owners comes new plans for the site, including featured articles written by highly talented individuals such as myself. It’s in a very early phase now but expect plenty more articles in which I somehow manage to fit in references to Popee the Performer so I can inflict that wonderful abomination on some poor unsuspecting souls.

I had been wondering what to do with anime blogging for a while now. I’ve been writing for over 7 years now and this time last year I was wondering how long I still had left in me. Over the past year I realised I still absolutely loved both anime and writing about it. Returning to Code Geass certainly helped that. But it was getting more difficult to justify using up all my spare time and some not so spare time watching and writing about it. I was very seriously looking into starting a Patreon account for example, mostly being held back by not being sure what I could even offer and good old fashioned self-doubt. But then in swooped the fine people at MAL and asked me to write for them, doing largely what I already do in my spare time. So thanks MAL for being my enabler and ensuring I keep up this probably unhealthy habit for many years to come.

The Cart Driver will still be around and have new posts. For one, Inushinde and Shinmaru are here. Inushinde in particular has Gakkou Gurashi this season, which seems tailor made for him. Shinmaru will still be around too, although he’s been blogging almost as long as I have and has said he’s unsure about continuing episodic blogging and swapping to another format, at least as long as no sequels to Hunter X Hunter or Jojo’s have been announced. For me, I won’t be doing anymore currently airing episodic blogging on The Cart Driver as I’ll be doing all of that on MAL. So the latest Durarara posts will all be over there for example. I might do something similar to what I did for Code Geass though as that was a lot of fun. Monthly Roundups will continue on here, and there will be a few other bits and bobs. Season Previews for one are rather too big for a MAL post, at least the behemoth versions I write.

It’s early day yet so I haven’t decided quite how I’ll handle both my MAL writing duties and this blog. I’ll probably post every few weeks a roundup of the stuff I’ve posted to MAL. I imagine if I want to write about something a bit overly obscure I’ll post it here instead. We will see. I hope people follow me over there and read what I’m writing. I’m blogging Durarara, Classroom Crisis and Shimoneta this season (my favourite of the three from what’s aired so far this summer will probably surprise you), so if you’re interested in them go read my weekly posts once they all get up and running and I’ve caught up. Or just go watch some anime in general. This season is pretty great yo.

    Again, congrats!
I hope there is a way to follow those without the need for checking the website every day. Also, I am tempted to watch Shimoseka just to read your reviews, as I planned to drop it just like Daimidaler.
I also see some interesting looking entries by other people, so it looks even better. I really like how MAL changes, even if the anime streamed there don’t interest me and the fansub info is being removed.

I genuinely think Shimoneta is one of the best anime this season. However I also think Prison School is the best anime this season so perhaps my taste has just gotten very weird.

I have only seen the first episode of Shimoneta as of yet and my feelings are mixed. I just never found sexual humor particularly funny I think prison school in it’s ridiculousness has other features that keep it entertaining though. As for Shimoneta well parts were decent but the scenes with the “terrorist” girl when she didn’t hide her identity tended to bore me. Though I will give episode 2 a try.

Hmm watched a bit further it’s okay but nothing great imo.

Though seeing it as critic of censorship it’s a bit of an slippery slope fallacy.^^

I was worried Code Geass would be your last posts on this blog, I’m happy to see you continue writing!

MAL doesn’t seem to have a subscription feature though, or even allow comments to articles – would it be possible to post something like “hey guys, new article up on MAL” when you publish something?

    • Scamp

I’ll ask the MAL people about comments on posts. I imagine they just decided to not launch with it

Can we still be as mean to you on MAL as we are here? :(

    • Posted July 28, 2015 at 9:49 am | Permalink

We can’t comment on those MAL articles, though. Which is a big downer.
I wonder what was the owner thinking. All sort of websites allow comments nowadays. These comments do live up the websites and attract visitors.

Nooooo. :( Scamp can you please make a post on here for every MAL thing you write so we can comment? Surely if it’s just the part above the fold + a link to MAL for the rest they wouldn’t mind?

If they don’t introduce comments, I might do something like that, although maybe once per week or something like that.

    Congrats Scamp!

I’m relieved to know you’ll be posting round-ups of your MAL posts on the CartDriver. As a lurker, looking for your MAL posts through this site is most convenient!

I wish you the best and hope you revive your fake season previews to drop on the unsuspecting MAL audience…

Grats a good solution and I worried that you might stop writing over time since this blog has been getting less active.

Now I just want an rss feed for that side which only includes you since I don’t really care about the rest. I guess I could just let my webspace query the general featured rss feed, filter out anything else and create a new rss feed for my feed reader to follow. But while that isn’t hard it’s work and I’m lazy. :/ ^^

    • Scamp
      Posted July 29, 2015 at 2:45 pm | Permalink

That’s something else I need to ask about. A specific RSS feed for individual authors. Would be a useful feature for the folks who follow me from here. Could put it up on the sidebar too

    Very happy for you, pal!

To go into more detail on my activity: I’m definitely taking a break from episodic blogging for at least this season. It’s something I’ve been thinking about doing for a while now. I’ve been writing about anime weekly basically since I started watching currently airing shows almost seven years ago. That’s a long time with few breaks!

Lately, work, general life stuff, and a big feeling of burnout have combined to make me feel very much like my episodic posting only occasionally reaches a standard I can be happy with. It’s not fair to any of you or to myself to force myself to write shit just to write it. Everyone’s time is more valuable than that. That’s why I’m stepping away from episodic blogging for the time being.

That said, I still enjoy writing and don’t want to abandon the site entirely. I’ve had a few projects in the past couple of years that didn’t quite get off the ground since episodic blogging always took precedence. I’m hoping to get those going again once a few things settle down in my personal life.

Love both of you, even though I hardly ever post here but have been following for a LONG time, just let it be known that I wish you both the best in your choices.

P.S. some of the other MAL writers seem kind of awful (typical attention-grab writing), but Enzo and Scamp are their which balances out the terribad, just my honest opinion

For some reason I feel happy to read that. I’ve been having this anime watching crisis thing as well, where I need to confirm to myself that I still love anime. And I do.
I have been reading The Cart Driver almost as long as I’ve been watching anime so you quitting would have been pretty demoralizing.
But now I feel more positive. I’m just glad I can keep reading your stuff at MAL.

Hey Scamp, you’re not /selling out/, you’re /buying in/. I don’t know what that means, but I’m still glad you’ve found a way to be directly compensated for doing what you love. With any luck, I hope it’s something that can eventually support you to a significant extent.

And for the curious, blogging should actually pick up more on my end, since I’m no longer charged with the exhausting task of propping up the shaky infrastructure of an overburdened grocery store for 8 hours a day. Or at least that’ll be the case for this season, since it’s pretty good so far.

I’m glad that you took a step back and figured out what makes you happy, whatever the outcome was. It seems fitting that your dive back into Code Geass assisted in your rejuvenated love of watching and writing about anime. Code Geass is what helped kick off this beautiful mess anyway. Initially, I was worried for you that you wouldn’t feel so hot on the series after all this time. On the contrary, you enjoyed Code Geass and you even found new reasons to dig it. Not only that but your appreciation for the series really shone through in your writing. I could feel the passion and the extreme silliness in your posts. I’m glad that you figured out what feels right for you.

Congratulations! I’m looking forward to see what you come up with on MAL. :)

Scamp, is there any way we could get a notification whenever you post something new on MAL? If you post a roundup on your blog here, then I’ll check it out.

Also, could you give us an estimate/range of how much you get paid/compensated for writing for MAL? Others might be interested in pursuing a job like this. Are you paid per post or is there like a flat monthly rate? Is it enough to make a decent living? You don’t have to say, if you’re not comfortable talking about it.

humblebragger. but congrats – not sure if MAL is ready for your honest opinions on anime in general, but they NEED it. also glad to see this site will continue to operate – its the best of the bunch. i have faith that shinmaru and inushinde will keep it afloat with content all of us fans of the site need to supplement our mundane lives with. i also was very concerned (until i read the comments of this article) that there were not going to be anymore season previews – THAT would have ruined my day/month/year. has thecartdriver considered taking on another anime blogger – maybe one just for some more in-season recaps/episodic content? that would be fantastic, but either way change is good, and I’m here for the long haul – thanks guys for all the work you do.

I had considered bringing on a new writer about a year ago, but at the time I was wondering how long I’d continue blogging and didn’t want to bring someone on board a sinking ship. I’ve seen team blogs do that, desperately hiring someone when they feel their own interests wane. You should only really bring in another writer when you’re on the up and want to expand further in my opinion.

As for now, again I don’t really want to bring someone in when I’ve just announced I’m writing elsewhere. We will see, maybe in the future. It’s still something I’m open to. Just not at this time.

  29. Posted July 29, 2015 at 8:44 pm | Permalink
