Hunter x Hunter 97 – Twitch and Tell

Poor Pike. He has the same tell when he plays poker. It’s why his buddies clean him out every week. Don’t ask me why they play with their asses hanging out.

Ah, that was a nice sidestory trip. Two episodes is basically the perfect length for this diversion. I wish fights were a bit less one-sided in this arc, but I can let it slide here because Pike and Zazan both put up a decent fight. Plus, the way the Phantom Troupe prevails against their respective Chimera Ants is quite entertaining. The crazier powers like those belonging to MUMMY BOXER!! and Feitan always make me wonder what the training regimen was like for them and what the give-and-take is. (Well, we know what Feitan’s is, anyway — he has to be angry to use his power, and the damage and heat is proportional to the amount of pain that has been inflicted upon him.)

But yeah, Nen powers don’t just pop out of nowhere. The thought of all these people tinkering with their powers and figuring out how to best form them into a usable attack really fascinates me. The abilities have such a personal touch in Hunter x Hunter; they really reflect the temperament and approach of their users. You’ve got the obvious examples like Kurapika, who specifically went with the chain to trap and kill the Phantom Troupe, or Gon’s Jajanken being reflective of both his silliness and his ability to surprise people.

There’s also Kalluto, whose paper attacks and general reaction to the outcome of the battle showed a lot of character. The specific purpose of the paper fan stuff isn’t to kill as quickly as possible; rather, it’s to maim and torture the opponent in a delightful, entertaining way (to Kalluto). It’s basically what you’d expect from an assassin who is still a young’un and thus more likely to have a gleeful time with the whole murder thing rather than approach it in a businesslike manner like big bro Illumi. I also enjoy how annoyed and pissed off Kalluto gets when it’s shown how strong everyone in the Phantom Troupe is. Another amusing marker of youth. “Wait, these people are as good as/better than me? FUCK THOSE ASSHOLES.” Only a kid would be that adorably arrogant.

And then there’s this interesting bit that probably won’t be touched again for a long time because seriously it’s time to get back to the real Chimera Ant story. At first I thought Kalluto was talking about bringing Killua back home, because the proclamation is worded vaguely enough that one could think that, but when I saw the picture again while combing the episode for screenshots, I noticed the other tiny Zoldyck in the back with the face turned conveniently away from the camera. (Kind of reminds me of a certain part of Danganronpa, which I am assuming the anime has already reached. But keep those loose lips tight and sink no ships in the comments, regardless.) So there’s another Zoldyck who is god knows where doing stuff and also really young and/or tiny? Too many little killers to keep track of!

Nothing much else to say. Shizuku’s escape from the web is soooooooorta bullshit, but it leads to her vacuum vampiring Pike so I’ll allow it. That’s definitely not a nice way to go. I also think Togashi is being a bit cheeky having Feitan essentially summon the god damn sun so soon after MUMMY BOXER!! squashes a bug with Jupiter. Is it just me, or is Feitan’s armor kind of adorable for how silly it looks? It’s crazy heatproof, though, so who am I to mock it? Feitan would be the best angry astronaut. He could explore places impossible for any other human. Also, he would have to go on every mission alone.

Anyway, I’m out– what’s that, you say? You want one more screenshot of a certain character who was stripped of clothing? Well, I am not one to disappoint my loyal readers, so here you are:

Very charming.

Sadly for Feitan I don’t see him as being capable of beating a Royal guard as I am pretty sure Piotu or Youpi could kill him in one direct hit.

Still I love his power all of the troupe has pretty cool powers.
Poor Pike as well he totally could have won if he had been you know intelligent.

Yes, I suppose that’s the big downside to Feitan’s power, haha. He has to survive to deal that blow. I do wonder if it’s damage that actually has to hurt him, or if he could absorb the damage with his Nen and still pay it back.

Did Kalluto learned Nen way before Killua? He seems quite mastering it already given that the troupe wouldn’t let a weak/rookie nen user to join ’em

That is true. Killua’s temperament maybe stunted his growth as a killer a bit? He definitely enjoyed it, but his siblings seem just a bit crueler than him.

Yep. It’s stated in wiki kalluto learned nen before Killua.

In this episode, Shizuku stripped down sucked an old dude (who sprayed her with a white discharge) dry.

        Hey man that’s what happened

This was clearly some inappropriate metaphor. Probably the straw that broke the camels back that forced this anime into the shadows of lat-night tv were kids are protected from it.

I think you did a disservice to pike by not keeping the subs in http://i.imgur.com/fhpcF4r.png

As for the origin of Feitan’s powers, I can totally imagine him playing with his mecha figures on top of his trash heap, when a bigger kid comes along and breaks his toys. The childish cackle and sarcastic taunting was a nice touch.

I didn’t want anything distracting from the arachnid bunghole.

I was going to say in this post that Feitan’s outburst made me realize how powerful/charismatic Chrollo Lucifer must have been to keep a crazy bastard like Feitan in line, haha.

They played the same BGM for Feitan’s sun as they did with Bonolenov’s Jupiter but here it makes a lot less sense given that the piece they used for Jupiter is a rearrangement of Holst’s Jupiter: Bringer of Jollility. I think Mars: Bringer of War would fit okay if they wanted to keep with the Planets theme.

I heard about that earlier today! Not surprising given the content of the series, but I hope it doesn’t lead to problems for the creators. Hopefully it works out as well for them as possible.

That was cool how Phinks gave his robe to Shizuku. What a nice guy…despite how deadly and crazy they all are.

Was quite suprised to recognize “I vow to thee my country” playing as Feitan used his ‘Rising Sun’ attack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MG27BKwjaI
