Hunter x Hunter 87 – Furry Friends

Knuckle and his forthrightness were already pretty moe in the previous episode, but he gained a ton of moe points in this one. A good Hunter is well-liked by animals, indeed! He should travel everywhere with a troupe of puppies. That is, unless the Chimera Ants would eat said puppies; in that case, they should stay home.

Gon and Killua have climbed a tall cliff just to get to this point, but it’s clear there’s much more work to do since Knuckle is not fighting the two very seriously yet. At most, he’s using a bit of energy to block Gon and Killua’s attacks. There’s still no indication of what Knuckle’s Nen ability is, and I doubt he’ll use it unless it’s absolutely necessary. Knuckle seems like the type who prefers throwing down with his fists, anyway. Then, of course, there’s still Shoot waiting in the wings. He’s the wild card here; Knuckle is earnest enough to call out his opponents for a face-to-face battle, but Killua’s initial analysis of their battle situation is at least partially correct since Shoot intends on being sneaky from the looks of it.

And again, Gon and Killua are at a disadvantage due to the grueling training enforced by Biscuit. Gon and Killua could be in any sort of physical condition when they battle Chimera Ants, so it makes sense for Biscuit to train them for fighting when they’re in their worst possible state (that doesn’t include broken/lopped off limbs or whatever). It helps immensely that Knuckle is a fair-minded person. He obviously wants to go to NGL badly and fight the Chimera Ants, but he’s also willing to follow the rules of Netero’s game to the letter and give Gon and Killua as many opportunities as they desire to defeat him within the time limit. If it were up to Shoot, I’d expect he’d have Gon and Killua killed/incapacitated as quickly as possible. (This is, of course, without knowing anything about the man.)

But, hey, no way to say it will turn out exactly like that. Knuckle has a magnetic personality; he even won over someone who wants to kill him! Plus, anyone who references Ashita no Joe when he’s knocked out can’t be a bad person, right?!

Just as interesting is the all too brief look into the chaos Netero, Morel and Knov are fomenting among the Chimera Ants. For now they’re succeeding: Neferpitou is too busy playing mad scientist, Shaiapouf is off doing who knows what, and the various ant squadrons are walking around with their chests puffed out because they’re getting in on that sweet Nen action. So they’re all walking around like they own the forest, until Morel Silent Hills them with fog and Knov brings them into Cube where Netero can interrogate them and beat the shit out of them as he likes. The trio even knows that traps are up next and will likely be able to avoid them without much trouble. The real problem is when the Royal Guard finally gets tired of Ants disappearing and decides to quash the problem once and for all. Might be a while before that happens, though, as long as these dudes stay clear of the “castle” while thinning out the herd.

This makes me more curious than ever to see what Netero can do. He’s definitely not wasting his power on these scrub Ants, because fuck them, but still. Maybe he’s interrogating them by forcing them into the types of games he played with Gon and Killua on the ship way back when. Can’t you just imagine him mocking a frustrated Ant who just wants to steal a basketball from him? Poor monster.

Have some Knuckle tears to finish off this post.

Decided now is the time to post this since this episode covered the chapter that this image is the title page for: http://i.imgur.com/qYqlvEM.png?2

They actually colored that in for the anime. I just can’t find the picture right now.

That’s been my only disappointment with the show lately. We haven’t seen those two for a while.

I too miss Kurapika and Leorio, but we’ll probably be without them for longer still.

Here’s what MadHouse’s take on that image:
They’ve had these types of drawings shown sometime during each episode (since around ep 80, I think), but for the TV versions only.

Interesting to note that Knuckle’s reason for wanting to go to NGL is that he wants to stop the extermination team from killing all the ants.

Oh yes a fun fact this was the point were we learned Gyro’s past in the manga.

Gyro’s past felt like it just came out of nowhere, thank god Madhouse rearranged it so that it would flow better.

There’s a certain reason why Gyro’s past was explained then
in the manga. Though I can’t say why because it’s a spoiler.

Perhaps Knuckle likes animals a bit too much.

I think Gon and Killua outright have enough power to go Chimera Ant hunting (we saw some of that earlier) but lack experience with Nen. I mean Gon knocked Knuckle the fuck out with his Rock and that was with Knuckle using Nen to block. What they don’t have is experience in rapidly manipulating nen in a protracted battle and the stamina to maintain it for a long time. Their power is thus far has been explosive and to become more well-rounded nen users they need more experience.

Remember the Rock was not enough to bring down Pre Nen Rammot who was completely unprotected. Also note that Knuckle was kind of stupid there and did not do the smart thing of simply moving out of the way.

        Look at it this way:
It nearly killed Rammot but didn’t knock him unconscious.
It knocked Knuckle unconscious but didn’t seem to really hurt him.
So there are some inconsistencies here if you ask me.

Also I don’t think Knuckle’s pride would let him jump out of the way at that point. Regardless as Knuckle pointed out, if they wanted to Gon or Killua could have killed him or taken the tokens or w/e when he was TKO’d. So again I think Gon and Killua have the outright power but not the stamina or experience fighting a lengthy battle versus another nen user.

Yeah, basically. Gon and Killua have the raw ability, but it still needs to be refined more.

Knuckle da best. Him and Morel are my two favorite Ant arc characters, and maybe my 2 favorites for the whole series.

I love Netero having whole squads kidnapped just so he can essentially warm up for the main event, while also getting information. We don’t even know the last time he had to go all out. He’s a crazy old man and I love it.

Morel, eh? Well, looking forward to seeing more of him, then!

Togashi sure does have a knack for making well-defined, impressive characters, even if they’ve only been around for a short time. Knuckle’s a great character, and he’s only been here for two episodes. And then there’s Neferpitou who has obviously made a huge impression. O_O

Also, guys, Crunchyroll is just trolling us now regarding Pitou’s gender: http://i.imgur.com/lLYt96r.jpg

    Hey, it gets better!

Also, Knuckle… I wonder if Madhouse likes animating his face? It’s almost distracting.

He’s an expressive character, so I can see why they’d have fun with it!

Is it only me or Madhouse is correcting some pacing issues i felt back at the time i read?! Many times when i jumped from one chapter to another i always had a feeling that something was missing.
Cant wait to see their Nen powers being used on max when the battle starts.
