Hunter x Hunter 80 – Cold-Blooded

I think I read something in the past that suggests it may be possible that humans are conscious for several seconds following decapitation. Not sure they’d be this conscious, but whatever. His head was ripped off by a giant ant creature; let the man have a few seconds to soak it in.

So, um, fuck. I think we all knew things would go to shit eventually, but I’m not sure how many of us non-manga readers expected it to get this bad this quickly. Good lord! What a giddy bunch of psychopaths those Chimera Ants are, whether it’s cancerous old man moe spider or many-nippled dual wielding Creature from the Black Lagoon. I’m almost afraid to ask what the Chimera Ant Queen ate to make all those nipples happen. I wonder if they’re decorative, but I imagine they have some awful purpose like shooting acid or something. Ick.

Trigger warning: I’m going to be a huge dick immediately after the cut.

It was pretty clear something bad was going to happen right when it was revealed Pokkle and Ponzu are all lovey-dovey, but GOOD FUCKING LORD. Ponzu just hangs out with bees all day. She doesn’t deserve that treatment, man. And they also fucked up her hat! That was a pretty adorable hat, people. This is war now. This is war. But seriously lol Togashi is such an asshole, bringing back solid characters from before just to make it that much worse when he brutally murders them. If Hanzo comes back only for a Chimera Ant to rip off his dick and wear it unicorn style like some kind of sick trophy, then I will be OFFICIALLY UPSET. Then I will laugh at the image of a floppy dick dongling around on a Chimera Ant’s forehead, BUT STILL.

But yeah, the impact of that scene . . . the suddenness and simple brutality of Ponzu’s death are just . . . fuck. Hunter x Hunter: For kids! How is this still in Shonen Jump?? I guess it’s so popular that the higher-ups overlook how horrifying and violent it is. I looked up the corresponding manga page, and it’s no less upsetting! The Ant basically straight-up shoots Ponzu and goes right to eating her. Gross.

This horrifying stuff does reveal some key things, though. First off, the more powerful Chimera Ants at least have the potential to employ Nen. If you’ll recall, the whole point of the beginning of the Yorkshin Arc is that Kurapika needs to learn Nen before he can see what the secretary is forming with her energy. Old man moe spider can see Pokkle’s Nen arrow, so he must at least have the ability to wield Nen deep down. Whether he actually knows how to use it right now is another matter entirely, but the potential for Chimera Ants to use it exists. Also, Chimera Ants are powerful enough to catch Nen arrows out of the air. So that’s kinda scary.

The other major happening is the long flashback with Gyro, the kingpin of NGL. This is basically a guarantee that the Gyro Chimera Ant is going to get into some shit. This isn’t JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure where Hirohiko Araki spends a page describing a guitar because fuck you, he’s Araki and he can do shit like that. Most everything in Hunter x Hunter fits into the larger picture, so if we’re getting Gyro’s whole life story, it’s because he’s going to wreck some shit at some point. I don’t think someone that focused on spreading evil is going to become a good soldier. Gut feeling.

Anyway, have some funny faces.

Holy crap, despite having read this part in the manga (and fucking raged about it) watching it again in the anime was depply disturbing. A giant eats a human in Attack of the Titans and I’m like cool: Another one bites the dust but only HxH can make me cringe and cry.
Also i cannot believe that this show airs on a Sunday morning in Japan.

Maybe it’s because Hunter x Hunter has a more cartoony look than Titan, and it’s thus a bit more disturbing when stuff like this happens.

I liked Gon’s expressions when looking at the bee and the bloodstain + hat. For Kite and Killua, Ponzu’s death wasn’t important beyond the major implications that it held. Gon, however, met and briefly cooperated with Ponzu back during the Hunter Exam. He knew she was a generally good person and competent enough to have almost passed the exam (and she probably would have the second time around if Killua wasn’t a dick). I don’t think he’s going to try to get revenge for her specifically, but he’ll probably be a bit more pissed at the ants than if he came upon the corpse of some nameless hunter he had never met.

Also yeah I loved the funny face considering what happened right before and after it.

The scene were Ponzu was eaten, yeeesh. Even reading the manga couldn’t prepare me for that. Over there she was brain-slushied in one shot and very viscerally devoured, but that ant looked he was *ahem* taking advantage of her bodie. Equally disturbing. It’s not like killing her served some huge narrative purpose in the grand scheme of things, Togashi probably just wanted to bring back the cute girl with the cute hat just to fuck with us like that. Oh and you can blame Madhouse for the shipping thing, they added that probably because they knew what would happen to them. Sick fucks, I love it!

Haha, that’s kind of awesome. I can just imagine the Madhouse folks giggling with glee as they sucker in people who haven’t seen it before, while the manga veterans are all like, “OH COME ON, THAT’S JUST MEAN”

Also, I think her insects betrayed her to join their pseudo-insect brethren and their full insect mother. They know that humans have nothing on the Chimera Ants and detached themselves from that weakling in a hurry. They only delivered Ponzu’s message out of pity.

They’re bees, right? Bees are pretty loyal. I don’t think they would have betrayed Ponzu so easily. If they’re wasps, though, then yeah, they definitely ditched her. Wasps are assholes, never forget.

Weekly Shonen Jump is weird. HxH is still there and it seems Toagashi can do what he wants. JoJo was in WSJ all the way through Part 6 – Stone Ocean, and anyone who has read that part can agree it definitely didn’t belong in a “shonen” magazine. It all feels so far removed from what one can expect from a WSJ property, and doubly weird since HxH is airing in a sunday morning timeslot. But it seems WSJ plays it safe with most of its other titles.

Wish I could say I was surprised by these events, I read about 1/3rd of the CA arc in the manga years ago, but the art was so terrible in the scans I really don’t remember ANY of it, so I ended up pouring over the HxH Wikia so I know most of the plot points, but I must say I really like Madhouse’s execution so far.

Yeah, the whole time I’m reading JoJo I’m thinking, “How is this in a magazine for kids??” Popularity earns some leeway, I suppose.

Well that’s sad, I knew things were looking bad but I was hopeful Ponzu would meet up with Gon and company. But nope, brutally murdered and eaten. And to think that I was originally turned off a bit from this show because of the art style, thinking it would be tame.

That’s a good point about Gyro’s background. Initially I was a bit perturbed that they wasted half the episode on a guy that then is immediately killed, but you’re right that it’ll probably influence whatever ant results from it.

      Posted May 22, 2013 at 4:55 pm | Permalink

Yeah. It would just make no sense at all to spend that much time developing the backstory of a character who doesn’t even speak at all and hasn’t met the main characters.

    Called it.

I think we can all agree that Ponzu’s corpse being repeatedly shot is far more disturbing than decapitated talking head. Funny how the less graphic death leaves more of an impression. Can the manga readers tell me if there was some censorship compared to the manga regarding the blocking? If so, I think that worked toward making it even more unnerving.

That aside, there’s a lot of information in this episode. The ants can see Nen and are strong enough that they can manage without it, for now. Not only do the ants retain their personalities from when they were humans, but they also have their memories locked up inside of them!

Here’s my prediction: Gyro will be used to produce the King, who’ll want to destroy the world or something because Gyro was a nihilistic dick who wanted to ruin people’s lives. And former-adorable-child-lieutenant-I-forgot-what-his-name-was will progressively remember his past life and rebel against the Queen.

A decapitated talking head is also kind of funny in a morbid way, haha. Nothing particularly hilarious about someone being shot multiple times at point blank range.

Hm, somehow I didn’t think about what would happen if Gyro were used as the base for the Chimera Ant King. That would be interesting.

As stated earlier, Ponzu’s death was more gross in the manga version, so there was some degree of censoring I guess (you can’t get away with EVERYTHING in morning timeslot when kids are watching, who would’ve guessed?)

Poor Pokkle though, all his buddies were wiped out in fucking swoop. Ants are jerks!

I said it was “more gross”, it was more unsettling and creepy in the anime though, because, you know, it’s animated

    I’d like to be cool like everyone else and say that I called it as well;
“I haven’t read the manga, and am therefore not spoiling, but as for Ponzu and Pokkle…
I doubt that their big hats are going to protect them.

In fact, I’d wager that they’re going to be the ones who wet the ants’ appetites for Nen in the first place.” -Me, episode 78.

Though, to be fair, seems like everyone picked on up their colossal death flag at some point,
“Basically. As soon as Ponzu smiled with her head on Pokkle’s back, I detached myself from that relationship in a fuckin’ HURRY.” -Shinmaru, episode 79.

The thing is, my smug satisfaction isn’t making their deaths any easier. I mean, I knew she was going to die, but by a chump like that? Really? She could’ve at least been killed by the mafia koala or the lizard-centaur.

I think that’s what bothers me the most about Ponzu’s death. She didn’t die in a fight or anything, she got shot in the back while running away in fear for her life.

    • Shinmaru

I don’t often brag about correcting predicting events in an anime, because I’m usually so bad at it that I assume if I predicted something, then it must be obvious to everyone else.

Dying to mafia koala is definitely how I want to go out.

        Posted May 23, 2013 at 5:02 am | Permalink

You’re not that bad, at least you HAD the good sense to detach yourself when she snuggled his back. That just made me like them more, and subsequently, feel more pain when she died.

Imagine watching a scene where a murderer is definitely about to shoot someone; you know he’s gonna die, he knows he’s gonna die. Then, out of no where, a picture slips out of his pocket that has a dog on it. He explains that as a puppy, it was orphaned, so he took it in, and if the murderer does his thing, then he’s effectively going to have re-orphaned a puppy.
Then the murderer shoots him anyways.

That was somewhere along the lines of how I felt knowing that Ponzu was going to die before and after the relationship was detected.

No it’s NOT all well and good. It’s not well and good AT ALL.
They teased us with practically the. first. relationship. in the show, then both got killed by fucking chumps like those guys.

THEN they desecrated her hat. I hope that Gon wears that hat, symbolic of inheriting Ponzu’s will, for the rest of the time that he’s stomping ants.

Spoiler: The king is a nice guy who makes the ant live in harmony with humans – the end.

Anyway I barely remember the beginning of this arc I hope they get to the main part soon. But I do remember Ponzu and the guy and when it happened in the manga I was extremely annoyed.
But remember they catch their pray alive so that guy isn’t dead yet.

O god Madhouse, you really did it. I expected more censoring, but nope. GOTTA SHOW IT. Can’t wait for the coming episodes.

The Chimera Ant arc is really disturbing and I often questioned how it could be allowed in Shonen Jump. This arc wasn’t shonen anymore. It was just tragic. Togashi brings up so many themes in this arc and gives the finger to them all too. It’s fantastic. And equally scary.

You’re in for a ride, Shin. This is just the beginning.
