Hunter x Hunter 77 – Delicious, Nutritious Children

Boy, I hope none of you got too attached to these adorable kids. At least their genes will live on for now.

Already we see why so many fans call the Chimera Ant arc horrific. The Chimera Ant Queen is basically a mad scientist combining all sorts of creatures to make the most terrifying hellbeasts of our nightmares. It’s like one of Dr. Moreau’s creatures became superintelligent and decided to follow in his footsteps. That human-eagle-insect leading a squadron of giant insects to snatch humans for their queen to devour? THAT’S TERRIFYING. Tiny insects are bad enough. If I saw, like, a giant wasp flying at me I’d probably shit myself so hard that my innards would fall out.

And that’s just if it were simply a giant wasp. How about a wasp body, a cobra’s head and raptor claws?? Or . . . actually, I shouldn’t think of more, because I will frighten myself too much. But you people are welcome to terrify me with your worst insect-animal-people combinations. Bonus points for the most sadistic and artistic of you who can Photoshop your most horrifying creations. I will share them on Twitter and make my friends squirm. Don’t disappoint me!

Speaking of squirming, man, those sound effects, right? Even an action as simple as the Chimera Ant Queen craning her neck is accompanied by disgusting noises. And her children hatching from their egg sacs . . . ugh ugh ugh! Just imagine being assaulted by furious buzzing as a horde of giant insects descend upon you, and then their every gesture emits gross, slimy noises. Wouldn’t that be a terrible way to go out? At least those two poor kids above had to deal with just the one giant, terrifying insect creature. Kite and company will eventually have to deal with a horde of them. I’m guessing the body count will be quite high.

I’m trying too hard not to get too attached to Kite’s buddies, even though they seem like amiable folk. They’re pretty loyal to Kite, too; they don’t even question it when Kite says they should respect Gon and Killua. Not even a token piece of whining about how they’re just little kids. I guess they’ve seen all manner of Hunters in their journeys with Kite. Or maybe Kite is just so cool and impressive that anyone he approves of is automatically awesome in their eyes. He does have great hair, and he looks like Akagi. I would approve of anyone he chose as a friend, too. For example, Kite knows a bear man. An adorable bear man, at that. Clearly good taste in buddies.

I am curious to see how they will stand up in a fight. Kite mentioned that they were amateur hunters, but just because you’re not Official doesn’t mean that you can’t rough some things up. After all, Gon and pals were plenty tough when they first started the Hunter Exam. Then again, everything after Heavens Arena has proven that if you don’t have Nen, anything and everything will beat the shit out of you. Basically all of the non-Hunter characters with Nen abilities we have seen so far have been evil, so I’m not sure any of Kite’s disciples has superpowers. But they could surprise me, of course! They had probably better surprise me, or they will be ant food.

Just imagine what Phagogenesis would produce if the Queen ate her own soldiers…….ugh

Uh… nothing in particular? It’s just a combination of stuff she already ate before. She might produce the exact same soldier again.

I imagine that they’d get mixed up further with her other meals, making uglier monstrosities.

It would either be totally normal or even more nightmarish.

You don’t see oh wait that’s a spoiler in the op either! This arc is long and has many, many characters

Ah, at the end of the arc I will look at the OP spoilers I didn’t know were spoilers and have a good laugh. Or maybe I’ll just be sad …

I wasn’t bothered when the kids were killed by Caster’s Eldritch abominations in Fate/Zero, but for some reason I was pretty disturbed and angry when these kids died. I mean, I knew they were setting their own death flags the night before, but actually seeing them with their horror stricken faces and tears in their eyes as they get slaughtered by whatever the fuck that was, was pretty depressing. The futility of his trying to protect his little sister really got to me.
I tried watching it a second time and found it considerably less bothersome when accompanied by “CRAAAAAAAB PE-OPLE, CRAAAAAAB PE-OPLE.”

These kids set the worst death flags since Mark (Caesar’s pal)did in his few moments brief time in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.

Anyhow, it’s odd the choice Madhouse did, they skipped a scene where Gon and Killua used their nen to discover a new species (It was very cute if memory serves me correctly) in favor of spending more time with Kurt & Reina before meeting their grisly end in the maw of the voracious Ant Queen.

Oh yeah, good episode. Glad to see HxH is doing well in the ratings for once, apparently fan anticipation for this arc has seen a spike in viewership. The mainstream success this show enjoys in spite of its demented darkness is always something that’s puzzled me.

Its awesome yes, but usually unrelenting grimdark hiding under the facade of happy adventure doesn’t equal popularity, at least in Western fiction.

      • Posted May 1, 2013 at 4:49 pm | Permalink

Yeah, it’s pretty crazy that something this weird is so popular. But people can get into weird shit if it’s really well done.

      I would beg to differ.

Arachnids blown up to human size are far more frightening.

Also a squid’s sucker looks like a gaping mount filled with teeth.

And hydrothermal worms look like eldritch abominations.

And lastly we can temper all this with the creature that only gets cuter under the microscope: the Planarian.

There’s just something about the Queen that makes me find her adorable. If it weren’t for the fact that she’d try to eat me I would keep her as a pet.

    Great rev!

I’ve been enjoying reading all your reviews on my favorite series…
Always remember that the author is a TROLL..

For me the worst combination is:
Hisoka with a spider abdomen, human limbs but as many as a spider, and skin of a chameleon..
Ultimate Texture Surprise and Bungee Gum Webs anyone?

So did the Chimera Ant Queen’s mom eat a human somehow? Can this phagogenesis act rapidly like if one similar to that which attacked Killua ate a- presumably slow moving or otherwise movement impaired- person would it go from tiny ant to human sized murder beast? These were the questions I had. And is it a progression so that what is eaten before creates children with similar traits throughout the birthing cycle? If the Chimera Ant Queen ate nothing or a celery stick and tried to give birth what would happen? It seems eating even normal sized stuff results in giant creatures.

I actually had a small problem with this. Why was she so surprised when the new Chimera Ant spoke english. In order for the Queen herself to speak english a human would have had to have been eaten which I though means it is entered into the gene pool, so wouldn’t it make sense that all the Queen’s children speak english? If that’s not true how do we explain the increased size of offspring when normal sized creatures were ingested?

From what I know Chimera Ants communicate through their thoughts.

I think it’s not that they know human language per se, rather think of it as a translation of their thoughts.. Like two dogs barking at each other but in order for the audience to understand whenever its in the perspective of the dogs we hear em speak human language but to the human’s perspective their just barking.
This explains why the grunts understand the orders of the queen.

      • Taka
        Posted May 2, 2013 at 9:27 am | Permalink

But she specifically commented about that the eagle dude who hatched at the end of last episode that he could speak the language (or w/e) and I guess because of this he got to be squad leader or something.

So even though they are all speaking telepathically clearly the previous offspring lacked the ability to respond to the Chimera Ant Queen. To use a similar analogy to yours like a human telling a dog what to do. Then when the other dude came along there were now two people who could communicate to the dogs.

But all this dodges my real question which is why can’t the others “speak human”? Since they are the offspring of the Chimera Ant Queen whom is able to “speak human, presumably from birth; I assume the births don’t eliminate the traits that carried over from the Queen, and thus the grunts should also speak human.

“I guess because of this he got to be squad leader or something.”
-This. I think the queen is the one who chooses “the best” traits for her offspring and it seems that the queen only chose to give the initial grunts “the best” she deemed needed for hunting better prey. The ability to understand her commands, and brawn are all that’s needed. It’s not needed that they, 1st grunts at least, communicate to each other. While Squad Leaders need it to issue orders to those under them.

Nothing more terrifying than insects……except for human sized giant insects that munch on kiddies and breed further monstrosities! Yeah this arc is gruesome – I’m excited to see how terrifying things look drawn properly; manga art was kinda sketchy at times!
