Greed Island is available only on the original JoyStation. Ging is such a video game hipster. He won’t even re-release it on JSN — now the prices are going to stay ridiculously inflated like they are for Panzer Dragoon Saga! I suppose it’s worth it to keep the online community pure, though. Make it more mainstream and suddenly Greed Island is crawling with 12-year-old assholes straight from Xbox Live!
This was one of my favorite random episodes in the original Hunter x Hunter, mostly due to the randomness of a video game and system being a major plot point in the series, and for Killua dropping video game knowledge like mad. You’d think the Zoldyck clan wouldn’t allow Killua enough free time to immerse himself into the world of video games. Maybe he absorbed all that knowledge from Milluki. (As an aside, I love that a fat fuck otaku like Milluki is still a reasonably deadly assassin, at least by reputation. Do we ever see him in action in the manga?)
Anyway, getting back to the games, the look of the JoyStation has been subtly changed . . . looks less Super Nintendo/Super Famicom-like now. The earlier designed seemed like the best of both worlds to me: you had the name as a direct reference to what was the most popular console in the world at the time, but the colors referenced the previous generation’s most popular console. Now that’s how you design a parody video game console! Seriously, though, Ging needs to get that Greed Island shit on Steam already. Considering how the game actually works (spoiler alert: Gon and Killua eventually get their hands on a copy SORRY FOR RUINING THE STORY FOR YOU), it’s weird that it can’t be a digital release. But, again, requiring physical copies is a way to limit the number of people in the game, and also to screw over people who only get their games used from GameStop. If you ask me, that exclusive Greed Island DLC isn’t really worth it, and that’s not even bringing up the awful DRM.
One other thing I love in this episode is Killua going all Internet-savvy parent on Gon. You can’t use your Hunter Card to access the Hunternet from home; otherwise, bad people will come after you. Craig’s List is a terrible place to find copies of Greed Island, because bad people can’t wait to sell you counterfeits. Don’t go onto HunterIRC late at night, and if you do, definitely do not talk with Hisoka69 unless you have an adult with you.
Ging is riding on top of a giant dinosaur/Predator hybrid that is riding on top of something possibly related to Falkor from The Neverending Story. What a fucking boss.
This surprised me because during the original anime and the three OVAs, I don’t remember getting much of a look at Ging outside of that one picture Mito has and the flashback seen in the previous episode. Yet here we’ve got Ging flying on two crazy ass creatures because why the hell not? It’s doubly funny because he’s supposed to be an archaeologist, I think, but he’s more of an archaeologist in the Indiana Jones/Jurassic Park sense than anything else. I can’t imagine Ging carefully digging up bones unless he used said bones to fight off a pack of velociraptors. I demand to see that very scenario at some point in this anime. Make it happen, Madhouse!
I’ve got a question for those who have been paying much more attention than me: have any of the recap episodes shown up in the episode previews before? Going by episode number, it’s about time for a recap episode, but the episode preview showed Kurapika’s story, which is step one to AWESOME YORKSHIN ARC. I will get antsy if we need to wait a couple of weeks to kick start that fun business.
