Hunter x Hunter 102 – Play the Game

So very, very moe.

I would have watched this episode yesterday, except I spent the entire day watching horror movies of varying quality rather than good ol’ foreign cartoons. (I would have done this on Halloween, but I am actually working tomorrow. :() A good, likely little known movie I saw during my fun time all-day viewing: Bloody Birthday, about three kids who go around killing anything and everything, because that is what evil little kids do. This is definitely the best “evil little kids” movie I have ever seen; there’s a cheeky, irreverent tone to it that makes it more fun than expected, and the kids are well-cast and legitimately kind of creepy. Worth a watch! (Also, if you’re looking for something both awful and hilarious, the sixth Halloween movie, The Curse of Michael Myers, is H-Y-S-T-E-R-I-C-A-L.)

Anyway, enough of things that have nothing to do with Hunter x Hunter.

I believe a couple of people mentioned before that they liked Meleoron’s powers a lot and thought they were cool and interesting, and they’re definitely a game-changer when used correctly, though as Meleoron points out, they’re not so powerful that they can be used without a solid strategy in mind. It reminds me of that one member of the Ginyu Force in Dragon Ball Z whose name I’m forgetting because Vegeta kicked his ass so easily. Anyway, that guy could hold his breath and stop time, which enabled him to fuck around with shit. It would have been an immensely powerful ability had it belonged to someone other than that stout turd. Meleoron’s power is similar in that it enables him to move around in spaces he would otherwise be unable to since he is so weak — and his weakness will surely add some nice tension whenever he decides to use that power.

With the way the show’s setting this up, I can’t imagine that Meleoron will be able to use his power in combat more than once, or that he’ll actually survive after Gon does what he’s supposed to do. But I also don’t think it will be so easy as “Yeah, I’m just gonna walk up to the Chimera Ant King, charge up my God Mode Fist and punch him right in the cock.” People don’t notice Meleoron is there, but they can hit him all the same, whether on purpose of by accident. Eventually this power is going to be used, but I bet it will be in a way that Meleoron does not expect at all.

Also, I know I said he’ll likely die, but I hope he survives everything. He’s a cooler dude every time we see more of him, and anyone that loyal to Peggy can’t possibly be a bad person. PEGGY ;-; If Meleoron is slowly regaining his memories, then I imagine those others with a human base are regaining their memories as well. There are a few Chimera Ants who have been shown to have humanity in them, and it will be interesting to see who else has that humanity and who is more animalistic. I suppose Gon would be the best judge of this given how in tune with nature he is.

Meanwhile, shit is getting ready to go down soon. This scene made me laugh a bit, because it’s literally the same scene as in the preview from the previous episode but with the added second or two of footage featuring Netero focusing his powers. What a tease you are, Hunter x Hunter! But it seems as if everyone is ready to begin the planned attack on anything and everything Chimera Ant, or perhaps will be forced into it through no fault of their own. Who knows? Gon and Killua will probably be separated just a little while longer unless Broctopus magically finds Gon somehow and doesn’t get killed for trucking Killua around everywhere. That would kind of suck.

Also, the Chimera Ant King becoming a game master. Hm. If there’s anything anime has taught me about the blind, it’s that they’re 1) martial arts masters, 2) kind, sensitive souls or 3) both. Maybe this new person is here to whoop the King’s ass (though I highly doubt this), or perhaps teach the King some manners via crazy new board games. Clearly the King is going to change in some way or else the narrator wouldn’t pipe up like that. Or maybe the King will just busy himself with weird games and still be an asshole when he’s done with that. That would probably be the most human thing to do, really.

Spoiler: The King becomes a master of made-up games by conquering gungi, and defeating Chihaya in karuta (before splattering her head)

Simply him throwing a single card would start a World War.

Karuta would be so unfair. I think the king wouldn’t even need to know the cards, he could just wait till she moves and see which card she is trying to reach, and he would still be faster. (If he only does that she could try to trick him, but…)

What a person like me would do if he had perfect plan? Touch everything unnoticed. Better than being Invisible Man.

God forbid if Meruem were ever to master The Game of Life.

Also a Card Duel between him and Yugi would be quite interesting…

You mean a Go match between him and Sai from Hikaru no Go. That would be, like, two Gods battling each other at a game of omniscience.

Also, being a manga reader, I already know a bit more about how Gungi works, and I’m thinking hard about how to make it real, with actual rules. Someone needs to do that.

I also read the manga to the most recent chapters, and although I didn’t bother to remember much of the match details. Replicating the game would be really easy but I doubt most would be willing to try it out.

Not so easy, if you want to make it into an actual, working, well balanced game. You would have to make up some rules anyway, it’s not like the manga explains everything if I don’t remember bad.

Togashi drew plenty of the board game action which helps.

Just pit the King against every game master from every manga ever. Best crossovers.

Do you watch the ending theme? Because her influence on the King will be very clear if you did.

also, seems kinda counter intuitive for Meleoron to have a smoking habit while his entire plan is leaning on his lung capacity.

    And so it begins…

I think that they spoiled the shit out of the upcoming story line with the ED, but I guess it’s because I already read the manga. Prepare your anuses; it’s going to be magnificent.

Well, it’s a good thing I didn’t watch the ED, then! Though I’m not sure how much would be an obvious spoiler for me since I don’t know what happens.

On another note, I totally read this post’s title in Rui’s voice (Gatchaman Crowds).
