Highschool of the Dead episode 1

There is blood. Lots of it. And it spurts everywhere.

There are girls. Lots of them. And they spend the entire episode screaming.

There are zombies. Lots of them. And not one of them made any effort to eat brains, only arms.

There are panty-shots. Lots of them. And never once was it used as an excuse for humour.

There is drama. Lots of it. And it’s awfully cliche, but I suppose it fits.

There is Gainaxing. Lots of it. And often when the girls themselves aren’t even moving.

This is Highschool of the Dead. Do not expect substance. Expect violence and T&A. And lots of it.

I actually find it to be well within the spirit of the Romero flicks and 28 days later and other zombie flicks. The Romero movies were especially bloody for its time and had delicious and young nubile specimens of humanity torn to shreds.

Yeah, I’m totally digging it actually, even despite the panties EVERYWHERE.

You know, and I only realised this when I started watching the episode, but I’ve never actually watched a zombie apocalypse story. Sure I know all the tropes, but never actually watched one.

(although part of me is wondering why people go crazy for this while, say, Ikkitousen is panned in most places)

Start off with 28 Days Later. It’s pretty easily digestible, has modern sensibilities (as opposed to more esoteric 60s tropes, themes, and sensibilities), and I found it rather intelligently deals with some of the longer-term issues of a zombie apocalypse.

Also, if I’m not mistaken, the moment that Hisashi is turned on the rooftop features a music track that may actually have been lifted from the movie. And if not, then it’s very HEAVILY influenced by it. Here’s the trailer, and pay special attention to the music beginning @0:55:

        track here:

Compare that to the music that begins at the 18:15 minute mark in the show. Yeah, thinking on it, I’m actually getting more and more excited about this show.

Oh yeah, 28 Days Later is also one of Cillian Murphy’s breakout roles. Figure you’d like to know that as an Irishman.

Oh that reminds me, I saw the Secret of Kells at a screening in Chicago today. You should download it, ’twas excellent:

Man, I need to get some sleep. Too much booze and fireworks and BBQ ‘cuz of our independence day and all…

Watch Night of the Living Dead for basically the father of zombie themes. Or something.
It’s laughable (and so old), but you’ll see all of the cliches.

My sadist side was too busy squeeing at all the blood to be put off by all the panty shots. (It’s not like I even noticed them in the manga.)

If you must know, yes, I do love zombie apocalypse stuff. Just look at my all my books and dvd collections~

(Also, they really should rename the series. It shifts away from the high school background as the series progresses…)

Watching it now, I somehow feel that it would have alot of potential for a comedy… Mostly in the fact that they could make tops of character cameos with the zombies. I mean, come on, Haruhi Zombie! :D

lalalspam. if you think about it, skirts probably WOULD do these things given the circumstance..They’re probably realistic movements and all. The only thing that makes it jarring is that it /focuses/ on them./

L zombies. They would look EXACTLY THE SAME!!!

Or maybe a set of harem lead zombies. Their personalities wouldn’t change

Who needs substance when you have blood and zombies!? I enjoyed this inital episode a lot – but I have a weakness for zombie apocalypse stories anyway.

…I’m kinda afraid of really criticizing this anime. I mean, there is no substance and I want to criticize it for that, but then everybody says that’s exactly the point!

I predict a backlash against this series after a couple of episodes

Oh yeah, the novelty value will wear off pretty damn quick if there isnt a bit of variety in the show.

Still for the time being – Yay zombies!

Well they eat arms while pulling up skirts. Proper zombies

Well it is a zombie apocalypse and we are seeing the survivors fighting their way through, so we’ll see the standard drama, kids that fight better than any adult and um well a teacher letting their students go on an orgy among other things.

Anyway I was reading this before it even got green light for an anime adaptation, so I’m guilty of liking it. You’ll find it hard to criticize since it’s just an ordinary story, unless we get some cool explanation about why the zombie outbreak was caused. Meanwhile sit and enjoy. :)

I was kinda hoping for one of the teachers to say “I knew this day would come”, and pull out a chainsaw from behind the desk.
