Look at le France. Isn’t he le fabulous? Why, he must be the most le fabulous character in Hetalia and nobody would dare to le touch him or le harm him with any pieces of cooking equipment now, would they?
I’m pretty certain I’m missing some historical reference here. As far as starting wars go, having God come to them in a dream and telling them to attack another country is one of the more rational and believable reasons to start a war that history often cooks up. It would be a very Hetalia like thing to do to depict a terrible holy war between France and the Austria-Hungary empire as God coming down to Hungary and telling her to hit France over the head with a frying pan. You can start to predict what jokes Hetalia can make out of any period of history, which I suppose explains why there’s so much fanfiction around the series.
Hetalia fandom in general is quite the phenomenal place. The main thing I keep noticing is how there’s actually rather little in the way of cross-over fans between Hetalia and anima fans. Hetalia is a fandom by itself, many of which barely pay attention to the anime. In many ways I’m tackling Hetalia from the wrong standpoint. I look at it from the perspective of an anime and spend my time comparing it to other anime when the truth is it’s more of a web phenomenon than being related to the world of anime and manga. I mentioned this before when talking about the phenomenal amount of porn for Hetalia and Touhou, but that really is the case with this series. So not only was I an outsider for simply being a male amongst endless armies of yaoi shippers, but I’m also an outsider in that I’m not a Hetalia fan, I’m an anime fan.
Speaking of shipping, after my many trawls through these bizarre conversations of what peoples favourite pairing is (shipping is something that inherently baffles me. I root for single characters, not couples) I noticed that almost nobody bothers shipping poor old France. It’s the age old thing that the person who wants everything gets nothing. Also, I’ve been thinking of what my favourite ship would be and I think I’ve come up with the answer: Benelux! The Netherlands/Belgium/Luxembourg is a real-world political arrangement after WWII to help their economy again and was the precursor to the EU. The moe factor of Luxembourg combined with the bossy lesbian tsundere of Beligum (ok, I don’t actually know if she’s a bossy lesbian tsundere but I like to think she is) and Netherlands is too busy building dams so he lets the two of them go at it.
