Hetalia World Series episode 6

Funimation announced the other day that they are indeed giving the english dubs accents. Now I can imagine some people getting upset over this choice but for me this is a total deal-breaker. Comedies might not have great re-watch value but adding in accents, no matter how nonsensical, adds an entire new dimension to the whole thing. In fact, the more nonsensical and stereotypical the better. I don’t know how many of these accents they’ll get right. Have you ever heard someone with a different accent trying to mock your own accent? Unless they are hugely talented at mimicking accents it usually sounds terrible and nothing at all like your own accent. However, if anything, the prospect of these wildly stereotypical accents makes me even more interested in finally hearing what they sound like.

I guess the reason I’ve been talking about the prospect of seeing older episodes is because World Series isn’t really doing it for me at the moment. You would think the Opium Wars would be prime pickings for humour but I don’t think I even cracked a smile. The way it’s portrayed in Hetalia is not a whole lot different from how we’ve seen anything else portrayed in Hetalia. China has shocked expressions over the people surrounding him. France and England argue. Whoop de doop, haven’t seen that happen 20 times before in Hetalia.

I always fall into the ‘Hetalia’s charm is leaving’ mode after a poor episode or two only for it to shoot back to form again but World Series has had like, 1 good episode so far this season. I know people say that there’s loads of great strips that they’ve yet to animate but it might just be the actual concept of Hetalia has worn off for me. I feel depressed writing this. I’ve been following this show for over a year now and the idea that I might be getting bored of the thing fills me with despair. In fact, writing this post fills me with despair so I’m going to end it now.

    The idea of you dropping Hetalia fills me with dispair!

    … I laughed ;A; Espically at the end with Italy and Chibitalia

    Agree with Luffy… the thought fills me with despair too. T.T

    Yeah, World Series does seem to be slower than the first two Hetalia seasons. :/ While I did crack a smile during the Chibitalia ending (Oh Italy, you liar.), it just doesn’t have that fast feel… which I’m sorely starting to miss. DX Then I watched the first few episodes subbed by FUNi (Proxies are your best friend!), and I really noticed the difference of then and now.

    At least I can hope the next episode would be hilarious. If they don’t do Hungary or France right, I’m gonna hit something. >.<

    Agreeing with Luffy and Elysium! Your hetalia fills are really entertaining! ;A;

    Okay, the part with America trying to cure England’s fever with an hamburger is cute and funny. So is the ending with Italy and youknowwhat. Though, kinda ironic that this episode is a favorite to most of the fans including me

    .. That hamburger makes me hungry.. if only it had some bacon..

    Watching the FUNi subs made me realize how I miss that chaotic feel of the first (few/etc.) episodes.

    Aw, hang in there Scamp! I’m sure funnier episodes are coming…

    it’s weird how usually the episodes you think are boring i think of as hugely entertaining and a pick-up from before while the ones you usually find amusing i don’t even bat an eye at. oh well. i enjoyed the comeback of france and england’s bickering :D

    rofl, dubbed hetalia with accents sounds promising, i must witness this. i do hope funimation has enough common sense to hire actors with experience doing different accents or even hire actors who originally have said accents. its not implausible ‘-‘

    By the way you guys, I do understand what you’re saying about the last few episodes.. I was watching them last night and I was cracking up at the sound of Germany’s voice alone. Good times XD

    >Hungary or France right
    Hungary was all right but they toned down France.

    Yeah, World Series is not doing well so far. The Opium Wars part was mildly funny and could have potential as it progresses to the Russo-Japanese War. But even so it’s been very underwhelming this season.

    I rarely watch subs as it is, but the thought of accents in the dub of Hetalia brings back traumatic memories of accidentally seeing a bit of the Azumanga dub with Osaka’s southern US accent. *shudders*

    EDIT: rarely watch dubs is what I meant. I watch so many subs, the word ‘dub’ doesn’t even come to mind, lol.

    Actually I’ve heard that alot of people have praised Osaka’s dub as a good way of getting across Kansai-ben to Americans~

    I only watched one episode of those Funi streams (episode 8, the one where they keep capturing Italy then sending him back in a box with FUCK written on it) and yeah, the pace is much quicker. Maybe it’s just the aura of Greece hanging over World Series

    @Maya @gw_kimmy

    Then again there’s been episodes I’ve enjoyed that others haven’t (the last Swiss X Liech episode I thought was the only time non-jokey Hetalia worked and yet nearly everyone else thought it was crap).

    I also heard many people liked what they did with Osaka’s voice. My sister watched the dub and now she says all of her famous lines in that deep south accent. I watched the sub because cute/moe shows just don’t work in dub format IMO but most people seemed pretty all right with that accent choice.

    Whats wrong with four comments? Well, five now. Also yes, next episode France is godly.

    “it’s something you do with someone you like! .. So Italy.. Do you like me?”

    Episode 7… actually made me giggle. And I haven’t giggled that much since that baseball scene back in the first episode of World Series.

    And darn, they did change France’s punchline… but at least it was still amusing. XD

    When I saw this episode, my initial reaction was “What? China!? We haven’t seen you in AGES, man!!” Though, overall, as you said, this episode was really in the “meh” territory.

    [I was also happy to hear China’s version of Marukaite Chikyuu at the end of the episode, as it is one of my favorites~]
