Hetalia Axis Powers episode 44 (a bit earlier than usual for some reason)

Hetalia usually comes out on a Monday and the gg usually sub the thing Tuesday or Wednesday. However this week the episode randomly appeared on Friday, way before it was meant to be released. Why? I’ve seen people say it’s because the mobile phone download always comes earlier and someone uploaded it onto nico (the Japanese version of youtube, although most of them use the Japanese language youtube anyway so I dunno why nico still runs…). That doesn’t make the slightest bit of sense though. If this has always been the case then why did it take until episode 44 for this to happen? Why would gg decide to sub this version at episode 44? My guess behind this is that it was accidentally leaked. Similar to what happened to funimation with One Piece, they just didn’t handle their security properly. Either that or someone on the other side made quite the blunder. Heads are rolling back in Japan over this mistake. All very strange stuff it must be said.

Might as well review the episode since it’s out.

Moe moe kyun~

Yeah I just dropped a K-ON reference, how otaku am I? You know, the idea of Switzerland getting all mushy over his moe little sister Liechtenstein looks fantastic on paper. No, I’m not referring to the manga (Hetalia is a webcomic so technically wouldn’t be on paper anyway) but just that idea of itty-bitty Liechtenstein is something that makes sense in your head. And yet when it comes out on Hetalia it’s just plain dull. There’s a small, shrivelled up part inside me, the part that thought Clannad was pretty darn good, that likes these segments. However the rest of me looks at them and thinks ‘yawn, more moe nonsense. Next’.

This is such an awesome picture isn’t it? Their personalities are such polar opposites you have to wonder why these two haven’t produced that much great material thus far. Their only segment thus far was the two of them doing their post-Christmas activities in what was a hopelessly boring episode. It was especially a relief to see these two guys faces show up after the moe moe kyun segment. Heck, all Hetalia needed to do was show that above scene and I’d be happy. And yes, those weird multi-coloured cakes are the most unappetizing looking things that come out of America.

Next up was the almighty Canada, although almighty might be the wrong word do describe him. Canada may be a bit of a one-trick pony but that’s quite a fine trick he can do. Plus with every episode he appears in he tries harder to confront America about his issues, with equally disastrous results. I think I prefered Cuba’s angry bashing to chainsaw wielding America but it’s a damn close contest. The next episode preview involved moe moe kyun trapped in the rain. Now while that might not be quite as bad as seeing the holy roman empire feature in the next episode preview, it still doesn’t exactly fill me to the brim with excitement. Now if the next episode preview featured the Cuban Missile Crisis with America and Russia glaring at each other with Cuba in the middle, probably beating up Canada again, then I would be excited. The thing is, the next episode will be an even longer wait than usual. So anyone who was all delighted that Hetalia was out early now has to wait extra long for the next episode to come out. What goes up, must come down.

    Himaruya (Hetalia creator) has a fascination with the garish multicolor-frosted desserts in America. The following is one of his webcomics, and the photos of cakes at the end were apparently taken by Himaruya himself:

    Agree that the preview doesn’t exactly make one bounce up and down with anticipatory excitement, but… we’ll see what happens. ;)

    I though this ep. was going to be boring because of the Liechtenstein thing, but as soon as I saw the Canada thing I was delighted :D

    Aaaand I even made a video about it!

    D:

    Am i the only one who likes Liechtenstein? xDD

    Actually, i like the manga strips of these. Since in the anime, it feels a bit dragged and slow. And i like how Himaruya placed notes at the bottom about Liechtenstein and Swiss relationship. I dunno.. maybe it’s just me. xDDD

    The next episode will prolly be about Liech’s past and how she almost ceased to exist, which is quite nice imo (but prolly not for everyone xD).

    Hahaha.. Poor Canada. I actually like his character, but it sounds weird whenever Canada shouts.

    There are a lot of Japan&America strips in the comic. xD The other ones are funnier, so i hope Deen will show it.

    And Poland. ;__; Poland, please, Deen.

    (i guess this episode is leaked. The phone versions are actually released around Friday. And someone uploaded it in nico, but has bad quality compared to this (so, not good for subs). It was later removed. So i wonder about this. Haha.. xD)

    *raises hand* I like Liechtenstein. ^ ^

    Ah! I forgot that you were reading the webcomic/manga version, Scamp! Do you like? ;D
    Unfortunatly, some of the stuff they animate over doesn’t keep the humor…like I love the strip about Germania and GrampaRoma during New Years eve, but I don’t think that’d animate very well… ^^;

    …it sounds weird whenever Canada shouts.’ (Blindability)
    Aha, I love that. It’s like no matter how angry Matthew is, he can’t shout above his aggitated whisper. XD

    Yeah, i have to agree. Some strips are so awesome in webcomic/manga form, but it fails when it’s animated.

    Hahaha.. Poor Matt. So, no matter how angry or how hard he shouts, it won’t get louder than a whisper? hahaha xDDD

    Can’t wait to see Liechtenstein’s back story next episode. I hope they include that strip where Matt made “someone” cry, too. xD

    @Jan Suzukawa

    Heh, that’s such a weird thing to have a hang up about. Makes me wonder if Himaruya is projecting his own personality onto Japan.

    @blissfullynaive

    I saw the raw which had crappy audio but the subbed version was up to the usual standerd. It doesn’t really make sense.

    @Humanity_Cat

    I started reading them but got sidetracked by Gintama. As funny as Hetalia might be, Gintama stands far above it

    @blissfullynaive

    I think that more often then not the animated version of anything instantly becomes funnier, cooler, more action packed etc. I’m just a big anime nerd who can’t see the appeal with manga. Even trying to read some of my favourite series in manga form I just get bored and wander off to watch more Gintama

    Aye, i saw a few episodes and clips of Gintama, and i have to say that it is funny. OTL
    And i think it’s about time i’ll seriously watch it from episode one till the latest (screw school xD).

    I just heard of America’s character songs. And.. it gave me a headache. xD
    Well, in my opinion, it’s not that great compared to the other character songs (Buono Tomato is still the catchiest, next is Pub and Go, and France’s songs. Boasting about Paris is amazing hahaha.)

    Now i’m off to watch Gintama. Properly.

    This reminds me of SZS, and how i still haven’t watched the new season. *crai*

    Still, i love how informative the Hetalia webcomic is.

    I’ve never been keen on the whole Liechtenstein/Switzerland thing. I don’t know if it’s me, but… I don’t really feel like I’m a massive fan of Liechtenstein– my friend likes her on account of cuteness, hence why I wasn’t over the moon when I was watching this in the end, although you’ve got to appreciate the way Austria is classified as a “stranger.“
    America and Canada were epic though in this episode. And I’d definitely love to try some of America’s cakes…

    Nico nico… It manages to stay alive and is very popular with the Hetalia fangirls because it provides numerous videos about different pairings drawn by the Japanese fans, or maybe just Hetalia fan animations which you can download, post on youtube, and sub if you’re feeling generous.

    I’m actually OK with Switzerland and Liechtenstein(sp?) — they’re just not my favorite characters to spend a lot of time on when the eps are only five minutes long. I’d rather see Austria or Canada (like in this ep) or maybe Prussia… I do think it’s cute that it’s Romi Paku and Rie Kugimiya (Ed and Al from FMA) who do their voices (siblings once again!). ;)

    @Scamp
    I think Gintama looks good, but I hesitate to get started watching something that’s already over 100 eps. That’s a LOT of catching-up to do. ;)

    Oh! I remember that strip…that’s a good one. :D
    America’s character songs are a little…weird. Not my favorites, but okay. *shrug* I totally agree with you about the Delicious Tomato Song, though.
    I used to watch all the episodes to the present one, but I haven’t found time since.…about episode 26 of last season…maybe this break I’ll do that, since that’s about…let’s see…*40X5=200…220.…* holey shiz, over 3 hours?! Hmmm, I wonder if that’s right…^^’

    ~Scamp
    I’ve never watched Gintama so I can’t say a proper reply to that, haha. But at least you tried, right?

  11. Posted November 24, 2009 at 4:39 am | Permalink

    @blissfullynaive

    You managed to get through the second season of SZS? Didn’t the constant repeating of the same blasted joke over and over get to you? Sorry, that second season got to me in the end. Hetalia>SZS (although Gintama>Hetalia)

    @blogger

    Actually a hell of a lot of Nico is Touhou related stuff. I’ve been reading a fair bit about Touhou recently and it’s phenomonal how much of fan-related Touhou stuff is on Nico.

    @Jan Suzukawa

    Gintama is the only long-running show I watch. The only other series I watched with over 52 episodes was Monster. I like to use Gintama as a freshener between series. They tend to do little arcs of 2–5 episodes and a Gintama arc is a fantastic way to cleanse your palete, anime style.

    @Humanity_Cat

    Woah you watch every Hetalia episode over and over? God, I couldn’t imagine doing that. I don’t even re-watch my absolute favourite series unless I buy them on DVD.

    Nope.

    He even draws himself resembling him, and randomly says he’s the coolest character in the series.

    What, no, not exactly…In the summer (when there was lots on time) I would occasionally re-watch all the episodes, especially if subbing was later, but it’s not a frequent thing. ;)
    Anyways, I think I might do it for this Thanksgiving break since I have the time.…it’s kind of like a Lord of the Rings marathon but not. Haha.

    Speaking of Lord of the Rings, does anyone else like Germania because he looks like he could be in a Lord of the Rings movie? XD

    ~HeyHeyHo

    Hell yeah Estonia is the coolest character in the series! *rps Estonia*

    @blogger: i did lol so much at how Swiss drew Austria as the stranger. Hahaha..
    I dunno.. i love their interaction and relationship. xD
    It’s adorable.

    @Humanity_Cat: Whenever i recommend Hetalia to a friend and they watch it right away (after i give them the link), i somehow watch it again too. “Are you at episode 3 now?” “Yeah!” “Oohh.. tell me if something doesn’t make any sense. I’ll try to explain the Historical side..“
    xD

    @Nico nico stuff: Woah.. so there’s a lot of Touhou vids at Nico?
    I never got caught of the whole Touhou fandom, although i played one game of it (can’t remember what it was). But since that was a looong time ago, and the game i DL’ed was not translated, i kind of not played it again. Haha.. But the characters do seem interesting. Quite opposite of Hetalia since it doesn’t have that much male characters (only one, right? Plus those who are just mentioned and not really shown).

    @heyheyho: Oh, really? I didn’t know that. Hahaha.. Well, Estonia looks really cool. :3

    @Scamp: uhhh.. i love SZS. xDDD Some of my friends don’t like it. But i love it. Always will. Together with Hetalia, of course, and Baccano(and possibly with Gintama. Haha..)

    @luffyluffy: I saw the post@LJ. I DL’ed it right away. It’s AWESOME. I love the OST. <3

    @luffyluffy

    Oh yeah, you were going to write a character song post sometime soon, I almost forgot about that

    @blissfullynaive

    I’ve never played a touhou game. In fact I didn’t really understand what it was until pretty recently when I actually decided to do some research into it. It’s a really bizarre part of fandom. I remember a while back I said that Hitman Reborn inspired doujins was the most popular doujin for females. Well, for males it’s Touhou by an absolute mile.

    I liked SZS at the start but I got sick of the thing when it carried on into a second season with no real new material for jokes. But Baccano is the greatest fucking anime ever made!!!!!!

    @luffyluffy: Hi there~! :D You’ve seen the Belarus episodes already, right? I hope you get back to watching Hetalia~! Yay! <3
    Can’t wait to read your review~! :D Yay!
    Oh, and could someone review Hetalia Fantasia too? Haha.. Kidding though. But it’s the most awesome CD drama thingy of Hetalia~!!!!

    @Scamp: I remember that i was laughing at almost every SZS episode. I dunno.. i love the randomness. Haha.. And whenever i mention that, i tend to mention some of my other favorites, which is Baccano. And to mimic and agree with you, IT IS THE GREATEST F*CKING ANIME EVVVAAAARRR~!!! *spazz* Dammit, i miss it soo much. My sister was watching it a few weeks ago (finally) and i was like spazzing at her side haha. I should finish reading the novels OTL.
    Yeah, Touhou seems to have a huuuuge male fanbase. And does have a loooot of fanmade stuff (fanart, doujins, etc). I’ve been meaning to get hooked with it, but it doesn’t seem to be my calling (haha..)

    Oh, and i just have to say this to everyone: IF YOU HAVEN’T LISTENED TO HETALIA FANTASIA, GO LISTEN TO IT NAAAOOO~!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8hA2Lk4G3E&feature=related

    You know when you laugh too much that tears form in your eyes, and you cry while laughing? Yeah.. France made me laugh to tears. That man is amazing.

    (Hetalia Fantasia is a drama cd where some Hetalia characters play this online game made by Japan and America. They are apparently inside the virtual world and well.. France is funny as heck. xDDD)

    And yes, that’s official material. Himaruya even wrote the script lolololol.

    I personally thought this episode was a bit dull. not the greatest episode. Though that one picture of Japan and america did make up for a rather a lot of it. ^^

    Poor Canada. Keep on trying, my country! SOMEDAY WE SHALL RULE THE WORLD! KOLKOLKOL

    Erm, I mean, what? Evil? Canada? Nooooo…

    I demand a Cold War episode. Being the history geek I am, I could think of so much for an episode like that…I can’t even read anything about the Cold War these days without wondering where all the fanfiction has gone. Sad. Really sad.

    @Humanity_Cat

    I do have a fanboy side. It normally only comes out for ass-kicking anime though…although Horo from Spice and Wolf…

    @blissfullynaive

    If you like Baccano then I’m guessing you’ll also be looking forward to Durarara. Looks absolutely fan-bloody-tastic

    CRAPPY SUBS!!! I can’t watch that Fantasia thing with those subs. I’m pretty picky with subs

    @ksfwolfe

    Yeah there’s been an unusual lack of cold war. Himuruya tends to skirt around some of the really dodgy history but it’s kinda hard to ignore the Cold War.

    (BTW I heard some girls chatting behind me on the bus the other day and they were talking about how they never heard of the Cold War before. Bloody 20 year olds never hearing of the Cold War? Get thyself to a Hetalia naow!)

    America: Nah, you get mad so easily.
    Russia: Ahahaha..*
    America: Ahahaha..*
    *awkward laugh

    @Scamp: Yeah, i have to check that one out (as well as other series.. OTL)
    Aww.. sorry for that vid. I can’t actually find a video of that with proper-looking subs. However, there’s a translation posted at LJ. But it’s a huge wall of text, so it might not be that convenient. Hetalia Fantasia is actually quite fun. Haha.. Hetalia + RPG. I can’t get over France’s over-the-top entrance.

    And woah, those girls should definitely watch Hetalia. xDD

    @Humanity_Cat: Wow, that’s a nice fanart!!! Good find.
    Hmm.. I don’t think i want to see a country die. @__@ It seems more.. sad. Than humans, that is.
