Hetalia Axis Powers episode 2

There seems to be a thought going round that Hetalia the anime is simply for the fans of the manga. Well let me present exibit A: Scamp.  I’ve never read the manga and I bloody love this show. The other belief is that you need to be a bit of a history buff to fully understand the political satire that is taking place. So is this true?

Well….not really, but you should anyway.

While my historical knowledge of pre-WWII is pretty damn good, I’ve realised that my historical knowledge between the French revolution and WWI is severely lacking. That’s the problem with history. It’s so damn big and there keeps being more of it, you are never going to know everything that happens. That means that chibitalia will soon be lost on me as the story continues on. I’ve heard that Prussia shows up later and, frankly, I haven’t a clue about anything regarding Prussia.

Of course watching Italy being beaten up is still funny reguardles of whether you know the history behind it or not

Then there’s the WWI story which involved Italy being useless and Germany getting generally being irritated by Italy. After poking about other blogs I believe this is a take on how Italy and Germany joined up in WWI to take land off Austria-Hungary. Except Italy change sides later on in the war, which will be great to see Germany’s reaction to.

Damnit, the alliances of WWI are hard to follow! My knowledge of it simply boils down to ‘everyone was looking for an excuse to fight each other, then somebody got assassinated and everyone deemed it a worthy excuse to wage terrible war. Sure it would all be over by christmas’. I guess Hetalia is a great history lesson to fill in those parts I’ve overlooked in the past.

Italy...your greatest gift to mankind was the pizza oven. You pretty much failed from then on

The problem here is that people (which unfortunately includes myself) who’s history is a little shady around these parts risk, as this post so expertly pointed out, knowing only the Hetalised version of events. So do you need to be a history buff to enjoy Hetalia? Not really, you can still find it pretty damn funny anyway, but you have to remember that these things really did happen and involved people being slaughtered and all that. But I don’t think signing a petition to get it banned is exactly the right way to go about things
