Glasslip episode 1 – Huge cocks

Glasslip - 01 -29[2]The anime opens with a bunch of characters from every single PA Works anime for the past 6 years all the way back to True Tears standing around at a festival. Then some fireworks go off, which is clearly just as thrilling as the site of watching a screensaver of animated fireworks go off. Each character then gazes at the sky with the exact same =D facial expression. They also all let out the exact same “le gasp” exclamation of awe. While this happens the name of each character appears on screen for you to read and then forget literally the millisecond after the name disappears off screen again. This sequence lasts about one third of the episode. That is all that happens. Holy shit this anime is boring.

Glasslip - 01 -32[2]Glasslip is another PA Works slice of life show if your life happens to be that of a really boring teenager in the summer. Think of the interesting lives some people have. We could have the life of a policeman or a national news reporter or an international aid worker. Instead we decide to look at the slice of a teenagers life. Not an interesting teenager. Just a bunch of berks with giant cocks. There is something to do with glass blowing, but that was one of the parents and she appeared on screen for about 1 minute and told us nothing about the glass blowing. Literally your only unique feature and you instead decide to focus on a bunch of boring teenagers who have nothing interesting to say.

At this point I’m supposed to say “if you liked previous PA Works anime such as Hanasaku Iroha, Tari Tari, Nagi no Asakura, then you will like Glasslip” but I’m not sure if that’s the case. This has absolutely nothing to make it stand apart from their previous works. The animation sure as hell isn’t improving. If anything this is a step down from Hanasaku Iroha. The character designs are getting even less distinguishable. The writing is getting steadily worse and there’s less of that understated comedic undertone to some of the conversations. The drama is still bizarrely forced with the drama from this episode coming from a guy walking into a room after he acting like a dick over some massive cocks being eaten by pussies.

I want to like PA Works. I really do. But when it seems like they’ve spent the last half a decade on a mission to put less content and originality in each successive show they make, they certainly aren’t making it easy for me.

Wasted potential it seems. Tis a shame, PA Works.

I’m not sure there is wasted potential if they can’t be arsed to come up with anything new

That’s a good point. I only say wasted potential because they are one of the few elite students that is usually given a big enough budget to actually take liberties with the anime they create, and the a lot of studios/animators wish they had. But they insist on reproducing the same boring, cookie-cutter bullshit time and time again, with few exceptions. I generally feel the same about KyoAni and Bones (kinda), although I’m somewhat of a fanboy for the former.

I see your point. You can make any kind of anime and you keep making the same one

This was just weird first episode. The dialogue, pacing and directing all felt really odd. “Enough about the fireworks! Fireworks are pretty, I got it! Show me something else!” The forced drama didn’t help either. I really liked Hanasaku Iroha and Tari Tari but didn’t like Nagi no Asakura because the drama was really bad. This is going to be only 13 episodes long so I will probably watch it, unless the bad drama becomes too bad even for me. I just really enjoy slice of life anime.

So far it’s better than any of the other P.A. works. I like it. It’s weird. I like it’s weirdness.

“We could have the life of a policeman or a national news reporter or an international aid worker…”

What is this madness? It’s a fact of life that a person’s ability have meaningful relationships, pilot mecha, change the world, etc. starts dropping precipitously after age 17, and by age 30 people aren’t fit to be anything other than parents or mentor figures….

Unless they belong to the Joestar family. In which case they still stay pretty cool.

7 minutes. 7 fucking minutes watching fireworks!

I was always perfectly fine with PA Works. They’ve done very little that’s set my world alight (aside from their obvious black sheep), but I always found their stuff perfectly watchable. Sadly with Red Data Girl onwards they’ve been slowly increasing the size of their love-squiggle, one character at a time, while stripping back the humour and charm in equal measure. I think we’re currently on a love-octagon. Oh, and the sister has some unresolved issues with her brother. How awesome is that!

Tl;dr: this what happens when nobody buys Eccentric Family. Nice one, Japan.

You’d think that the dialogue would be more natural with Mari Okada away.

To think Mari Okada was the one thing holding these shows up

At least this isn’t like RDG that had an interesting premise but failed horribly

woah, I’m genuinely excited that this season might turn out to be a really bad one!

I’ve been telling myself that I need a break from watching more than 10 shows per season and with the kind of lineup this season has I think I’ll finally be able to do just that!

    3 dropped shows and counting!

I usually like PA Works stuff, Nagi no Asukara was great.

But this is mind numbingly boring.

Also blog Tokyo Ghoul, that shit’s worth watching.
