Future Diary episode 23

I liked this shout back to events in the very first episode. I had completely forgotten about this scene, so congrats for the clever implementation.

So let’s talk about awkward sex scenes in anime. There’s a few Manly Anime like Berserk or Kurozuka or various terribad anime like Mad Bull, where the sex is just a natural flow of the blood and violence and so on. There were a few heavily implied sex scenes like Mai Hime or Highschool of the Dead or Nodame Cantabile. There’s the how dare you suggest she would do such a deplorable thing she’s like the Virgin Mary she gets pregnant just from a saucy look Clannad sex scene. I think Legend of Black Heaven had one between a married couple. I’ve heard Kare Kano had one, but I haven’t seen that. Panty and Stocking had a lot. Paradise Kiss had what I consider one of the best sex scenes in anime for its rather straightforward, realistic approach. Itazura na Kiss had one of the most awkward sex scene of them all, only occurring after they had got married, at was depicted with flowers and sparkles and all sorts of rubbish.

Anyway, sex scenes in anime, where they actually take the scene remotely seriously, or even show it at all, is kind of rare. For good reason too, it’s incredibly awkward and difficult to depict. Just look at that nonsense Itazura na Kiss threw out. I can’t say I’m overly impressed with Future Diary’s sex scene. I’m impressed that they actually had one, but Future Diary has never been too bothered by taboos before, so that’s just an extra mark to an already existing point. They also handled the fact that they were both socially inept teenagers having sex, because teens don’t do sex so well at the best of times anyway, let alone too complete losers like Yuki and Yuno. But the sex itself was really stupidly cheesy, what with all the cuts to the moon at to the lamp. Also Yuno’s line about him being like a baby. Oh my Yuno, such a great turn-on line in bed. Or maybe that just goes to an extra point towards their awkwardness.

Well, I at least hope they used protection…wait, the world is dying in about 24 hours. Oh well, guess they’re cool then.

I’ve found it a bit weird how empty their post-apocalyptic world is. Was everyone else raptured away and the world is inhabited only by Yuki and Yuno? And yet there’s still running water and electricity to charge up their phones. Funny how that works. What else bothers me about the total lack of people is that Deus said you can’t bring people back from the dead. They just end up as dolls or something. So who is going to populate the earth after this calamity?

Also since I’m questioning everything that’s going on in Future Diary at the moment, what is Murmur’s plan anyway? Perform evil grins over an empty world? Sounds like a thrilling existence. At least Deus would have enjoyed lazing about with nobody to bother him. None of those youths from today getting one over him. But Murmur needs people she can feel superior to. I don’t know, I haven’t a clue what’s going on in Future Diary much anymore.

Nobody is going to believe me when I claim I called this. I’ve deliberately kept away from speculation in these blog posts, because it’s a bit silly when the manga already exists. I’d prefer to talk about characters and directing and so on. But fuck, this was one of my theories! That the game had happened before. It does tie everything else quite nicely together. Why there’s two Yunos. Why she knew so much stuff beforehand. What I don’t get is why Yuki was so distraught that Yuno Mark. 2 had been killed. He said it was because this was the girl who had proposed to him, but so had the other version. Yuno Mark. 1 proposed in the original world line. It really shouldn’t make a difference to you Yuki. You can hardly remember that bloody scene. You’d think the part where he just had sex would hold a bit more emotional weight to him, but I guess Yuki doesn’t exactly operate by normal logical rules.

I’ve spent most of this post whining, haven’t I? Well, this is what happens when you try poke holes in Future Diary’s logic. It’s about as strong as rice paper. Apparently there’s a few more crazier twists in store, so I’ll take stock of all this mess when it wraps up.

Watch Gantz, you’ll never be bothered by a sex scene again.

I can believe you called this on your word only, but no one’s going to believe you if you say you totally called the ending.

About the logic: I think it’s best to take Mirai Nikki as outsider art. It’s got sincere artistic ambitions but it’s also, well, from “outside” somehow, a bit off.

Knowing Future Diary, it’ll probably clarify some of your questions by the next episode. It always has that habit of making people mad over something illogical, only to turn it on its head the next week (or the Friday next week, as the anime is being moved to another timeslot).

I think that ‘Rec’ had good aproach to the sex scene (in a first episode), thats quite something for a romance anime.

That’s a good one, I’d forgotten about that. Then again, I tend to forget Rec exists most of the time anyway

The Kare Kano manga for sure has sex in it. The anime … there’s a scene that COULD be sex, but it’s super ambiguous as to how far it goes.

By the way, some people have noticed in this episode that Yuki was more confident in the first world, leading to the revelation that it was because Yuno clung to him so much in this world that his growth was extremely stunted (as Yuno’s actions were the cause for why the second world is different from the first one). What do you make of that?

True, it seems like Yuki was leading all the actions in the previous world.

How are they coming up with that theory? From those teeny tiny little clips of the previous world? Yuki barely bloody appeared

I prefer to call it a very subtle detail that actually makes sense when you think about it. And yes, it’s from those quick clips. Of the two clips that had him, (particularly the one with the Seventh pair), he seemed more confident. And when I think back to previous episodes, Yuno’s actions did instill quite a bit of cowardice in him.

It’s possible that the parallel worlds are different, Higurashi-style, but I remember that moment in Episode 3 where Yuki changed the whole game simply by opening that door, which leads me to believe that it’s not easy to change parallel worlds.

I should also add that the reason some people think this is because Yuno obviously became strong due to her experiences in the first world, but initially (as shown by second-world Yuno), she didn’t seem that strong. She seemed more like a cowardly girl who killed her parents (like Yuki was in this world), thus she would have been unable to properly protect Yuki in the same way as we’ve seen throughout the series.

I’m reading the 0079 novels and I have to admit I blushed rather badly at the scene where Sayla and Amuro get it on, despite knowing it was coming.

Shana had an implied sex scene. With Marijane or whatever her name is (too lazy to look up) and Yuuji’s friend – whom I also forgot the name of.

Well Yuno doesn’t exactly let her guard down with a little bit of sex either. Surprised you didn’t mention her drawing an axe under the sheets. You’d think Yuki would notice an axe laying on the bed when having sex – no? Maybe Yuki is more delusional than we thought.

Hah, that axe under the bed was hilarious. She had it there the whole time they were banging away

  10. Posted March 29, 2012 at 2:40 pm | Permalink

I HATE those “heavily implied” sex scenes, like the ones in Nisemonogatari, HoTD, Mai Hime, etc. Would it be so hard to show two naked people under a bedsheet, or at least put a straightforward line into a character’s mouth about them having sex? Especially with main characters, whose relationship status is supposed to be a major plot point, that we care about.

I don’t think that it’s just a waifu/ virginity fetish thing, even when it’s clear that some sort of sex happens, anime are always so damn obscure about it. (e.g. School Days had three of the sex scenes spelled out, and about a dozen vaguely implied. )

So for this reason alone, I was really glad that this one was at least straightforward about it.

I’m finally glad that probably the biggest spoiler in the entire series is finally revealed. Although if you really look at it, the OP has teased at that spoiler for the entire series with the two Yunos. Did your claim of there being two Yunos come from the OP or is it because you know everything?

I hadn’t even connected those two dots between the OP and two Yunos. That’s pretty clever

Creating artificial humans is apparently possible. So Murmur can simply replace the people of earth with her own Goetiamade humans.

What I dont get is that if Yuno already has powahs then why is the world deteriorating..
this means Yuno we all know is two years older than she should be.
    If I remember correctly..
