First Impressions: Ladies vs Butlers, Legend of Koizumi, Cobra the Animation, Chu-Bra

Looking back over my old first impressions posts, I’ve come to learn that they can be very misleading indeed. Crap will always be crap and if I’ve marked a show as being pretty terrible, it generally turns out terrible if I, for some reason or another, decided to go back to it. However when asking about mediocrity or what’s the best of the season, that’s where the lines really start to blur. If anything, I tend to be more accurate with my season previews than first impressions. So keep that in mind, these are knee-jerk reactions.

Ladies vs Butlers

The disconcerting lack of noses. That rather disturbing faceplant scene. That hair that looks like giant alien mutant croissants. Making references to the hair looking like drills while not making a single Gurren Lagann reference. A loli with which its ok to show panty flashes of because she’s really 17. The constant reuse of the same old anime tropes with nothing at all to call its own.

The whole idea of creating a school teaching people which class they belong to. The nipples that long to burst out of their fabric confines and make themselves known to the world. An ‘everything is dull’ start that was done a bizzilion times better by FLCL. Those scenes that are completely obscured by white smoky bars to make you buy the dvd.

Phew, that’s all the faults I can think of for now. In a way this episode was kind of refreshin. It’s nice to know that the anime industry is still capable of churning out crap this unwatchable. It continues to boggle my mind why anyone would watch this stuff when they could just buy real porn that actually shows proper stuff and lets those nipples out of their fabric confines. Stop watching this crap and let those nipples free!

Legend of Koizumi

I don’t get it. Koizumi is all manly and stuff and he whoops on those communist pigs. Yeehaa!!! Yeah, in the course of this 6–7 minute run there wasn’t a single thing that even made me grin on the inside. It acted like it was being funny, oh yes. Full of totally over-reacting faces and such. It never was funny though.

No seriously, if you think this is great historical parody then I command you to drop everything and go watch the infinitely superior and actually funny Hetalia. Legend of Koizumi is crap.

Cobra the Animation

Anyone remember that show Princess Lover from last summer? It had god-awful plotting, the most horrible animation and was steeped in all sorts of things that you would associate with a crap anime. Yet, despite everything, the show wasn’t terrible, thanks to whoever the genius was who wrote the script. That man was an absolute master at his trade and wasted on a show like Princess Lover.

Something slightly similar has happened in Cobra. The animation is godawful, which shocked me originally because I thought it was done by Madhouse (actually it’s done by Magic Bus, whoever the hell they are). Those women must be slightly chilly in their older-women version of Strike witches outfits. But this show has the character of Cobra, who I just couldn’t help loving.

His explanation for his wounds healing quickly was that he eats two bowls of cornflakes everyday. Now there’s a man I can connect with! He reminds me of Johnny Bravo more than anything and he’s wasted in this otherwise disastrous anime. I never ended up finishing Princess Lover so I dare say I won’t finish this anime either, but for now I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt.

Chu-Bra

Who exactly is this show aimed at? Let me explain. This is an unusual mix between drowning in panty-flashes and a tale of growing pains for teenage girls. In fact it’s a perfect mix between the two. In that sense I can’t work out if it’s meant to be aimed at paedophiles or pre-teen girls. In fact I’m almost swing towards the latter.

Now since I’ve never been a pre-teen girl myself (never thought I’d have to say that) I can’t say I know the growing pains they experience. Maybe there is actually a lot for these young women to relate to in this show such as the worrying thoughts of transferring to adult underwear and feeling both disgusted and jealous at girls who already have. If this wasn’t anime I’d be certain that this was an educational show.

It’s not actually a terrible show. But it’s certainly not watchable. I guess you either have to be a paedophile, a pre-teen girl or someone who has suddenly decided that their career path shall be in underwear design to actually watch this show. Everyone else, there’s nothing to see here. It’s not bad enough to be worth your time.

In accordance to tradition, the crappier anime air early on so everybody can instantly claim this season is terrible and ignore the good stuff that starts appearing on the 7th and 8th.

    gotta say I had similar thoughts about Legend of Koizumi… Hetalia WAY better. but Koizumi did make me laugh still.

    giant alien mutant croissants” LOL!!!

    I haven’t seen the other 2 yet but chu-bra will be soon and i can easily say i’m not overly looking forward to it

    I think Koizumi is looking to offend as many people’s political sensibilities as possible, and that’s why I enjoyed it as much as I did even if it’s unwarranted. Clearly, Japan > all, so now I feel compelled to give my daily dose of nippon nippon banzaiiiiiiiii~

    Actually, I think I may have to check out Chu-Bra!, once being a preteen girl…

    …and I have to see how bad it really is.

    Definitely going to watch the first ep of Ladies vs Butlers tonight, just to see the horror for myself, hehe.

    Legend of Koizumi wasn’t Hetalia, but I still loved it. Though it helps that I’m someone who’s been following Japanese politics for several years now. Koizumi was never really that GAR, but I loved how Rozen Aso was depicted as the gruff, rifle carrying sidekick. I just hope that they have Ichiro “The Destroyer” Ozawa in the show somewhere. Mickey Mouse ears as a reference to Kim Jong Il’s son was a nice touch too (he went to Japan’s Disney Land theme park, which may or may not have been on some sort of not-legit visa.)

    Had no idea what Cobra was, other than a remake of some pretty old anime, but I’ll have to check it out now after reading your description of it.

    Eh, I’m going to try a different approach and respond to what people are saying rather than the people themselves

    @Chu-bra

    It’s not worth watching it to see how terrible it is. No really, it is no way near bad enough. Watch Ladies vs Butlers for that sadist inside you.

    @Koizumi

    I guess not knowing anything about Japanese politics doesn’t help. My idea of Aso was of him wearing a lolita goth outfit, not a rifle wielding badass. As for nippon banzai, I saw screw that. ALL HAIL BRITANNIA!!!

    Did you ever see Kanokon? LvB is exactly like that. You could call it “Kanokon 2: The Unnecessary Sequel” and no one would be the wiser. Mind you, Kanokon was the #1 anime for young Japanese kids demographic when it aired, which I’m sure is the same audience LvB is aiming for, so there’s more Oh Japan! for ya.

    Heh, good start to the year, eh? Hopefully, the best is saved for last.

    Looks like the Winter lineup is not as promising as what I hoped it would be. I’ll be waiting for the rest and give my thumbs up/down about it. >.>

    @kadian1364

    Normally I avoid 2–3 shows per season that get terrible reviews and Kanokon was one of them. I decided to give everything a shot this season because 1) I missed out on the flying panties show last season 2) there’s not much airing this season anyway and 3)to make fun of them

    @RP and jusuchin85

    I’ve noticed that the crap stuff often airs towards the start of the season with the exception of maybe one early good show, which this season appears to be Sora no woto. As I said, the good stuff starts on the 7th
