Fantasy Anime League – Reeling from the early blows

the horror

Aku no Hana has committed a crime this season. This crime, however, is not the malfeasance that springs to mind first for most of you. No, this is a much more sinister wrongdoing. What has this seemingly benevolent cartoon done? Why, it’s fucked up this whole FAL season, that’s what! Well, it’s more like this crazy business with Aku no Hana has made more clear what a farce fantasy anything is. Even with a seemingly level playing field, you need some good luck to have a prayer of winning. Anyone who didn’t have Aku no Hana on their team is basically fucked. Who would have thought that before the season began? Anime!

It probably goes without saying that we are all losers.

Scamp – 51st

aku_no_hana-01-kojima-smile-laughing-perverted_best_friend-art-animation

I’m not overly displeased with how I’ve done so far. My current relatively low placing is down to Aku no Hana’s ridiculous forum post count, which won’t carry it much further so not having it won’t hurt me in the long run. I’ve got the big hitter in Titan, which was obvious. Nabbing Gargantia was relatively obvious too. Oregairu LONG NAME has been doing well enough, but getting Demon King has been my real trick. It wasn’t a popular choice pre-season at all, so having that will be key to my success.

The killer has been Devil Survivor 2. I didn’t think that would be good pre-season, and indeed it’s not a good anime, but apparently MAL is full of Shin Megami Tensei fans? I’m desperately hoping it will fall off in popularity and one of my benched titles in Henneko or Valvrave take off, because I need to get Karneval off my team. If that happens, and Railgun flounders like I’m banking on it doing, then my placing will steadily climb up. I think my chances of coming first are scuttered without that Aku no Hana boost and no Devil Survivor, but beating Shinmaru and you other Cart Driver commenters is what’s important to me.

Shinmaru – 62nd

To think I could have been first place for a week had I used my ace during Week 1. That would have brought me a brief, glorious flight toward the sun before Week 2 made me crash like Icarus. Sigh. I thought Aku no Hana too strange to find a large enough audience to make a difference in FAL; never did I think that wouldn’t even matter. I can barely even talk strategy regarding my own picks, because that blindsided me so much. Good lord.

My other problem is obvious: Picking Date A Live over Gargantia hasn’t panned out at alll. Where are all the pantsu fans at?! Thanks for not turning out in greater numbers. Devil Survivor 2 doing well hurts a bit, too, since that was my final cut. Persona 4’s numbers didn’t seem particularly crazy to me, but I guess people will turn out for Atlus! Karneval has turned out to be a dud, too. I want to place my faith in you so much, fujoshi! Why do you spurn me so? If you suddenly double Karneval’s numbers when Scamp has kicked it off his team, though, then all will be forgiven. Not really sure which among Hentai Ouji or Railgun S I’ll promote first. Or maybe I just don’t feel like tipping my hand, because I’ve become grumpy all of a sudden. Harumph!

Anyway, please watch the shows I have on my team and ignore all of Scamp’s smelly anime.

Who would’ve thought that picking a roster full of sequels of dubious quality would end with me being in second to last place? Well I would have, considering that every other one of MAL’s darlings of the season aren’t sequels, but it’s still kind of surprising that I managed to both get nearly dead last (one of my potential ideas for FAL) while doing the sequel gimmick list. Unfortunately, short of choosing those 3-5 minute abominations, I don’t think there’s a way my roster could sink lower in the rankings– something that I’m more saddened by than I should be.

Pretty much the only way I could climb up the ladder now is if everybody working on Devil Survivor 2, Shingeki no Kyojin, Gargantia, and Demon King suddenly died, or if MAL actually gets some taste for once and collectively decides to watch Hayate no Gotoku Cuties while dropping Shingeki no Kyojin. I don’t think asking for the impossible is asking for much, so get on it to save my roster, MAL.

We’ll be keeping track of the Cart Driver commenters table too to give you lot an extra incentive to do well and compete. Leave a comment if you want in as well since I don’t know all your MAL usernames. Don’t worry about this public shaming because, at the very least, you’ll all beat Inushinde.

Last FAL’s shoujo power encouraged me to pick Karneval and Uta no Prince-sama (benched), but they aren’t hitting at all. Valverave is no good aswell.
I hope Scamp is not right and Railgun will get some good scores. I need it to replace Karneval.

All in all this FAL has been really unpredictable.

Just how bad a start can I get… I have Aku no Hana and STILL ended up on 65. Although the point differences are still relatively low… if only I hadn’t benched DS2. I kicked Aku no Hana for it this week.

And can I gloat about Karneval? Can I? Caaaaaaaaaaaaan I? I totally called that.

…although I was also expecting the fujoshi boost to go to Valvavre. Thank god I have that benched.

I was wooed by the pretty boys and people saying the manga was good for Karneval. Then again that’s what made me pick Magi last time and that did…well, it did all right but not as well as I was hoping

  4. Posted April 17, 2013 at 9:33 am | Permalink

Considering I have no clue what I’m doing, I’m fairly happy with how things are going XD

I’ve booted Karneval off the active team in favour of taking Gargantia off the bench – hopefully that will be a good move. Surprised Karneval hasn’t done better given the slim pickings for multi-coloured bishie fluff – maybe it will improve? (although we all know UtaPri is just the best thing ever created for multi-coloured bishie fluff – even if MAL doesn’t reflect that)

Slightly kicking myself for not picking Aku no Hana though, but who could have predicted that shitstorm really? And I am also massively surprised at how popular Devil Survivor is since it looks pretty dull.

    • Scamp
      Posted April 17, 2013 at 7:16 pm | Permalink

No it’s not multicoloured bishies that MAL likes this time around. With the top 3 being Titan, Gargantia and Titan, maybe the most popular titles are…the…actually good ones? MAL….choosing to watch the best anime? No, say it aint so!

But it’s not Persona! It doesn’t even have Shin Megami Tensei in the title! Goddamnit SMT!

      • Posted April 17, 2013 at 7:41 pm | Permalink

As a semi-hardcore SMT fan myself, don’t think for a moment that just because SMT isn’t in the title doesn’t mean we won’t pay attention to it. Especially since America does put SMT on the title of every game that features a Jack Frost here. It’s true Persona is the most popular part of the franchise, but the Devil Survivor one comes at a close second due to its anime-esque nature. And it’s also the reason why I doubt we’re ever getting an anime adaptation of Digital Devil Saga, despite that being the most perfect choice to adapt due to its streamlined story, b/c it’s pretty underground by comparison.

Now personally, I should have put DS2 on my FAL, but I hesitated b/c P4’s stats on MAL weren’t high and that’s the most popular SMT title at the moment. I know it sold well in Japan, but that’s not related to FAL at all. However, as an SMT fan, I do see why people would watch it considering I’m among them. The combination of post-apocalyptic world + Digimon + lack of jarring shifts in tone like P4’s anime + better production than P4’s anime + seeing our faves from the game animated + curiosity to see how anime of game turns out + large fan base = We Will WATCH!

tl;dr Competent production of popular game we’re already familiar with + large fan base = high watch on MAL

I don’t expect to keep my high ranking in the long run. I didn’t pick any of the heavy hitters like Devil Survivor 2 or Maou-sama, and I need to wait a few weeks before I swap in Gargantia. All I can hope for is that Aku no Hana gets more massive forum posts for the next two weeks. Goddamn Karneval and Date A Live. You let me down sons!

There was no way to guess what Aku no Hana would do since there was no promo material to go off of. Luck is typically a factor in fantasy games, but FAL gives players limited ability to adjust and recover. But I am kicking myself for one mistake; If I had done just a little more research, just reading a manga chapter or two, I know I would’ve added Maou-sama to my roster instead of Date A Live or Henneko, which would’ve given me one of the strongest teams going forward.

Of the teams The Cart Driver deigns fit to list, fathomlessblue, 5camp, and myself seem to be in the best position for a high finish.

I’m going to recommend to the FAL group to allow all sequels going forward. Right now, OreImo would be 8th in overall points if it were eligible. Barring something insane getting a sequel like Code Geass or Cowboy Bebop, the draw of viewership to the shiny and new is way too massive for even popular sequels to retain a clear advantage. I have other ideas to suggest to FAL, but we’ll see how it goes.

    • Scamp
      Posted April 17, 2013 at 7:22 pm | Permalink

Hey just because something is ‘good’ doesn’t mean it will do well. See Jojo and Girls und Panzer from last season. Besides, I still expect Henneko to make up ground pretty quickly

The two times they were right to ban sequels were Fate/Zero (extremely popular and only 3 month gap) and FMA Brotherhood (which is practically Geass/Bebop levels popularity). Actually on that note, I wonder how well a Bebop sequel would do on FAL? Remember how crap Eureka Seven Ao did? That would be super interesting to see.

Also man, another Bebop thing would be pretty awesome

    *Puts on my gloating shades*

I guess there are two parts to my current high score. The first was realising Gargantia would air late on Sunday night, near FAL’s weekly cut-off, so probably wouldn’t score highly in the first week’s results. The second was bargaining on some hype & controversy with Aku no Hana, both with the ardent manga fanbase, & the types of otaku who recoil at the level of self-refection it brings. The sedate pacing meant that didn’t quite happen, but the rumoured experimental art style took the slack & then some! Everyone was unprepared for that, although in hindsight it seems rather obvious considering what MAL fans tend to be like.

So yeah, cheers MAL. Your obsessive decent into madness over protecting the perceived ‘purity’ of Aku no Hana’s (and the anime medium as a whole) art, in a manner that in no way mirrors the themes of the actual story *cough*, has given me a massive boost. I’m basically Madoka right now, drinking up all the manga purists & moe fanboy rage, & turning it into something positive. Feel free to stick with that image a while. ^^

Unfortunately my placing won’t remain as high for much longer. The Aku no Hana controversy has begun to die down, & the lack of Devil Survivor 2 is going to be a problem from here on out. Also, as my bench now consists of Karneval & Hentai Prince, I don’t really have any meaningful backups. Still, I should hopefully be in the top 20 by the season’s end.

See, I thought Aku no Hana’s weirdness would just mean MAL wouldn’t watch it. Stuff like Tatami Galaxy and Trapeze are woefully underwatched there. And yes, I suppose Aku no Hana is underwatched…

That is a very naive way of thinking Scamp. People love seeing/buying what they hate.

Just take EA games as an example. They always rant about them, plan to boicott them, but they are also the first to pre-order it. Hypocrite shit eaters! as Nakamura would say.

I knew that whether it was a hit or was it a fail. Aku no Hana would gain a large audience, if mostly that audience is to rant about how bad it is in comparison to the manga. It’s basic human knowledge…

    Lessons learned:

    1. check the airing schedules. putting henneko on my active team on the first week was not a good idea.

    2. don’t dismiss a series just because it reminds you of a crappy show you once watched and never liked. I immediately dismissed maou sama because it reminded me too much of working!! which i never liked.

    3. just because it has promo art featuring girls in various poses and/or different stages of undress, doesn’t mean it will draw the attention of everyone (photokano/date a live comes to mind)

    4. just because it has “hentai” in its title doesn’t mean it will be good/talked about.

    5. check the genre. for some reason I thought DeSu2 was a mecha anime, and since I already have gargantia in my team, i didn’t include it.

    6. Scamp’s comments on the season previews are correct most of the time.

    7. I need to learn all those things about wildcards, aces and nukes.

I’m still disappointed that I didn’t include DeSu2 and Maou-sama on my team. oh well, my goal now is to get out of 101th place and finish at 75th place at the very least.

from what I’ve read of joinedforFAL’s posts on the club page I think those with aku no hana will suffer once they count how many people marks the series as dropped. as was said before, discussion about it will die down from week 2 onward.

also, I’ll join every FAL from here on out.

    • Scamp
      Posted April 17, 2013 at 7:30 pm | Permalink

The airing date thing is a mistake almost everyone makes on their first FAL, myself included. Usually it’s for the Noitamina shows.

Oddly, the pure pervy stuff like Photo Kano don’t usually do that well on FAL. Some of the borderline perv stuff can, but not Queens Blade esque stuff. I’m surprised Date A Live is doing as well as it is anyway, and even that I think is down to it airing so early. Also don’t dismiss Henneko yet. As I already said in these comments, I think it will slowly creep up.

And yes, I am usually right in my season previews. Tell that to all those people who keep shoving my Guilty Crown prediction in my face >:(

It was justified this time. Who could have expected that none of the promo BDs would be leaked before the TV air date?

DAL had a bit of a fan-following from the VN (or dating sim, or whatever), that boosted it slightly. It’s doing pretty much as I expected (boo that I can’t kick it out anymore, unless I want Valvavre or Aku no Hana).

I’m surprised I’m on the list since my MAL name is vastly different to Fumoffu!! How? Anyway, personally after week 1 my only aim is to beat Scamp. I picked Devil Survivor, so that’s good, and if Railgun does better than Stone cat, then I stand a strong chance.

Nope, Henneko already doing better than Railgun, and Railgun isn’t going to grow due to the big barrier to entry. Also Devil Survivor seems to be very slowly falling down the rankings, so hopefully I’ll get on top before the end?

The latest episode of Devil Survivor 2 killed off one its main characters (not bothering to spoiler tag this as I doubt many of you guys are watching the show, though I won’t say who), which if Madoka or Another is anything to go by, is the equivalent of MAL going nuts and saying “Must Watch Further since shit is getting serious”. It’s certainly got me hooked at the very least. So…yeah don’t count on DS2 falling anytime soon.

Ah Scamp, it’s got more viewers, but I’m trying to learn from past mistakes here, and I’m banking on the increased comment count on Railgun to make up the difference, you see it doesn’t even beat Karneval (TV) that I subbed it in for in terms of viewers, hence why it’s such a big gamble. Judging from the first episode discussion posts though, I think I’ve made the right choice.

Your only hope is Hataraku Maou-sama!, something I intensely regret not having on my list, if I had it instead of Karneval, I’d be in a good position by now.

I almost put Aku no Hana on my team because I thought, from what I knew of the manga, that it’d be odd enough to cause an initial spike in viewers or discussion. But no, I had to make room for Karneval because the fujoshi would show their strength just like last FAL. Flawless strategy! Urgh. It’s more of a recovery effort at this point. At least I got Karneval out and brought Yahari in. Now to hope the right time to swap Date a Live out for that Stony Cat show is right when my next swap opens up. But no mater what I do, mine is not the makings of a wining team.

    NOOOOOOOO!

On the bright side, my decision to swap in Devil Survivor for the Data Processing Club was a good one.

Unlike, all the Cart Driver folk, I actually went up in ranking! HORAH!

Aside from having Data Processing on my bench, my biggest mistake was having 3 active series that aired late….yeah, I am not doing that again.

Now that I have seen a few episodes, I must confess that Love Come really should have been a must select along with Maou-Sama…

I hope Scamp is wrong about Index and it actually ends up doing well.

I will never be able to get a good rank though because like everyone else I placed my bets on Karneval and the bishie loving populace, but it tanked and I have nothing to replace it with. (Photo Kano is my other bench and that sucks)

I know the bottom is a dark and lonely place, but I will be hoping that I can ditch Inushinde far, far behind. I am sorry Inushinde. I hope you don’t take it personally.

Oh and thanks for the list. It’s nice of you guys to do that.

There’s always a widely picked show that ends up doing crap. Last time around in was Robotics;Notes. The trick is to make sure your bench makes up for that dud.

I’m currently rank 35, surprising considering my team consist of the top 5 anime with the most views this season. Guess I underestimated the interest in Aku no Hana. Devil survivor was an seemed an obvious choice from looking at the trailer and premise, Hataraku, Gargantia, Oregairu were all lucky picks and Shingeki was the obvious pick, so hopefully I still have a shot at the top 3 in the upcoming weeks.

Curse you and your predictive abilities. I’ve got to bank on Valvrave and Henneko charging up the ranks a bit, but I guess I’m doomed to only a decent ranking this time around

Ahaha you guys are the reason I became cognizant of FAL

Sad face that Valvrave will probably flop faster than you can say Vampire, and I’m regretting not benching Henneko or Railgun instead. Good call on Maou-sama tho! Owe that one to you Scamp

You should start your own consulting services instead of participating in FAL. Make everyone participate under the banner of #teamcartdriverminions, group nuke people, etc.

All we need is a bookie on MAL and you are set scamp.

just don’t pull any more Guilty Crowns or else you may wake up next to a dead horse Godfather style.

I am kinda tempted to start a betting ring pot or something, to add that extra incentive

anyone else making spreadsheets to track data and continously updating it every few hours? if not cause i am that hooked on playing this, my own goal is to win in my bracket shared by stark700 and Pietel, things were looking on the ball until this morning pietel swapped into the same active teams as me securing a 5000 point gap, but i’ll have a chance to catch back up with a 5th week swap while he has a 6th week at the earliest.

oh and maybe beating flawfinder for giggles.( only cause i’m jelly) a whole new world has opened up now that i frequent animeblog sites and listen to all the podcasts i can find. almost spurs me to think i can delude myself into trying it too. so Fantasy league is a good starter.

Ngl I’m running a matlab dataset to calculate this stuff for shits and giggles

Share your findings with us when it’s over if you’d be so kind. That stuff is super interesting even outside of FAL. I remember…fall 08 I think? Someone shared their FAL data and it showed 07 Ghost started with a really good score but then slowly dropped throughout the season to below-average, while Pandora Hearts started with a crap score but steadily rose until it went well above 8.0.

sounds good, of the new social medium, twitter is the one I’m least adverse to. the winner for most adverse reaction would be facebook.

I just looked at the details and

WTF! Swaps now apply the week they are made! I LOST the Aku no Hana points because I swapped it out because I thought swaps made in Week 2 take effect in Week 3!

…I’m packing my toys and going home. This is a stupid game anyway.

I honestly don’t know how things could turn out concerning Devil Survivor 2 despite owning the game. Since the adaptation is doing a lot of things differently. Even the P4 anime was closer to the game than DeSu 2.

But I personally think you guys weren’t wrong for not choosing it. Even with them doing something unexpected like they did in episode 3.

I’m so mad, I used my first swap after the first week to get Uta no Prince-sama off of my team, and now Aku no Hana is stuck on my bench! Now I have to watch my rank fall lower and lower until week 5, hopefully I won’t be too far gone to recover by then…
