Fantasy Anime League – Go on, do your worst

vlcsnap-2014-01-02-23h19m47s96It’s over. We writers foolishly challenged the readers to a little game. To best us (or worst us in Inushinde’s case) at the Fantasy Anime League. Such was our confidence we said that the person who beats us to our intended goals could choose what we episodically cover for the winter anime season. And it’s over, with MAL’s legendarily crap taste sending Strike the Blood to be the fourth highest rated show while Samurai Flamenco and Kyosogiga hovered around mid-table. Let’s see how it all finished for us…

Scamp – 95th

vlcsnap-2014-01-02-23h19m51s158That could have gone much, much worse. At 95th I’m still inside the top 100 and within the top 30%. If this was the Premier League I wouldn’t have achieved Champions League but I would have gotten into the Europa League. I am the Everton or Spurs of FAL (or maybe the Man United OHSNAP soccer jokes none of you nerds are going to get that are you). And as I said, it could have gone so much worse. At the last minute when choosing my team, I opted to choose Log Horizon, the top points scorer in the end, and drop Pupa which didn’t even end up airing. Sequels doing as well as they did rather shocked me. I don’t think Magi did that well in the season it originally aired, which happened to be the time I chose it. I think you can put that down to a few rule changes such as increased emphasis on points and dropped which help sequels. Plus it also helped that the two top scoring anime weren’t eligible this season. If I’ve learned anything from this FAL, it’s that take into account rule changes each season. Nothing is guaranteed in FAL. Except for MALs crap taste. You can always rely on that.

Shinmaru – 23rd

vlcsnap-2014-01-02-23h19m56s197The final weeks were uneventful for my team, since the continued, embarrassing downfall of Coppelion combined with Galilei Donna being a nonentity left me with no moves to pull after using my booster and swapping in Machine Doll a while back. So basically I had nothing to do other than watch other teams pass me each week. At least I was able to stay in the top 10 for a good while before falling out of it last week and dropping down to my final spot this week. (Damn you, Kuroko’s Basketball! I would be madder at you if I didn’t enjoy you so much.) Ah well. This is still my best finish in FAL, so it’s tough to feel too bad about it, particularly when I knew victory was a lost cause following the rise of Kuroko. (Damn you!! *shakes fist*) I was even able to make a clean break from my rival who won’t be named for a couple of weeks, too! All in all, a decent FAL season for me even if it ends with me unable to choose what I am covering this season. Treat me well, whoever decides my fate! (Or not, I guess. It’s your choice, after all!)

As for what I’d do differently? Not pick such a shit bench, I guess!

Inushinde – 339th

vlcsnap-2014-01-02-23h17m41s118All things considered, I’m pretty satisfied with my result– I did guess two of the bottom five shows, after all. If I made any mistake, aside from not putting Pupa on my roster, it’s underestimating how good NouCome would be. I mean it wasn’t /good/, but neither did it turn into the wretched abomination that I expected it to. Barring a few wildcards like Coppelion, which everyone was in a race with everyone else to drop, and BlazBlue, things ended pretty well in my favor. In my own way, I achieved the planned Bottom wo Nerae, edging out both Scamp and Shinmaru in the loser bracket. I can’t say that I did as well as I could have, since I forgot to swap out my benches for shit when it could have really benefited me a ton, but I’m not going to exert myself in a contest to see who can best guess MAL’s shit taste for the season. That never ends well, and I still have moe battleship games to play.

Congratulations to TuckerNate and Jinkaine for beating myself and Shinmaru to the top of the league, and congratulations to Fifteenth for beating Inushinde to the bottom, even if that wasn’t necessarily your intention. You guys get to choose what to make us blog for the winter season. The rules are as follows: No sequels. Our obligation to cover the nominate show ends on April 1st, to prevent you from being funny and giving us some long-running shounen. Leave a comment stating which anime you want us to cover and who to cover it. For those at the top you choose Scamp or Shinmaru, and for you in last place you choose what Inushinde covers. Everyone else can leave comments with suggestions on what to blog. If one of the people involved hasn’t left a comment choosing by January 15 then it will go to whatever the next placed person chose, so go ahead and leave comments because you might get lucky.

  1. Good game, I slid down 14 places to 121th after coming 2 places below scamp sometime in the middle of the season.

In all seriousness, I haven’t heard of kuroko’s basketball or the fact that it’s really popular with MAL people before I looked at what the organizers had on their team. I only even became vaguely aware of the series when my sister asked me what’s that basketball anime everyone’s watching and talking about sometime in late 2012, to which I replied that it was probably slam dunk.

I should’ve trusted my gut instinct when I though strike the blood will be good. I thought that it would be something that I would enjoy, but others would think as trashy, turns out my tastes are the same as everyone else.

biggest let down of the season is still coppelion, and noucome was surprisingly good. Outbreak company was ok, but it was one of the top scorers.

    lessons learned:

    never disregard sequels
great anime that leaves you with nothing to talk about, or doesn’t generate controversy, would not be a good pick for your team, unless people who are watching those series are being counted that week.
noitamina time slot series doesn’t mean anything anymore.
mmorpg anime is always a sure pick

SEE YOU ALL IN SPRING. and now back to being anon

    1. Kuroko wasn’t that popular on MAL when it first started airing but really picked up steam the more it went on. Meanwhile Japan is fucking nuts for it. One of the biggest anime of this decade arguably

      1. It probably just shows how little I care about sports anime. Benching at least 1 sequel looks like a valid option next time.

Mushishi’s airing in spring right? and SAO? and Date a live? I’m quite sure the first two will be banned.

      1. oh could have been better too, i ended up forcing him to pick instead of pawning off the decision for me to make.

      2. if you have to ask what my pick woulda been, i’d say probably Nobunaga the fool after seing it’s first episode.

      3. it’d almost make sense group the two Nobunaga shows together and call the write-ups the “cartdriver deathmatch Oda edition”

and i think Sekai Seifuku: Bouryaku no Zvezda would have been the ultimate pick for ‘passing the buck to someone else cause i won’t touch that with a 10 foot pole” treatment.

    1. Nisekoi? Boring. Isn’t that Shaft which is way too deep into Scamp’s comfort zone?

Although directing aside, faulty source material might provide us with some quality blogging.

  2. i have a recommendation to make as well for next time, instead of having the winner pick a show immediately the season after, space it out so you would write about it during the next Fal league, so for instance the winners of spring 2014 get you to write about a show in the fall 2014, attempt to weaponize the shows written about in the cartdriver spotlight

  3. “Or Man United”

Lol totally got that, guess I’m not a ner…oh wait I watch anime.

I guess that makes me Arsenal, just about top four but no trophy to show ( top of the league this year though, hopefully it’ll stay that way)

39th is not bad for a first, although if I was better at managing the team I would have been much higher. I also learned not to blindly put faith in notaminA shows, Galilei Donna was only useful in bringing me down.

BTW, I would probably chosen Space Dandy since the staff all worked in at least one of my top three animes and I’m really hyped for it but oh well.

  4. Well, I was aiming to get in the top 50% overall and I managed that(just barely)So I’m happy enough, especially when I just sorta picked shows that might do well without doing much research. Not bad for a first try.

  5. I guess I did quite well, even though I made the huge mistake of putting Strike the Blood on my team. That ruined everything. Still, I ended up only 12 ranks away from Inushinde, that’s still something.

  6. D’aww, I want Scamp to blog Nisekoi.

But 10th place is alright, especially since it was my second time entering! If only I had played my cards better… Golden Time was more popular than I had thought.

  7. I could’t believe I actually beat Gan_HOPE326 in the end. And you’re wrong, I fought with all my blood, sweat, and tears to be at the bottom. I guess all those hours spent trying to use up all my ace cards for the wrong anime wasn’t in vain.

But eh, picking an anime is surprisingly difficult. Not sure if I should choose a mediocre looking high school setting but otherwise Yuri anime, japanese hell SoL gag anime, or that anime with almost naked main female character directed by DTB director.

    1. Good work!

Also, you have until the 15th, so no need to rush your choice! Might as well sample the wares … if you dare!

  8. Eh, I suppose I could have done worse. I was hoping for top 50 but I took a big hit that past week. Oh well, I’m okay with my results. And as much as I’d like to see you guys cover crap, I’d like to see some Dandy coverage. Or Sekai Seifuku which I think could go either way.

  9. lol I’m pretty sure you named me already in the last FAL post, Shin.

I’M SORRY, KUROBAS! I WILL NEVER DOUBT YOU AGAIN! So much regret for pulling it from my team at the last minute.

That aside, though, I’m also pretty pleased with how I did – I placed a bit better than last time and it was quite a thrill to be up in the top 5 for a while, capping out in a tie for second place (before Coppelion made like a B2 bomber and crashed itself into a lake)

And top 10 in the Cart Driver rankings ain’t bad! Looking forward to the spring season!

    1. My bench was so bad I kept Coppelion in right up until the final week when I finally swapped it out for Arpeggio.

  10. Fun FAL for me seeing as how I was stuck in the ~150th range for the last 2 FAL seasons. And I beat all three Cart Driver authors (^:

      1. This is going to be a fun series. I request the posts be written in a series of limericks (or haiku if opting for cultural relevance).

  11. if Fifteenth gives inushinde, Sekai Seifuku: Bouryaku no Zvezda
an unholy trinity will have formed

    harem
    yuri
    loli

the implications could mean a horde of traffic for this site if done right.

      1. You know what? I think joinedforfal is right. Sekai Seifuku: Bouryaku no Zvevda it is.

  12. “Nisekoi”

    “Sakura Trick”

Looks like the writers of Cart Driver will be blogging crap this Winter. See you all in the Spring.

    1. It’s actually when they are blogging crap, that this blog is the funniest. I still remember the “We are imouto” seies.

      1. You mean “WHO IS IMOUTO”
That is the funniest I ver read. I feel sory for Scamp though, I fear he damaged his brain from watching it.

  13. I’m probably not going to participate in FAL next year as it didn’t keep me engaged though I will keep an eye on how it goes down.

Also, great choice of pictures for this post!

  14. I don’t know you watch football/soccer Scamp. ManUnited will rise again, you see.
    In five season.
    Maybe
    D:

  15. I don’t feel bad about losing. I only feel bad for dropping nine spots this last week. I’m still not sure how that happened.

    1. There was a lot of movement in the last week. Made for some dramatic reading. I had managed to pull myself almost into the 70s before that final week pulled me back down.

  16. Looking forward to having a go at this when it’s back on in the spring and see how well I can guess MALs shit taste. There’s another “My VN mechanic is getting in the way of my harem” show airing in the spring, MAL’ll love that, it’s going on my list.
