Fantasy Anime League – Accepting Our Fate

It seems as if it has been forever since the previous FAL post, but it has been but a little more than a month. Maybe it seems longer because we’re all so engaged and fighting for higher stakes than ever before! We’re still clawing away (well, those of us not named Scamp are, anyway), but it appears as if you readers have gained the upper hand in the battle to decide who blogs what for Winter 2014. Good on you, and please don’t give me anything too shitty. Thank you in advance.

Scamp – 99th

Instead of talking about my current poor position (which isn’t even that poor, it’s still within the top 30% of FAL’s competitors. If this was the Premiership I’d be competing for that Europa League spot), I’m instead going to talk about potential improvements to FAL. I’ll leave all the gloating to Shinmaru.

Firstly, get rid of the fansub points. The reason fansub points were included originally was because it used to be a good indicator of hype and popularity. K-ON would get 20 sub groups while Shin Mazinger Z would get only one group. Nowadays though with almost everything simulcasted, it’s rendered a little meaningless. Let alone differentiating between groups using their own subs and copying Crunchyrolls, it creates this bizarre situation where the anime that doesn’t get simulcasted end up benefiting because more groups are scrambling for it. It’s confusing and outdated and should be scrapped. My second, and more daring suggestion, is to only count watching points every other week. At the moment watching points makes basically every other points tally irrelevant. It might move up or down one spot, but it reduces variability. If you want more variance, count them every other week. It would still be the most important way of getting points, but it won’t dominate like it does now.

Some new methods of getting points now. To move with the times, let’s count twitter discussion. Every season each anime has an official hashtag nowadays. Using a site like Topsy, you can see how often a specific hashtag has been used. The number is usually over 10k for every 30 days, so I say every 4 weeks in FAL an anime could be awarded hashtag use divided by 10. For example Meganebu has 32K uses in 30 days at the moment, so that’s 3,200 points. Another idea for points would be bloggers. In the past FAL used AnimeNano tag cloud but that became unreliable and was dropped. Now though you could use the Anime Power Rankings. It collects what 100+ bloggers thought of anime on a weekly basis and presents it into easy-to-use data. Count points every 3 weeks, 2000 points for each appearance in the top 5 and 500 points for an on-the-cusp appearance. The important thing with these suggestions is they’re all very simple to understand and easy to implement, which offering some more diversity to FAL. If you have any suggestions yourself, do say so in the comments.

Shinmaru – 9th

I’d gloat a lot, but I’ve found it’s difficult to breathe well when so high up in the standings. The air is really thin up here! I guess you wouldn’t know anything about that, though, Scamp. Enjoy your commoner’s air, buddy! That said, this is the week where those riding the Kuroko juggernaut train finally passed me up — when last we checked in, I was tied for second place, but I fell to fifth after a couple of weeks and now stand in ninth. Still in the top 10, and I hope I’m still there when the season is over, but I’m not totally sure how that will work out. (I did not help my cause by getting addicted to Kuroko’s Basketball and dropping series that are on my team. Galilei Donna is the only anime on my team that I’m actually watching, which is kind of sad. It’s on my bench, though, because it has completely bombed in FAL.)

There is one thing I can be proud about, however: This week I finally loosed myself from my FAL doppelganger, BokuSatchii! Through superior guts, guile and the will to stare at a computer screen for a half-hour counting forum posts, I discovered that Golden Time’s forum post count appeared to give it enough of a boost to surpass Log Horizon for a week. Thus, I decided to take a chance with my Ace and hoped BokuSatchii didn’t do the same, and I was handsomely rewarded for my decision. I’m basically the Riverboat Ron Rivera of Fantasy Anime League now. Your superior German technology is no match for American ingenuity, BokuSatchii!

One more thing as a general tip for all you lovely readers: If you have a reasonable substitute, then you’d better get Coppelion out of your team this week, because it will likely score in the negatives due to its awful drop count. (If you’re racing to the bottom, then get Coppelion on your team if you can! And Meganebu, as well!) Ideally, you would have switched out Coppelion last week since its mediocre MAL rating cost it thousands of points compared to other series. (I switched in Machine Doll last week.)

Inushinde – 339th

I just now noticed that they were still counting Pupa. While I guessed well with placing Phi Brain as my #1 pick, its paltry 154000 points is nothing compared to Pupa’s barely existent 250. If I had the good sense to swap that in at the season’s start, there would be nothing standing between me and sweet, sweet last place. But oh well, I guess there’s no better teacher than failure that keeps me from greater failure, and I guess I should keep an eye on shows that are troubled, but aren’t so troubled that they’re cancelled altogether.

Diabolik Lovers and I Want to Grope the Breast are about where I expected them to be, though I find it depressing that Diabolik Lovers is still scoring more than Kyousougiga. Yowamushi Pedal and Noucome are doing way better than expected, considering that I expected them to languish in the sulfurous haze of mediocrity alongside Phi Brain and Diamond no Ace. The shows themselves are surprisingly alright, and their rankings are actually pretty respectable, which of course means nothing but bad news for me.

Not all is doom and gloom, thankfully. I may be only 16th from the bottom, but I do have a few more aces up my sleeve. More specifically, the ace, which will let me make my really terrible team even worse by taking a -3,000 point hit for this week. That alone will propel me down to the depths of 343rd. From this point on, I will be required to be more proactive with my team, and actually utilize my wildcard and bench swaps to beautifully inept effect. Last place, at least in the Cart Driver’s league, isn’t completely out of my grasp. With a little luck, and sufficiently terrible developments, the shows might actually do the rest of the work themselves.

Lots of movement at the top! The end game is going to be pretty exciting. As a reminder, the first-place finisher gets to choose a Winter 2014 anime for either Scamp or me to blog for that season. (I don’t believe we ever specified a length limit, but for our sanity, we’re going to limit it to one or two cours, with one being preferred but not mandatory.) The second-place finisher gets to pick an anime for the leftover blogger. Whoever finishes in last place gets to pick what Inushinde blogs during the Winter 2014 season (assuming his team doesn’t miraculously shit itself in the end).

Exactly. At least for now I can bask in the questionable honor of last place for Pupaless teams.

FAL can be tricky since you don’t know exactly what will explode and what won’t. There will always be obvious choices, but there’s also always something nobody expects lurking in the shadows waiting to be a major player.

ugh, I flip flopped between yuushibu and galilei donna, thinking that all they’re counting were forum posts, and just when I thought I could finally pass scamp by using an ace, I still came up short of about 200 points.

then THAT episode of samurai flamenco happened, and I had galilei donna stuck in my team, so I went down 3 places while scamp went up 2 places, and so here we are.

hah, at least that guy who had the same team as me at the start and who hasn’t touched his/her team ever since is at 114th place.

I’ll be switching coppelion with yuushibu and I won’t touch that team until the end I think. let’s see if I can get past scamp :D

To help out, there’s a handy schedule on the main page of the Fantasy Anime League club (http://myanimelist.net/clubs.php?cid=379) that shows what they’re counting for the current week. This week it’s drops and favorites. (It doesn’t list forum posts, which they count on even weeks.)

I need to check FAL again. Am I last place in Cart Driver alone, or in the entire league? I’m afraid Samurai Flamenco might have pushed me too high for my own good. Thanks the gods of anime for Pupa.

There are four people behind you in Fantasy Anime League, but for the purposes of the game on The Cart Driver, you need only be last among the people playing here.

I like how I haven’t checked FAL since week 2 and I’m still in a fairly solid spot. Muwhahahahaha!

Also, curse you guys with your shameless Popee The Performer advertising. I thought I banished it to the deep reaches of space, to get trapped in a black hole, and experience spaghettification.

Thanks for the heads up on Coppelion! Haven’t really realized that it was dropping so drastically, glad I have Samurai Flamenco on backup, it receiving a great boost due to you-know-what and its resolution coming episode.

the games not over yet, but I think I have the esteemed position of highest placed team without kuroko no basuke 2 in it.

this season there hasn’t been a shingeki no kyojin to kill ace attempts, I’ve played three so far. my buddy could have had 4 if he hadn’t fuxxed one up

What frustrates me is that I have about the same team as the ones at the top of the league but because of my terrible managing skills I’m far from it. From putting the notaminA shows active for too long instead of the bench to putting Log Horizon as ace at the wrong time, I screwed up so much that it’s only thanks to my team that I’m at the top 100. I feel like I’m a kid in charge of Real Madrid.

But at least if Scamp is fighting for Europa League place that means I have a chance to get a Champions League place…… right?

The one thing to be learned is that achieving last place requires almost as good planning as that for first place. Almost, because you’re still free to do any silly thing you want. And yet, mistakes are still fatal on both sides of the chart, I learned it the hard way – never expected Strike The Blood to skyrocket.
The race is still not lost yet, let’s see how low my team can go.

I have suggested more wildcards and a longer period(s) to use them, but I still don’t know if they’ll take.

I agree with you on the fansubs. In the current state of anime fandom, fansubs are relics of increasingly limited usefulness when everyone can get streaming rips. Streams are actually valued less than fansubs in FAL, which is backwards IMO. It’d be interesting if they only counted non-English fansubs, because you could argue they have more worth in the international community.

But cutting watching numbers; not so much.

i’ve wondered what can be done with the ‘on-hold’ and ‘Plan to watch’ metrics, maybe the on-hold could be bundled along with drops, and maybe the plan to watch metric could be counted on the weeks there is not forums counted, so on first week the traditionally gimped 2nd week shows could still gather points to have a lesser handicap.
