Fantasy Anime League – 2nd place still on the cards…for one of us

Wolf's Rain 22.mkv_snapshot_14.58_[2013.10.13_22.49.53]

In FAL the general rule is that 90% of the game is your starting choices. Everything after that is just shuffling around on the spot, arguing over specifics. One of us has gotten that opening salvo down. The others….ehh…

I was going to get goofy Kill la Kill fanart for this post, but since most Kill la Kill fanart is slightly risque in nature I instead decided to use a bunch of derpy looking anime faces I happened to have on my hard drive. You’re welcome.

Scamp – 99th

On the positive side, I’m in the top 100. On the negative side…welp, this season is a wash. I do have the top three with Golden Time, Coppelion and Log Horizon. Yes, I managed to swap out Pupa with Log Horizon at the last minute when I saw what was happening with Pupa so at least that saved me from doing horribly. But still, why oh why did I convince myself Arpeggio would do well? It’s a fully CG animated TV show, of course it wouldn’t do well on MAL. And while it’s maybe too early to judge on some of the later airing shows like Samurai Flamenco and BlazBlue, the fact that they’ve both been outscored by the also late-airing multiple choice light novel anime shows that maybe I’ve made a horrible mistake.

I guess I won’t be choosing what I blog next Winter. Although maybe that won’t be so bad. I’ll let you in on a bit of the behind the scenes workings at Cart Driver. Pre-season we each choose an anime that we get first dibs on blogging. That doesn’t mean we will blog the show, it just means you get to cover it first. Shinmaru and Inushinde usually do cover the show they choose, but as for myself? So far this year I chose Sasami-san, Valvrave, Danganronpa and Arpeggio. My pre-season blogging choice has been the secret assassination machine that ruins potentially good anime. Maybe crippling that choice by letting the readers choose isn’t so bad after all

*He desperately tries to convince himself despite knowing they’ll choose either the fluffy yuri, the idol anime by Yamakan, or the little sister chastity belt anime*

Shinmaru –  2nd (tied)

I’m cherishing my position while I can, because without the ridiculous points machine that Kuroko’s Basketball is set to become eventually due to its gigantic user rating, I’m doubting my chances to win. Kuroko is just outside the top five as it is, and it’s not exactly far behind Nagi no Asukara in terms of viewers, so it seems like only a matter of time before it becomes a top five weekly anime. Combined with those user ratings boosts it’ll get during the season? That’s frightening. (It’s creeping ever closer to a 9, which is just unfair. I don’t think anything on my team is even close to an 8 at the moment.)

But whatever. Now is not the time to complain — it is the time to brag! I’ve got the top five scorers on team right now, which is pretty good considering I chose my team with hopes and prayers. How’s not having Nagi no Asukara and Strike the Blood treating you, Scamp? At least you won’t get second this season! There’s some heartbreak you won’t have to live with. I already know exactly what I’ll post when I beat you at the end. I know you’ll love it! It will be wonderful.

P.S. lol Scamp lol

Inushinde – 343rd

Alright, things are looking up… er, down. Phi Brain S3 is acting as a predictable lead weight, dragging my team down to the depths of despair. MAL’s apathy toward puzzle anime with sizzling homoerotic tension remains gloriously unchanged. Unfortunately, there are a few upsets threatening my goal of bottom wo nerae.

The biggest surprise for me is that Diabolik Lovers is breaking the top 10 in terms of shows watched. Considering that I was banking on Creepy Attempted Rapist Vampires being something of a niche demographic, I’m disheartened that it’s still doing reasonably well. Other than that, things look to be in good shape. I made a good call putting Arms Wrestling and Yowamushi Pedal toward the bottom of the roster, but I don’t think they’d really have the power to threaten my glorious fall into disgrace.

Provided people don’t suddenly acquire a zealous interest in fujoshi bait puzzle shows, I think bottom wo nerae is still wholly feasible. In a way, I’m actually doing better than Scamp.

Sorry if I missed any of you. I couldn’t find the names of a bunch of the people who said they entered. For the record, just leaving a comment on the original post wasn’t enough to enter the competition, you had to go through the process on the club itself. I do find it amusing that we have a person right down the bottom of the table, beating the two people I know who were going for bottom, wasn’t even trying to finish last.

Choose noitaminA they said, MAL will lap them up like Psycho-Pass they said.

@amarrez, yeah, psychpass could have been put in any slot because of the Urobutcher name behind it. silver spoon did ok, but didn’t get top 5 for this summer season according to my phantom league spreadsheet. if Noitanima was to actually air it’s shows first week in the season i could see that being better.

it’s alright Scamp, i’m delusional enough to think i’ve gotten enough of a lead that something will come rescue me from not having Nagi no Asukara on my bench in the next 2 weeks, and with my victory i can decide on a show that will deserve the spotlight you’ll shine on it.

not having Nagi no Asukara came about from thinking the Mal userbase seemed to have a cold reception to P.A Works recent shows(i was tracking the summer season and Uchouten Kazoku, darling of the anisphere had no love from Mal users) and that i underestimated the fact that Mari Okada’s name has such power to make people forget that without an adaptations structure the middle and end fall apart leaving a bad taste of ‘it could have been done better’.

as an aside, with the competition running into the first week of winter season, does that mean you’ll be doing first immpressions anyway and then finding out what you’ll blog second week?

Haven’t decided yet. It doesn’t end until the 5th Jan, which is still fairly early into the season. I’ll decide on the specifics closer to the date

I still got a chance, but not having Log Horizon on my team hurts like hell. Here’s to hoping Machine Doll will make a strong ascent.

    Posted October 14, 2013 at 11:54 am | Permalink

Well, that’s half true. After my first week, I was honestly surprised to be so low. I could have done the logic thing and swapped Pupa for Log Horizon, that I have in my bench, but at this point that would barely allow for an average placement. Better to go straight on for the dubious glory of being the absolute last.

Anyway, that’s what you get when you choose your starting team without even researching the first episode airing dates. Half my team ended up being a burden after week 1 because they hadn’t even begun.

Yeah sorry about that; forgot to join the actual club. Not that I stood a chance anyways, considering that I was genuinely assured that Pupa was a good choice.
That aside, Inushinde’s “I can count to potato” Shion is possibly the funniest anime screencap I’ve ever seen.

Whoa, so many readers taking part in FAL. This blog really promotes this event.

My gamble payed off! My guts told me that Little Busters! Refrain might pay off and it did. It’s a Key visual novel material and it just has too many fans to be left out.

I’m also glad I chose Kuroko no Baskue even though sequels usually aren’t very popular.

My mistake was benching Little Busters and bringing it into game only now. That’s why I’m so far behind. Hopefully I end up in top 100

I could have changed SF to Log Horizon on the with first week but my blind faith in notaminA shows made me stick with it through the second week. Oh how wrong I was, now SF is just dead weight to me.

I’m still thinking of switching Galilei Donna with Strike the blood but I still think it might do better. Come on MAL it has moe girls made by the designer of SAO! I know you gobble this shit up like tic tacs!!!!

  9. Posted October 14, 2013 at 12:40 pm | Permalink

I wanted to enter but missed it because I was on a week leave to some secluded island (for job related stuff) without internet connection, damn.

I checked this week’s ranking just and I was really surprised. Log Horizon is not a surprise since MAL users are gay for SAO. Coppelion because it’s high school girls with guns. *shrugs* Golden Time is expected too because it’s a rare college anime. But, Nagi no Asukara is the next one? Like, SERIOUSLY? That anime totally makes me head-desk and face-palm by 2nd episode.

    -He loves her
    -She loves another boy
    -Another girl loves him
-He yells at that other boy
WTF? Why do I have to watch boys who haven’t grown some hair down there yelling at each other? <– Dropped.

PS: the setting is ridiculous too. Yeah, People can totally walk around under the ocean as they are on the land. I bet they have iron plates for clothes. But I doubt that even wearing iron plates can make you walk like that under the ocean.

i dunno maybe people are suckers for fantasy racism.

the real brain-killer is the fact that they are even sending the children up to the surface for schooling in the first place if such traditions of outcasting/ostracizing those who don’t keep into the community exist.

maybe not enough has been revealed and there might be times where surface dwellers can be accepted into the sea dwellers community by recieving the blessing of the water god, but even if that does comes around to happen it’s too late for it to get into my good graces.

Samurai Flamenco has pretty much the same stats as Galilei Donna now, and they’re both closing in on Noucome. It’s the kind of series that could very well explode in popularity late during the season, so I wouldn’t give up hope.

But Arpeggio… yes, you dun goofed.

And I goofed for leaving Kuroko out despite KNOWING it would do well. Ah well. The season is still long.

here is a clipping of my spreadsheet for how those blacklisted shows have done.

    Kill la Kill – 104005
    Kyoukai no Kanata – 93357

    Coppelion – 46914
    Log Horizon – 43603
    Golden Time – 43138
    Nagi no Asukara – 37417
    Outbreak Company – 36892

quite a huge gulf of points, nearly double.

quite happy the Fal staff blacklist proved to be needed this season, and had those not been blacklisted, who knows what the season would have looked like.

    • Posted October 14, 2013 at 2:46 pm | Permalink

An interesting thing FAL could’ve done instead of outright banning them is give the choice of one or the other, like with the 3 sequels. Kyoukai no Kanata would’ve assuredly been the safer pick on the reliable back of KyoAni’s glorified moe sakuga, but those gambling on the boom or bust potential of Trigger would’ve been richly rewarded.

      • Shinmaru
        Posted October 14, 2013 at 4:52 pm | Permalink

That actually is an interesting idea, though I think with those scores FAL would definitely be over in the first week since everyone who chose Kill la Kill would have an enormous advantage.

Copying the Scamp´s team spine wasn’t that bad idea. Only Machine Dolls and Arpeggio with their shitty CGs wrecked “our” chance of winning. Following Shinmaru´s view by choosing Nagi no Asukara instead of BlazBlue gave me more points by replacing Arpeggio in the second week.
Whats left sitting on my bench is Samurai Flamenco. Will this anime be in any use?

Which Noitamina shows have actually done well? It seems like a hit or miss with them.

    • Scamp
      Posted October 14, 2013 at 5:54 pm | Permalink

Psycho Pass, Eden of the East did really well, and Kids on the Slope I think did pretty well in the end. While FAL wasn’t running during the two seasons these were airing, I’m sure Guilty Crown and Ano Hana would have done really well.

Noitamina is still a decent bet, but it doesn’t look like either of these two will take off.

I can’t believe Galilei Donna is the worst performer on my team… I knew MAL had shit taste, but Strike the Blood? Really? I picked that mostly as a joke.

I can’t believe I didn’t pick Nagi no Asukara though. How was I supposed to know Mari Okada would actually write something competent for once?!

Oh well, here’s hoping Unwatchable CGI Doll turns itself around so I can break into the top100.

At least I’m ahead of Scamp. That’s the important thing :>

I was waiting for this week’s results to decide which I needed to replace, If I had acted sooner I would have replaced blue steel with “I’m not a hero I got a job”.

my goal until midseason would be to place above 25%, so far I think I won’t fall below 50% and that’s ok, quite unlike somebody who’s always aiming for 2nd place :D

For some reason I thought that swaps would only count the week AFTER you choose to swap. I’m not sure why.
So I ended up swapping Samurai Flamenco a week earlier than intended, plus I chose Kuroko as Ace when I had Log Horizon and Coppelion on my team, so I ended up going down 8 places due to my carelessness. *sigh*
Ah well, it IS my first time, so I guess I’d be happy if I can manage to stay in the top 100 till the end :P

Feels good to be at number 24–and to be number 7 on the list of readers here. Having Kuroko no Basket 2 will probably shoot me up even higher, since everyone on my team besides Coppelion seems to be pretty solid, score-wise. However, Coppelion has shown to be in the top two on FAL for the past two weeks and remains at number one overall, so I don’t see myself swapping it out any time soon–much less for Machine-Doll, which started out with a curiously-high score but continues to sink with every passing week.

If I manage to keep an even field like this and play my cards right, the lack of Outbreak Company on my team won’t hurt so bad–and I could very well make it up to the number one spot~!

    What I learned:

-Don’t pick any anime with heavy CGI.
-Don’t pick low key titles like Pupa (I dodged the bullet by changing my list)
-Don’t go for anime where fanservice or sexual undertonse are main points. (I don’t know what to say about Diabolik Lovers)
-Look at what studios have consistently popular anime even if they’re same old same old materialwise.

  30. Posted October 15, 2013 at 6:14 am | Permalink

Haha, Shin, the fight is on! The first one to back down loses it all! Even though we’re both probably going to lose to the other guy who’s tied with us, because he has Kuroko on his bench!

Hindsight being 20/20, I probably should’ve realized that this was just not going to be a popular season for noitaminA. There simply wasn’t all that much buzz about it, so putting Galilei Donna on the bench instead of Kuroko was a bit of an oversight. I even said outright in my comment on the previous FAL post that I hoped I wouldn’t regret not picking Kurobas. That’s what I get for betraying the very show I champion, I suppose. Should’ve listened to my animes and fought for my ideals!

Still, I’m quite pleased with where I am right now, as I’m sure Shin is as well. Even if our bench swaps will probably go completely unused, we’ve got a pretty ideal active team, so this battle will come down to effective use of Aces and Wildcards, and I imagine we can still place quite highly even with minimal interaction.

Part of me’s actually kind of glad I don’t have Kuroko on my team, because, this being only my second season, I don’t have enough FAL experience to have any idea what the best way to play it would be. Given that I missed all my bench swaps last season by a week, I’d probably end up messing up the timing here, too. It’s a tricky play – there are at least four different ways to reasonably approach this problem, and the way it’s played can make or break a team.

It’s amazing how SRS BZNS this gets when you actually start doing well. And I don’t even have an evil plot laid out yet for what to make you guys blog if when I win.
