Eccentric Family episode 11 – Sandman

vlcsnap-2013-09-18-14h50m54s228Normally these two brothers are hard to take seriously as villains. Even when they’re locking little boys in garages to starve to death and capturing animals to be brutally slaughtered and devoured, I still can’t take them seriously. But turn one of them into the Sandman villain from Spiderman with the creepiest giant morphing head coming out of a wall and suddenly they are more terrifying than 50 Bentens. I couldn’t even work out what animation method they were using. I’m assuming it was CG animated because it swayed constantly, but the sandy filter over his head meant I couldn’t see the usual botox-look that anime CG often has. It ended up operating in this creepy uncanny valley place that creeped the fuck out of me right throughout the scene.

vlcsnap-2013-09-18-14h23m41s38It appears I was totally right as usual about Benten being the one who is really in charge during this whole scene. Well perhaps not in charge so to speak, but simply using the villain as she sees fit and does not give a hoot about his plans. They were about to capture Yasaburo only for Benten to hover over and take him away. Not like she was rescuing him or anything, she just saw him and wanted to say hi. That’s how far below her recognition the Ebisugawa family are.

I’m trying to guess how Benten will figure into the rest of this story, but I can’t work out how her story goes. In the case of the other brothers, their arcs seem obvious. Their story is about coming out from under the shadow their dad’s death left over them and becoming their own people capable to standing up to their father’s legacy. Little brother stops being a wimp and saves someone, older brother takes greater responsibility by theoretically winning the election, and frog brother stops living in shame and climbs out of that well.

I don’t quite know how Yasaburo is supposed to finish his arc. Maybe get their revenge on the Ebisugawa family somehow. Goes slightly against the family theme the show has been pushing, but I’m not sure the Ebisugawas count as family anymore. I mean, the two brothers were either in love or engaged to their cousin in that family, which I know is seen as cool in Japan but kinda crosses the boundary between what’s considered family and not.

The other alternative to Yasaburo’s arc is to have him do something with Benten, but I can’t imagine what that something would be. It could be anything from kicking her in the face, getting eaten by her, or having sex with her. Or possibly all three, in any order, or at the same time. I’m sure having sex with someone while you’re eating them as they are kicking you in the face would be an uncomfortable experience, although someone out there definitely has that fetish.

Everything in this episode made me really really angry.

I rather enjoyed that the family was pretty much universal on ‘Yasaburo will save us!’ while that was in the process of not working out well at all.

Kind of a shame the teaser after the credits spoiled a bit of the ending though.

Also, unless the ending defies my expectations and explains this, I want a bonus episode or something that just covers Benten’s issues from her PoV.

What happened after the credits has somehow completely left my mind, so thankfully I haven’t been spoiled. Or maybe I just sorta don’t care…

I think my problem is I wanted more of what that spoiler had than what the show has been regularly giving us.

Those 2 brothers were so snarky that I wanted to punch them in the face. I was actually thinking, “When are you going to stop talking because you’re annoying the heck out of me!” They have no actual power and they looks silly with their iron undergarments.

I have no clue why everyone and their cousin is afraid of Benten. What can she actually DO besides talk a mean game? What I dislike about this show is that everyone lays down like a wet doormat to Benten’s every whim. Is it just because she’s a human? Is it because she has the inside scoop on the individual characters? Is it because she can reveal secrets about the tanuki and tengu societies? Even so, it seems like it’ll be underwhelming because the power she holds is disproportionate to what she can actually do. What’s to be afraid of?

Also I think it’ll be lazy brother or tsundere oji-san to the rescue. Maybe Benten will open up and cancel her dastardly plan.

It’s because she’s purdy and nobody wants to be on the bad side of the purdy lady in case she sleeps with them.

I think this may actually be the reason

        Hah, she’s not a Tengu or a human….she’s a praying mantis!

I wanted to see the little one use his powers of electricity to shock the henchmen in the rain.
