Diabolik Lovers episode 1 – Fedora-wearing rapists are so sexy

Are you a woman who enjoys the idea of being raped by a series of self-righteous men wearing fedoras? Does being mentally, physically, and sexually assaulted with no hope of escape make your panties wet? Does being called a bitch and having men comment on your boobs like there are literally no other parts of your body that matter turn you on? Then I recommend organising a night out with the denizens of Reddit’s Mens Rights board, or maybe a pickup artists forum. But wait, those men aren’t totemo sexushii anime boys. They’re real people with things like body odour and chest hair. Thankfully a solution has appeared: You can just watch Diabolik Lovers!

The plot involves a teenage girl JUST LIKE YOU, YOU’RE A TEENAGE GIRL OH EM GEE THAT COULD BE ME VISITING THIS MANSION AND GETTING RAPED BY MEN WEARING FEDORAS KYAA moving to a fancy old mansion on behest of her father. There she meets a bunch of guys who, despite being rich enough to own a mansion, are not able to afford shirts with more than one button around the navel. Originally she’s worried about their predicament and how their inability to button their shirts could be why they have no body heat. However it turns out they have no body heat because they are all dead inside.

They follow the standard sexual predator kidnapper routine by cutting off all her communication to the outside world, threatening her with violence if she doesn’t comply, and then gangbang her at the end of the episode. We’ve got a while to wait before the next episode, but I assume what happens is she isn’t seen for the next 14 years until her skeleton is found in a basement and racists see the TV news report and blame it on foreigners. But not me, no! When I watch these news reports about girls being taken hostage and being used as sexual slaves, I’m too busy furiously masturbating!

Look, I know a lot of otome games are like this. And hey, I have a masochistic streak too (I did watch Diabolik Lovers after all doh ho ho). But sometimes it’s worth calling this stuff out for how truly fucked up it really is. I’ve probably set off a bajillion trigger warnings writing this post and I feel kinda gross even writing it. But this is literally what the show is about. It’s about a girl being locked in a house and sexually assaulted by a bunch of guys, created for the purpose of girls getting off to it.

I can’t get off to Saya no Uta, Saya no Uta is all about pure love and clarity, I can’t get off to something that genuine. (You wish I was kidding, too.)

B-But it made it sell more copies! And Saya no Uta is one of the few VN’s where the sex scenes felt like they had something to do with the story and weren’t just slapped afterwards.

About Diabolik Lovers, I may watch it just to laugh at it like I did with Amnesia last winter, but if it’s as bad as you say it may not even be possible to do that.

I sample otome-type shows because I like to think it gives me a look as to how girls see harem shows. Well, to be fair, I got more (somewhat guilty) laughs out of this than Brother’s Conflict. I might actually watch the next episode to find out what happened to Bitch-chan.

I’m still watching Brothers Conflict in hopes of getting a School Days ending out of the deal (I can dream) and because I like animated animu boys dancing.

This show made me feel kind of ill.

Also, just from a writing viewpoint……isn’t 6 sadistic vampires a really narrow niche to plumb…?

        damn. missed that memo somehow.

one thing I have noticed is there’s a lot of terrible shoujo crap I can read in manga form just fine, and then once it gets animated I’m either bored senseless or queasy.
I feel like ep2 may defang the boys a bit,but I’m not exactly sure what that will improve.

This type of otome/romance content where guys are outright abusive/rapists is marketed so hard to girls.
it’s not like every single girl out there naturally wants to be insulted and injured and put in danger by the person she loves. So it worries me. I couldn’t go anywhere near a book shop or some ladies’ website last year without getting that awful piece of 50 shades of crap pushed in my face. Meanwhile many actually well-written books with romance and erotica portrayed in a non-crazy way got no attention from press and marketing. But shit likes 50 shades is supposedly what women should buy. And godforbid we got something about a woman dominating a man that would not be marketed at all and it would be considered manhating.

tl;dr not this shit again, some girls might like it but they’re really pushing this shit on us.

If Wikipedia is to be trusted:
      Written by: Seiko Nagatsu [1]

“Seiko (聖子, 青子, 晴子, 清子, 正子 etc. Seiko?) is a Japanese given name, almost exclusively used for female.” [2]

That would be a no. And unless Shinobu is a boy’s name and no one told me, the director is female too. You’ll have to dig deeper if you want to blame men for everything.

no we can’t safely say that – anidb lists both the script writer and director as women and the translating the japanese wiki page for the director also states that the director is a woman

pfft, I find this suggestion funny. Not sure you’ve ever looked at the kind of stuff that happens in Otome games lately. Plenty of girls getting raped as punishment for making the wrong move in the game.

I’m a woman, an anime fan, and I like a vampire story. I liked this anime for all of 3 minutes. I was with it with the girl, who’s actually not that bad as females anime characters go, and then the first guy showed up and spoke. At that moment, I knew this show was going straight into the dropped pile. There’s only so much I can take for otome game romance shows. I found some interesting parts to Amnesia, I am trudging through Brothers Conflict, but this show crossed the line in episode 1, and it’s not even your standard half-hour show! So yeah, this is a no go for me.

    • Scamp
      Posted September 17, 2013 at 9:28 am | Permalink

You can’t really blame the girl for any of the issues so far. She did make an effort to escape, and tried to get out pretty quickly once she realised what was up. I’m certain she’ll turn into a wet blanket lead later who will team up with her sexy rapists later but who am I to judge

  8. Posted September 17, 2013 at 9:36 am | Permalink

I feel really, really bad for whoever actually enjoys this.

  9. Posted September 17, 2013 at 10:36 am | Permalink

B-but otome games aren’t that bad, usually their anime versions are shit!
I can’t speak for this particular one, of course, but I was really surprised by how good Hakuoki was and how normal its heroine can be, if I choose the right answers. There always are some romanchiku rapisto character (in Hakuouki it was Kazama, in Amnesia it was Toma and so on), but he’s usually one option from the bunch available.
But yeah, girls love them rape fantasies, just look at how known and liked are Mayu Shinjo works, despite the fact that she draws ugly guys. Or how popular love through rape is in yaoi genre.
That said, how DARE you insult them fine men in fedoras!

    • Raiphin
      Posted September 17, 2013 at 1:46 pm | Permalink

Glad to hear Hakuoki was better than its adaptation….I don’t have the time/interest to play otome games but was always curious about them and yeah, the adaptations tend to be….not so good.

2nded on Mayu Shinjo being strangely popular while also horrifying.

      Posted September 17, 2013 at 8:54 pm | Permalink

To be fair, most of the otome game adaptations I’ve seen aren’t terrible because of all the rape. It’s more to do with the fact they’re just terrible plot, characters, writing etc.

      • Kiraly
        Posted September 17, 2013 at 9:36 pm | Permalink

They tend to have better plot than the equivalent romance VN/LN adaptations for guys, which is in great part because they actually have a beginning, a middle and an END. I’ll take Hiiro no Kakera over Date A Live any day.

I’d say they even have better characters, but I’m biased because being a girl makes me feel galgame characters are aliens from planet Perfect or something. Who the fuck ACTS like that?

And regarding the rape fantasies: I’ll bet you anything all but maybe one of these dudes is actually a nice guy and a perfect husband, once the girt ‘tames’ the, and deals with their inevitably tragic pasts.

…uhh, anyway, I think I sort of like this. I’m always up for creepy as fuck sexy vampires. (I blame that on growing up with Anne Rice novels.) Well, as long as they stay creepy don’t go into full-on sappy otome game romance mode.

*cough* And you have no ground to complain, Scamp. You like Senjougahara.

      • Scamp
        Posted September 17, 2013 at 10:56 pm | Permalink

lol actually a ‘nice guy’ if you get to know him beyond the raping and the insulting and all that. Somehow that excuse doesn’t sit too well with me~

With Senjogahara, there’s never any real doubt that Arararagi is actually in any danger with her. It’s consensual sadism, which is totally ok and hot. Diabolik Lovers is closer to Future Diary, but there it’s always very clear with its depiction of Yuno as being a crazed psychopath you should be afraid of, not as her being sexy and this being a hot scenario. Some people may happily interpret it as such, but not the show itself.

      • Kiraly
        Posted September 17, 2013 at 11:10 pm | Permalink

I mostly got the impression that the guys were intended to be creepy psychopaths (isn’t that the selling point?), which is why I’m up for it. I’ll probably drop it once the sap starts, if it starts (it probably will). Or maybe not, I have a way or torturing myself with these types of series (I finished Amnesia!)

And you know how it is with the verbal abuse, they don’t actually “know her”, and she still has a lot of work ahead being perfectly nice and turning them into the perfect partner! Like in Every. Shoujo. Ever.

Remember Red Data Girl? It took about 3 episodes for the asshole to drop the snark and become a loyal bodyguard type. And then he was the perfect boyfriend because she ‘conquered’ him.

Was this otome created 100% by women?
Because I could swear the japanese version of creepy MRA’s were involved funding this shit.
The show could redeem itself in only one way: If the girl flipped out and gave every single of those abusive guys a slow, horrible death. Or possibly, an army of women ran in and did it for her, I’m not picky.

Err, those abusive guys are vampires. Like ‘yummy, our relative delivered us lunch!’ vampires. Having them be any other way would just be silly.

This episode would have been downright perfect if we didn’t know this was the adaptation of a romance game and that she will eventually fall in love with one of them.

  12. Posted September 17, 2013 at 6:13 pm | Permalink

I’ve reviewed the game on my blog about a year ago.
From an otome gamer pov, I only enjoyed it for the dummy head parts with the voice actors rather than all the gross shit that they did. The triplets are the worst (+BDSM tea douche Reiji) and only Shu and Subaru ever really loved the heroine (though she still had to put up with their shit.) They all have psychological issues, mostly with their moms so you can guess how that’s gonna turn out.

but yea the ridiculous amount of abuse was so absurd that at a point I just started laughing at how ridiculous it was. though during Laito’s route my laughter turned into “I hope this ends soon cause….”

p.s. the director of the games is actually a man. (Iwasaki Daisuke)

I had to look up Laito and then discovered he was the Fedora jerk and thought, ‘ah, but of course.’

really, I know that ‘bitch’ means kind of a different slang thing in Japanese (….sort of….) but WOW what a turn off.

      • Posted September 17, 2013 at 7:59 pm | Permalink

the bitch slang in japanese refers to like “bitch as in female dog in heat”. so when he calls her bitch-chan it’s because she’s basically like blow up sex doll to him (and his brothers.) it’s pretty much the equivalent of calling her a slut. (Which the brothers actually DO call her various times in the game but using the word 淫乱)

Interesting to hear the director is a dude. I remember hearing about the editor in chief of a yaoi publication being a dude who had to OK everything that went into his mag. Due to classic glass ceiling, they couldn’t even comprehend hiring a woman in that position, so he was left looking at all this hardcore gay porn because he was in charge.

Kiraly – Sweet Pool is not as disgusting as one would be lead to believe. That in itself is basically a myth propagated by squeamish little girls. Even though it is known as the BL version of Saya no Uta, more of an emphasis is placed on the heavy atmosphere and relationship the main couple share rather than OMG GORE!1111.

While I was watching, I almost forgot that it was an anime I downloaded off from horriblesubs. I thought it was a hentai anime the way everything is presented

Anyways I actually watched Amnesia up to episode 4 because the time traveling setting intrigued me, but dropped it because it was very boring to watch and the heroine was literally dumb.

Then I watched the first episode of brothers conflict and then dropped it because the heroine was a total idiot. All the guys too, if it was some slap stick comedy it would be fine but it wasn’t (or was it?)

It seems my problem for these adaptations are usually from the characters seem to look like they are acting a bad play with very serious and straight faces, the funny factor is completely removed and then left with the bad parts. It makes it really hard to watch

As for diabolik lovers, the heroine at least tried to escape and knew she was in danger. At least she has a bit of common sense and tried to think what to do on that situation, so I might give this a chance

The thing is though, there aren’t many otoge that really deserve an anime. Black Wolves Saga (which coincidentally, comes from the same company that made Diabolik Wifebeaters) would have been an ideal project; furryshit accusations aside, it’s a dark sort of fairytale set in the medieval ages with political intrigue galore.

I don’t know what is with reverse harem animes these days, but most of the girls are DUMB. Hakuouki, Amnesia, Brother’s Conflict and now Diabolik Lovers. Gosh, I wish they have a character with brains like Haruka in Ouran. :( Guess cause they probably based off of otome games.
