Anime Fall/Autumn: Gai-Rei-Zero, Chaos;Head, Yozakura Quartet, Kemeko Deluxe

The fourth installment of my previews. I’m only going to do one more after this, so hopefully that Clamp/Madhouse mystery one will be subbed by then. But enough of that, onto the previews!

Autumn/Fall Anime preview and first impressions

My Rating System Explained!

A = If you watch anything this season, watch this

B = Very good, sometimes surprisingly so.

C = If you have the time, you should check this out

D = Not my kind of thing, I won’t be watching this

E = Bad. Very bad, ignore this show

F = Frustratingly awful

Gai-Rei-Zero

Gai-Rei-Zero was 20 minutes of mindless action. Action that had a catchy soundtrack, bizarre fighting techniques (she killed them using her motorbike!) and terrible CGI. Yeah, for a good 20 minutes this was pretty mindless. Lots of shooting and tech people yelling cryptic stuff in rooms full of computers along with another room of executives discussing something cryptic.

And then it ended with the biggest cliffhanger of the season. Suddenly I was transfixed to my screen as I watched those last 2 or so minutes unfold. Chances are the rest of the show will go back to mindless violence, but I have to at least see how they will resolve that. Actually I probably won’t watch the next episode unless it gets good reviews.

Rating: Pretty mindless stuff. A D, even with that ending

Chaos;Head

Chaos;Head is weird. It acts like a rubbish eroge adaptation, with it’s ‘watch cute girls file by’ opening and closing songs. Each girl has their own hair colour, and are all compact neat and tidy in their uniforms. But nope, this is far creepier than that. This is a very odd show.

What freaks me out isn’t so much the murder and blood, but the how they act so crappy-eroge-like, yet there is all this freaky stuff going on, I guess it’s like Higurashi. Heck, I’m not even sure at this stage which of these characters are illusions or not!

Chaos;Head is like the bastard child of Shuffle and Paranoia Agent.

Rating: We’ll have to see how much substance it has later on, but a C+ for now

Yozakura Quartet

The two pictures here are shown before and after the halfway point adverts. I’m using the one of the girl as my wallpaper. What these pictures should show you is this: Yozakura Quartet has style.Yup, certainly the most stylish show this season, at least until Michiko no Hatchin comes out. When a show has this much stlye you just feel yourself sink into the world it has created.

Plotwise, the jury is still out. I wasn’t exactly blown away by the story. Heck, I’d even hazard to say that it was…boring! I do like the characters, but they need to come up with a bit more chemistry between them or else the whole idea of the quartet (even though there is 6 of them) becomes useless. But I will this a fair chance, based off the style alone.

Rating: Bring in the chemistry and something higher than a will appear

Kemeko Deluxe

A girl with super powers suddenly hops through the protagonists window and proclaims that she is his bride, complete with wedding gown and all. So what’s the catch? It’s a fat, chibi, green-haired robot named Kemeko. The director also did Hare+Guu, and you can tell. This has one of the most off the wall mad humour I have ever seen. Luckily for me, I happen to like that.

I should stress here and now that this anime is not for everyone. The humour is about as wacky as you can get and also quite perverted at times, such as Kemeko panty flashes (may I remind you that Kemeko is that fat, green haired robot). If you want something serious or even something that makes sense, then don’t bother.

It’s job is to make you laugh, and I laughed a lot! I laughed so hard and so much that I collapsed in a heap on the floor in genuine pain. The opening and closing are the exact same. The opening has Jesus himself starring in it, and the closing includes the line (if I am to believe the fansubbers) ‘Sigmund Frued is an erotic twerp’.

Parodies everywhere, giant evil robot appliances, this show has it all. I loved Hare+Guu, it’s one of my all time favorites. Kemeko is the new Guu.

Rating: While it may not be quite to your taste, if I gave it anything other than an A I’d be lying to myself

Ga-Rei Zero: weird, but I’m giving it another episode before I give my full verdict.
Kemeko Deluxe: seriously? Is it THAT good? I’ll give it a try later.

p/s: I’m still catching up on all the fall animes.

    Is Kemeko that good?
No, I think I’m just wierd and comedy deprived. But if you liked Hare+Guu you’d like Kemeko.
^^^ BTW that is a picture of Hare himself! :)

I’ll take back my words. From this first impression, I have my doubts on Kemeko. And probably, I won’t watch it altogether.

My picks for the season: Nodame Cantabile Paris Chapter (review will follow soon, I hope), Gundam 00 Season 2, Kuroshitsuji, Toradora, Ga-Rei Zero (giving it another chance), Kannagi (love the humour but not sure how long it would last), and soon Kurozuka, Mouryou no Hako, and Michiko to Hatchin. Wow! That’s a long list…

HAHAHAHAHA. Kemeko Deluxe is funny!! The plot might be super obvious the moment they showed the swimming pool scene but we get to wait in anticipation of how kemeko came about…which in the meantime leads to more fan service and stuff. I dislike fan service though so if I still continue to watch beyond episode 2…I think that really says something about the weird humour.

P.S. Fanservice includes girl zipping up the guys pants because he was in rush and faceplanting himself into her chest. Normally, I would alt+F4 but kemeko is the special thing that’s keeping me watching.

Yozakura Quartet doesn’t really impress so I would probably KIV it.

Ga-rei zero made me laughed during the first half. Monsters? Slice and dice! More monsters? brilliant strategy is born to take them out! Then my jaws hit the floor with a loud thud during the second half. It was soukou no strain all over again with one exception which I found out in episode 2… =/

Ga-rei-zero has been getting good reviews so I’m slightly tempted to pick it up again. I’ve never been one for mindless violence, but you never know.

Kemeko has flopped since the first episode and it’s jokes are already getting stale. Chaos;Head is just wierd. And yeah, Yozakura Quartet isn’t amazing or anything. I’m watching it for the cool screencaps at the halfway point to use as wallpapers :)

Casshern, Nodame, Kuroshitsuji, Toradora and(surprisingly)Kannagi are the picks of the season for me. Michiko and Kurozuka havn’t revealed enough to propally judge them yet.

Kannagi is not too bad, honestly. The same goes to Toradora and Kuroshitsuji. Michiko looks good and that is enough for me to keep me watching. Kurozuka? Let’s wait for a couple more episodes.

You really should pick up Gai-Rei Zero again. I watched the first episode, then decided not to come back to it after reading your review. I eventually ended up watching another episode anyway, and from there I was hooked. It’s quite good.

    @Josh

I have been reading good reviews about Gai-Rei-Zero so I am tempted to pick it up again. Problem is I’m watching too many shows and time is becoming more limited, I recently dropped Chaos Head and Kurozuka because they weren’t catching my attention and I’m probably gona drop Clannad aswell, I just don’t have the time(plus this season of Clannad isn’t great).

Then again I would’ve preffered to watch mindless gai-rei action then the shite Kemeko turned into…

You should watch Ga-Rei Zero, the tone from episode 1 carried onto episode 2. Episode 3 onwards features a totally different new arc. Go try!

just watched Gai-Rei Zero up to ep 10. like you, i was tempted to dump it, but the story has gotten sooo much better since episode 3. plus, i like the way they did the round trip thing back to the end of episode 2 at the end of 10. i’m looking to see if 11 is out soon.
