Did you really think I could go through these posts with no Endless Eight?
How many of you reading this post were around when the last episode of Neon Genisis Evangelion aired? I certainly wasn’t. Heck, I dare say there might even be a few of you that weren’t even born (kids these days are such whizzes at computers). But I have heard reports at what the reaction of anime fandom was. The ending to one of the greatest and most original series ever created ended in such nonsensical mindfuck fashion that it just boggled the minds of anime fans worldwide. The fans didn’t have a clue what the creators must have been thinking.
Repeat that last line to yourself again. The fans didn’t have a clue what the creators must have been thinking.
My fellow anime fans. This year we have had the priviledge to witness one of the most infamous episodes of anime history, probably over the entire decade. That glorious creation that is the internet meant we could all see what people thought of these episodes. Forums full of frustrated fans. Bored bloggers, trying to come up with something original to say about each episode as the madness continued through to an entire 8 episodes. Reviews poured in calling this the single worst piece of crap ever created. Videos and photos were posted online full of people expressing their discontent, or sometimes it was just people joining in the fun.
However this wasn’t the most remarkable part of this episode of anime history. What was far more remarkable was the amount of people who rushed out to defend Endless Eight. It was an ingenious move, the animation was extreme quality (*cough* K-ON style *cough*) and anyone who said otherwise wasn’t a true Haruhi fan. Yes, people started to religiously follow Haruhi the same way one would follow a football team. They would continue to follow and purchase Haruhi merchandise no matter what. Kyo Ani trolled us all, but the worst part was that they were completely right. Just look at the DVD sales for Endless Eight. They have proven to the world that the fans will eat up their products no matter what crap they serve them. Even if they serve them the same shit over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
I watched about 4 episodes of Endless Eight. They were as dull as fuck. But do I wish Kyo Ani had done it differently? Maybe if I was a huge fan of the first series I would but that’s the point. I only kinda liked Haruhi. So which did I get more entertainment from, the first or second season? The second by miles. I have never seen the online anime world in such a state, it was truly the most entertaining online experience I’ve ever had. So what’s the moment in anime? I think I’ll leave that to the absolute highlight of all this uproar, when the nonsense of Endless Eight got so much that even certain fascist dictators started to lose their cool.
