12 Days of Anime #9 – Humanity’s Anger

Shingeki no Kyojin - 08 - Large 17

It’s nice to see the latest absolutely stupidly popular anime be something that is actually good. Considering the breakout hit before that was Sword Art Online, having Titan roar far beyond just anime fans into general public consciousness is encouraging. There are some rather silly things to Titan though, which got some people who were fans of its gritty darkness to balk. This first came when titans started punching other titans and what follows from there is where it changes tone just a little. I loved this part of the show though, because it’s both crazy ridiculous and yet fits perfectly in with the story it’s trying to tell.

There’s that brilliant moment around about episode 6 where Mikasa has just about given up on life. She’s been the strongest character in the show but even she’d been reduced to the same panicking hopeless folks inside the walls. Just as she’s facing down a titan about to chow down on her, another massively pissed looking titan charges in and decks the other in the face so hard that its own arm falls off. Mikasa staring in shock and wonder at this monstrosity angrily stomping on the other Titan’s face so ferociously until the whole thing is 6 feet below ground level, the realisation was dawning across her face: We can fight back!

I’d already sorta guessed that the new enraged titan was, if not Eren, then certainly a representation of Eren. In one single form he personified Eren’s rage against the titans and the rage they might need if they were ever going to turn the tide. It may have been a little silly to have Eren suddenly start sprouting giant ribcages by biting his thumb, but in the context of the story Titan was telling it totally makes sense. Plus it’s fucking awesome. The humans are fighting back. And they are really mad.

Raging Eren is the best Eren. The last episode fulfilled my desire to see him kick butt in his full fury. I usually expect characters to control their emotions to concentrate their power but in this, he drew his strength right from his raw willpower/anger. Great stuff!

P.S. Team Four Star made an abridged episode from the first 5 episodes and it’s good. I usually don’t watch abridged series but this was really funny. Here it is if anyone is curious.

I saw that Abridged version with my girlfriend. She hadn’t seen Titan yet and it was a surprisingly good abridged version of the story. Was surprised by how good it was.

Raging Eren is awesome and he’s really easy for us to emotionally connect with. My number one man in AoT is Captain Levi, who is just really just a badass with a heart of gold. Check out my post on Levi here: http://animemonographia.wordpress.com/2013/12/21/o-captain-my-captain-channeling-walt-whitman-in-attack-on-titan/
