12 Days of Anime #8: Boom Boom Satellites

One of my favourite anime openings of all time is the first Xam’d opening. Yeah that show eventually crapped out in the second half like an alarming number of Bones anime, but I still love that OP. I kept waiting for Boom Boom Satellites, the band who performed the OP, to be picked for another anime song. All we got was a random ED halfway through Gundam Unicorn and a very short OP for Ninja Slayer of all things. Then the main vocalist got cancer and quit from singing and that was it.

Except no. Turns out the bloke was able to battle back the cancer briefly to release a few more songs. Up pops the OP for Kiznaiver with its dance number and kaleidoscope visuals. All right maybe it sounded a lot like Take On Me but who cares, that’s a good song too and I feel Boom Boom Satellites only improved on it. Refined a classic ya know. Shame Kiznaiver turned out kinda crap too. Oh well, maybe one of these days Boom Boom Satellites will get to do the OP for a good anime.

Except they won’t. Because shortly after cancer won the battle and the lead vocalist died. Considering how little I really listen to music nor care that much about music, doubly so for Japanese music, it shocked me just how much his death got to me. Something about how excited I was too see him back for one go, then croak straight after. It got to me man.

That feel when the video is not available in your country…

Sad to hear about the death. I remember feeling a similar way when I had first heard of Nujabes’ tragic accident.

I have to thank Death Note, because without it I still wouldn’t know anything about Maximum The Hormone. It’s still my favourite japanese band and one of my all time favourite bands.

Now when is Babymetal going to make anime OP or ED?

Apparently, Boom Boom Satellite also did songs for the movies Appleseed and Vexille.
Their OP for Xam’d was the best.

    RIP Kawashima san.

I’d honestly forgotten they were planning on making more FMP. I’ll believe it when I see a trailer

Broken Mirror was pretty great by them as well. It was featured in Gundam Unicorn. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmUkANO4ekk
