12 Days of Anime #6: Fly Away Now

After largely exhausting the great anime of the 00’s, this year I finally started watching pre-Evangelion anime. Before this year, the only pre-Eva anime I’d seen was some Ghibli movies and Akira, the oldfags having pissed me off to the point that I wasn’t watching older anime simply to spite them. I’m not sure what happened in the past year or so, but oldfags don’t seem quite so prevalent. Maybe it was the appearance of younger generation below me made the oldfag ceiling seem less far away. Maybe oldfags started to retire to odd corners of the internet, only venturing out for the beautiful yet incomprehensible Gundam Unicorn. Maybe it was a growing distaste for moe fans that it was simply a case of changed priorities. Either way, 2010 was the year Scamp made some headway into the massive heap of anime pre turn of the century. But this post doesn’t start there. It starts with Panty and Stocking.

Panty and Stocking was the enigma of the autumn season. Nobody really knew quite what to expect from Gainax’s Powerpuff Girls lookalike. The first half of the first episode gave us a pile of shite with one moment of pure glory. In fact, you could describe the entire series as shite with the occasional sparkle of absolute brilliance. This moment of brilliance, as you probably guessed from the title, is the magical girl, pole dance, strip tease scene. Change in animation style, parody of the deliberately sexual magical girl transformation sequences, awesome and now iconic background music, the scene made the hairs on the back of my head stand on end (and other body parts stand to attention too). Anime needs more in-show dancing anyway, why not go the full monty with a strip tease scene too?

But no, this is not my moment in anime, despite the misleading title. The moment came a week later when that same scene was repeated in an anime 18 years older than it. Barely a week after Panty and Stocking, I decided to watch the Masume Shirow OVA Dominion Tank Police. In the first episode, the Puma catgirl sisters perform a totally irrelevant to the plot but still totally awesome strip tease scene, this time with less auto-tune dance music and more Frankie Goes to Hollywood style smooth music. Comparing the two, Panty and Stocking is clearly the better strip tease, but it does have 18 years of animation advances to pull off said strip tease with.

It was a brilliant moment of past-meets-present. In the space of a week, I had seen probably the only two proper strip-tease dances in anime history (please do tell me in the comments if there have ever been any others). So yes, in case you were wondering. My moment in anime #6 is anime strip teases. Anime sure is deep stuff.

I LOVE Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt.
Along with Otome Youkai Zakuro it’s the only show that didn’t disappoint me. Wait, there’s Kuragehime too.

Haha, and I just finished episode 12 of P&S. You might remember the posts I’ve made about my interest in anime disappearing over the past two years. But I think P&S has revived it. It’s nowhere near a masterpiece, but it’s the most entertaining thing I’ve watched in ages, I’m getting the same thrills I had from watching Samurai Champloo, Higurashi and Gankutsuou. And now the search for something just as entertaining begins again.

The Dominion Tank Police strip tease was pretty awesome too. On my PTW it goes.

That’s amusing. Obviously Tank Police’s striptease wasn’t satirizing anything (I don’t think magical girl was even an established genre yet), but catching the interesting similarities between shows you wouldn’t think otherwise is one of the highlights of going into the time machine. The more things change, etc. etc.
