12 Days of Anime #6: Execution Device Primate

vlcsnap-2013-11-21-23h38m16s102And nothing was the same ever again.

As much as pulling the Guillotine Gorilla card appears to have basically ruined Samurai Flamenco, for that single glorious moment when the policeman’s head got chopped off, it was pure and utter madness. I have never, ever seen a shift that drastic and that completely out of the blue in my life. There was NOTHING hinting that this would happen. Watching twitter completely explode with a series of people just typing out whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat was baffling before the event because it was hard to sum up in a tweet what happened. Saying Guillotine Gorilla didn’t give it away. Saying Samurai Flamenco started channelling Blood-C gave a little indication, but certainly not the nature of it.

What continues to be crazy about this moment since it happened is how the entire show continues to treat that moment like it was just natural proceedings. On some level that could be construed as the point, but someone’s lines have clearly been crossed. For as drastic a twist as it was, it wasn’t presented in the same vein as a Madoka episode 3 or a Code Geass episode 22 where the scene itself had a certain amount of gravitas to the directing like it knew this was Big Shit. People seemed a bit freaked out by Guillotine Gorilla but not as much as you’d think a policeman’s head shooting out a window would do. It’s so shocking that even now I’m still waiting for them to pull the curtain back.

As much as it might have ruined the anime though, I will always have that moment. I will always have that singular moment a man morphed into a gorilla with a guillotine in its chest. For that moment, I had to give this moment a space in this 12 days. It would have felt wrong to ignore it.

At this point I’m starting to think someone is screwing with reality to make a world of Toku. Especially now that they’ve brought in Sentai.

” Either that or you’ve got to get even more ridiculous and become a completely different show altogether all over again. The monsters are from space and they try invade the earth so they build a Samurai Flamenco mecha and it eventually turns into Gurren Lagann. Now that I could possibly accept.”

It looks like you were spot on, minus the Gurren Lagann part (though it might actually go there at this rate.) It just got even crazier. I’m not sure if it’s gotten so ridiculously off the wall that it’s good again or that this is the final nail in the coffin for Mecno. I keep saying I’m going to drop SamFlam but darn, do those insane changes keep me curious.

The writer must have picked and eaten something bad off the street. I personally hate this change very much, myself. I villain who is also a tokusatsu fan is fine, but how the hell did he obtain all those abilities and technology? Sigh… The anime has dropped from what I would rate as ‘exceptional’ into something ordinary / just a way to pass some time.

They mentions the cells were alien in 9 and 10. The new Sentai alien villains are the ones who helped him.

And this is an acceptable explanation how…?

It was actually thanks to this episode and the reaction that it gave that got me back into SF.

But the latest episode convinced me that the story is not real and someone will shout ‘cut’ at the end. There’s no way you can write something that could basically be mistaken for a parody and expect to be taken seriously.

Although even if it was a parody, it doesn’t change the fact that SF has gone crap.
