12 Days of Anime #4: NOT a bunch of boys being insufferably nice to each other

danshiko0902

One of my blogging traditions is on the 26th December, once all my 12 days posts are done, I write a list of moments that caused me to rage. This year I’m struggling to come up with a half decent list. It’s not like there hasn’t been a lack of great examples of terrible writing this year. The difference this year is they didn’t make me angry or rage or anything like that. At most, I scoffed at them, which is hardly a strong reaction. I feel like I’ve been a lot less angry this year when it comes to anime in general. I’m going to put this down to Daily Lives of Highschool Boys existing.

When writing my season preview for last winter, I balked at Daily Dudes. We just had a second season of Kimi to Boku announced, a travesty of a show because it’s basically the exact same crap about a bunch of boring sods doing absolutely fuck all that anime had been shitting out over the past few years. Worse though, it showed signs that this genre was starting to creep into other areas of anime. If they were now making anime about a bunch of guys being insufferably nice to each other, what next? I could have written it off as a once off, and indeed I did, until I saw Daily Lives of Highschool Boys appear over the horizon.

So I snapped. “Seriously? This is a thing now? Cute boys doing cute things?” – “You’re all a bunch of fucking shallow morons” – “you bunch of fucking halfwit shitfaces”. So on and so forth. Guilty Crown was in the middle of airing. Black Rock Shooter was on the horizon. I was Mad about Japanese Cartoons. This is not want I wanted to see.

But we all know how this ends. Nichibros was not that. In fact, it was a direct satire of the very thing I thought it was going to be. It pointed and laughed at the likes of K-ON, Lucky Star and Hidamari Sketch. Plus for good measure, as if I wasn’t already collapsing on my floor in spasms of ecstasy, they then proceeded to mock the self-important pretentious romances that shoujo romances with their Literature Girl segments.

I needed Daily Lives of Highschool Boys. I needed some recognition from anime itself that it too knew how bad that material was and that it would continue making the anime I like. Even when stuff like Accel World or Acchi Kocchi came along, I no longer got (too) mad. Daily Lives of Highschool Boys exists. God’s in his heaven, all’s right with the world.

Obligatory comment that Accel World was actually good and not at all like SAO.

Other obligatory comment that KtB was also equally awesome, but in its own gentle, melancholic way.

Wonderment towards scamp’s reception of another subversive deconstruction: milky holmes.

Obbligatory approving comment on Kimi to Boku. First time I actually cared about romance on anime.
That being said, it comes from someone who likes this kind of shows…

Acchi Kocchi wasn’t bad, it was just… there. Like any of these adaptation that isn’t Hidamari Sketch (And Hidamari only stands because of its occasional Shaftiness.)

That being said, Nichibros’ girl’s segment had actually more interresting characters than any others girl’s anime.

And SZS already existed to deconstruct harem and school life. But it stopped when Hidamari Sketch continued…

I would go on a big auld rant why Kimi to Boku is a travesty of depression and terribleness, but considering this post was supposed to be about how I’m no longer angry, I won’t.

Plus, you guys probably already know what my reasons are

It’s too bad that the specials kind of sucked. I think I only laughed at two of them. Three max. You get to finishing them yet?

On another note, since I’ve sat through a lot more bad anime than you have this year (*cough* Sword Art Online *cough*), I’ve got enough entries for my own “worst moments” list. I wouldn’t say all of them made me RAGE, but they did piss me off.

I really liked the one about being a hero to save girls by undoing their zips. That was more than enough to make up for the others being meh

For me the Literature Girl segments carried the most weight in Hysterical Laugh Factor for the whole series. It’s just… the reactions is the best part of it. Still funny to this day.

Looking forward to your not-so-ragey list then.

The Lit Girl segments are indeed the best. I was considering choosing that as my 12 days moment, but decided to instead focus on my general feeling of relief that this series existed, because that includes Lit Girl

That first Literature Girl sketch was one of the funniest moments of the year. I was off my face laughing, and I have rewatched it at least 5 times since. It’s just a beautiful show at times, and I loved it.

I saw someone defended Accel World. Yeh right, it was woefully shit. It actually made me angry at how bad it was, if I did a list of the top 10 things in anime that caused me to rage like Scamp is doing, Accel World would occupy at least 5 of those slots.

Good Guy Hidenori playing along with a girl’s fantasy. Scumbag Yoshitake being creative. Dumb Guy Tadakuni saying things not fitting the mood. Hilarity and lung-busting laughter ensues.

The existence of Nichibros alone is what make don’t lose hope on Anime because something like “SAO” being thrown all over literary everywhere.

Is it worth it to watch just so that all the other wonderful anime looks god-like and the best thing since sliced bread in contrast?

Thanks an interesthing to put it….yeah! Having taste crap or trash right up in your mouth would make the simplest of bread taste like heaven’s food. To know the good we also need to know the bad.

As someone who has spent an awful lot of time watching the truly lowest quality anime has to offer, I’ll say it doesn’t necessarily improve your opinion of the best, but it does make you appreciate what the average manage to achieve

Well, that’s must be hard for you to went through all of that though it is great to see you still manage your awesome taste.
Also, who’s that fabulous guy in your avatar? Just a cat’s curiosity.

My friend, if you’re on this blog and don’t know what Code Geass is, you are in desperate need of some hard education.

Just gotta into anime seriously in 2011 :(
Don’t worry, as we talking I’m already searching for Cowboy Bepop, Samuraim Champloo, Mushishi, and Code Geass.

I have to give some huge praise to this series. I very rarely laugh when I watch anime, even if it’s funny I usually only smile. This series got me to laugh. There were jokes that were predictable (only few) and jokes that just weren’t funny. I hate RPG jokes. But the good stuff is just so good and refreshing. We definitely need second season.
Also every comedy anime has to YELL THEIR JOKES. It’s really annoying. Why does this happen in every anime?
I will probably never forget the bike scene or Literature Girl segments.
Also Hidenori basically acting like Kyon was awesome.
Still I personally think Nichijou is even funnier. That series also made me laugh a lot. I still watch Nichijou clips from Youtube pretty much every week.
Maybe I’m just too huge Kyoani fanboy. Then again Hyouka sucked. God damn it sucked. More stuff happens in Hidamari Sketch. HIDAMARI SKETCH!
This has been really mediocre anime year. I don’t want to give “Anime of The Year” award to any series.

The Distance sketch was the best sketch by far. The amount of aloe needed for that burn was too damn high.

I’m glad I wasn’t following you when you made that Winter 2012 preview because lord I would have had some words.

That being said, I really really really wanted to find Nichibros funny enough to put on my top list (since Takamatsu Shinji’s works already occupy two of the slots I figured I could go for the hat trick) but I dunno I just couldn’t find it as funny. I don’t know if I was colored by Gintama being my favorite show ever and the style (not to mention the voice acting) being so damn similar but not actually Gintama. Like the whole uncanny valley thing. I really want to watch this again someday to see if it has a different impact on me.

That also being said, literature girl was hilarious.

Those lit girl segments nearly made my year. and cemented my non-homoerotic love for Sugita. That and the gundam references which I choose to believe is the fault of sugita being there.
