I liked Gundam AGE quite a bit overall, but that final arc was pretty shit. No doubt about it. The series struggled to start but hit its stride by the end of Flit’s arc, and then followed with Asemu’s arc, which was pretty damn good the whole way through. Then came Kio’s arc. I don’t want to dwell too much on the negative points of a series I enjoyed so much for so long, but it was quite deflating to see AGE sputter toward such a dumb, irritating conclusion.
But at least something decent happened before the end: Zeheart and Asemu had the opportunity to settle their generation-spanning rivalry. Even though Kio infected Asemu’s mind with his nonsense, Asemu knew he was the only one charged with defeating
his lover Zeheart. Perhaps it does not unfold perfectly (this is Kio’s arc, after all, and it is required to take a fat shit on everything), but at least there was enough good sense remaining in the series to realize that this was how it had to end for two of the best characters in the series.
I rooted for Asemu much of the series because he overcame a lot of limitations to become an awesome pilot: No Newtype hax, a father who’s kind of a racist douchebag, and a truly awful haircut. Asemu took advantage of having a kickass mentor and became a cool pilot and later a Gundam piloting pirate. How could you not root for him? But I did feel sorry for Zeheart since he tossed away what would probably have been a pretty happy life with Asemu and his friends to fight for his people and his ideals. Those folks got a pretty raw deal even though Jun Maeda wrote their backstory.
The futility of it all finally catches up to Zeheart at the end. At least he gets a good heart-to-heart with Asemu before he goes out. Asemu x Zeheart forever~~~~~ <3 <3 <3
